Pregnant Worker’s Lunch Keeps Getting Stolen, Manager Ends Up Hospitalized In Revenge
Office employees would know the infuriating feeling of seeing their lunch stolen from the fridge. It can be more frustrating if it’s a repeat offense where you don’t know who the perpetrator is.
Because HR complaints won’t always suffice, some people take matters into their own hands. Sometimes, it may work in their favor, but for this pregnant employee, it backfired.
She received a warning from her bosses after her lunch “decoy” sent someone to the hospital, all while her food theft problem remained unaddressed. Read the entire story below.

It was a worse experience for this pregnant woman, who dealt with a repeat offender

“Everyone has a rule they feel they can violate”

We’ve all violated a rule in some way, whether by running a red light or pocketing a piece of candy from the store. It’s just that some people believe they can get away with such behavior without facing consequences.
“Everybody’s got something they do that they can justify and feel is okay,” University of Texas at Austin psychology professor Dr. Art Markman told The Cut. “There’s always some rule that you personally feel you can violate.”
As Dr. Markman explains, it all comes down to a fundamental attribution error. This cognitive bias leads people to make overblown judgments about other people’s actions while underplaying their own errors.
“Most people want to generally go around seeing themselves as being honest, good folks,” he states, adding that when it comes to office lunches, most people resort to whatever is convenient. In the author’s case, her food may have been the most appealing to steal.
However, this doesn’t change the fact that it is thievery, which is never ethical. In such cases, the onus is on human resources to enforce rules and educate employees about possible sanctions.
“Make it clear that any theft is a violation of your company’s policy and that disciplinary action will be taken when employees are caught,” HR Knowledge Advisor Victoria Neal wrote in an article for SHRM.
Neal emphasizes that these disciplinary actions also apply to “would-be vigilantes” who engage in food pranks as the author did. Instead, she encourages reporting these incidents to a supervisor or through an anonymous channel.
Based on her account, the author didn’t seem like she tried to go through the proper steps by escalating the matter to the people in authority first, perhaps out of sheer frustration. However, her actions would easily have had fatal consequences.
If reporting to HR wasn’t an option for her, hiding her food would have been a better, more harmless way to prevent theft.
Many commenters didn’t see anything wrong with her actions
But there were a few who saw the gravity of the consequences

F off YTAs "murder" ??? how were they supposed to know the thief has allergies?
This!!! Some people have limited abilities with logic.
Load More Replies..."tampering with food" and "attempted murder" because of spices? Oof. :D
What do you expect in a country that lets burglars sue the burgled people because they hurt themselves burgling.
"Make it a medical issue, eating while pregnant." Now that's a brilliant suggestion, it turns the case into the mangler ... I mean "manager" being accused of causing harm.
"Attempted murder" roflcopter. Manager brought this on herself. HR should have been giving manager warning for stealing and particularly stealing a pregnant person's food deliberately.
Turn it around. Because the manager stole a pregnant woman's food, she's now going to sue her employer for intentionally attempting to harm her developing fetus. The judge will LOVE that case.
N to the pathetic YTA TROLLS how is it attempted murder 😂dear god Ali e those idiots worry me totally
Note this was a "family business". Who thinks the thief of manager has connections to the family?
Am I the only one who thinks that OP needs to find another job? I mean, it's a family owned company. Of course they'll side with each other. And no, NTA
NEVER admit to what you did or tell some story! You say I made my lunch for me and someone stole it. Then report the manager to HR and start the petty revenge.
This sounds like a possible lawsuit, directed at your employer. They are not protecting employees and their property while on company time. If they won't say anything to the thief because she's a manager, it could be argued as collusion. An employee, especially a pregnant employee, needs nutrition for herself and her unborn child to be a healthy and functional person, future mother and employee. Her workplace is culpable in preventing that from happening.
So amazed at the amount of times I hear this story. Like, why do adults act like children that haven't been taught that stealing is wrong? Also, how does OPs workplace not know that cayenne pepper could be a pregnancy craving? I craved hot stuff while pregnant, more so than I normally would. If there is no HR department, there may be the option to go to a labor board or get an employment attorney involved, but only in cases where guilt wasn't admitted to. Stealing is a crime. Or maybe small claims court? I dunno what would work in this scenario. Anyway, such a stupid move to steal others' food when you have food allergies, and no one should have to lock up their lunches. Workplaces should be disciplining and firing thieves. OP should look for a better job.
This is a family business. There is no HR. There is nowhere to file a complaint. Only thing to do is keep your lunch at your desk and a cooler lunch bag. In over 20 years of doing this, my lunch being out of a the fridge for half a day has never resulted in something going bad, not even yogurt (though I will say warm yogurt is gross). Having my lunch stolen twice was enough for me. Also - eating the exact same thing every single day helps. Everyone knows my lunch. Me and my lunch are an office joke. That's fine. No one steals my lunch.
"Maliciously tamper" with your own property. Asinine. Also, the company obviously knew and admitted to it that what happened to OP was wrong or she would've gotten more than a verbal. Manager FAFO.
She needs to go to management, and request compensation for her stolen lunches. It might also be worth pointing out to them that if the manager is stooping so low as to steal a pregnant woman’s lunches, what, and how much of it, is she stealing from the company directly? Has the amount of paper being used in the firm going up? Or biros? Or staplers? Or anything that is increasing in replacement numbers, she is probably stealing!
I wouldn’t do anything to endanger the health of someone. Give them nausea or diarrhea? Yeah, I might.
I think all of the folks getting their lunches stolen just need a padlock on the zippers of their lunch bags / boxes!
Well the moral of the story is if it ain’t yours DINT F*****G TOUCH IT , n that means food as well her problem n your NTA but I wouldn’t have said oh yes I put that in it deliberately lol noooooo a yes it was mine she STOLE YET AGAIN , how is it my fault im pregnant n I crave cayenne pepper at min lol no. Y freaking fault you have a thief on your staff now is it ! N while your on maternity leave do some job hunting lol blessed be
