Ben Smith, Automatic weapons are illegal in Canada and handguns are super hard to get and shoot. Yet gangs and criminals still get them illegally. Most shootings happen with handguns, too.

In most states, secondary sales of guns don't even require an ID, let alone a background check. I agree with Lynn here. None of you are offering your condolences. Someone who thinks the "government is coming to get them" doesn't sound like a mentally stable person who should be owning as many guns as they want. This "man" owned the guns he killed these innocent people with legally. It's easy to get a gun, and you're an idiot if you try to debate that point. Amendments are made to be just that... Amendable. Nobody has ever died from the fourth amendment or the first. The ONLY thing killing citizens every single day are guns. Lynn, I'm not being paranoid. Dictatorship and tyranny starts with disarming the population. And I don't think 'the government is coming to get me', but by taking away your right to bear arms, what is stopping them? If they take away the second amendment, what is stopping them from taking away the first amendment (right to free speech), the fourth amendment (right against unreasonable searches and seizures), or any of your rights and amendments? And look at Chicago, where it is extremely hard to get any kind of gun LEGALLY, but is one of the most dangerous cities in America.

Lynn, If you make guns illegal and force legal and responsible gun owners to give up their firearms, you are putting those families at risk. MOST CRIMINALS DON'T GET THEIR GUNS LEGALLY. And the ones that do, they will just get them illegally too. And I can't believe you have the audacity to accuse gun owners of not caring about children dying. People own these guns to protect their children. And again, ANYONE CANNOT GET ANY GUN AT ANYTIME! These 'gunshow loopholes' and 'no background checks' are absolutely made up! Anyone at anytime can get a gun? Obviously you arent talking about America because that isnt true. And people don't care about guns more than a childs life, its the opposite! People own guns to protect their family and children!

Beaver, I have a question for you... If the government did decide on a "takeover." In what world is someone's handgun going to stand up against tanks, bombs, and all the power of the military? I'm actually not anti-gun, and don't like the idea of taking guns away from people who will never abuse them. But at this point, SOMETHING needs to happen. We can't watch children die every week and say "oh well!"

Dave, obviously a handgun will not protect yourself from the military, which is what i was saying about automatic weapons. That is the reason legal gun owners want them. The reason they want handguns is for self protection in a home or public setting.

This is going to sound extreme, but answer honestly. If you make firearms illegal among the public, what is stopping a government takeover? And if you say, 'i didn't mean firearms, just automatic weapons,' then that makes no sense. Handguns have killed way more people domestically than automatic weapons.
