I am sure you are all familiar with the type of bread instantaneously associated with France - the iconic baguette. But there is more to this baker’s marvel than just a distinctive elongated shape. It is practically an art form that the French take very seriously. They love their baguettes and bread in general, so it comes as no surprise that this flour treasure has become a part of the meme culture.
Today, we invite you to delve into a collection of these baguette memes shared by an Instagram account called baguettes.in.unusual.places. This tasty assortment of images ranges from appetizing to funny to totally absurd.
While going through these memes, we can’t help but marvel at the creativity of the human mind and how something as basic as a piece of bread (sorry… a baguette) can spark such amusing and imaginative scenarios.

It's the UTA (Utah Transit Authority). As a Utahn, let's just say not a whole lot of smarts going on in that organization. Government run, so, yeah, nuff said.

"They said I could be anything I wanted, so I became Sandwich Filling!"
Bored Panda reached out to French travel and culture blogger Phoebe Thomas, who runs Lou Messugo Blog, to learn more about why the French are so obsessed with baguettes.
Baguettes are a quintessential part of French culture and cuisine, so we asked Phoebe to share what makes them special to her personally. She shared: “I guess I first encountered baguettes as a kid on a French exchange from school. I was impressed that French kids got to eat a few pieces of chocolate stuffed inside some baguette for goûter (afternoon tea/snack around 4 pm) every day. Baguettes are made of such simple ingredients but pack in so much texture and flavor.”
Phoebe Thomas, on her blog, shared that she has two passports, British and Australian, but has no particular hometown. Now Phoebe lives in the south of France, where she runs a vacation rental called Lou Messugo. As someone who has experienced quite a lot of that part of France, we wanted to know whether she has come across any unique or funny anecdotes related to baguettes there or if that is just an internet thing.
Phoebe Thomas wrote: “Not sure I can think of any funny anecdotes, but I do love it that many French people take their baguette so seriously they will get a fresh one twice a day, one for lunch and one for dinner. Any leftovers get eaten the next day for breakfast, toasted. In some parts of France, especially in rural areas, baguettes are delivered daily, though this is becoming rarer as many villages now have a baguette vending machine that is filled by a local baker.”
Very very common in France. That way we can always have a "fresh" baguette when we need one ! Very convenient if the bakery is closed or far away !
En ville, peut-être, mais à la campagne ce genre de chose est une hérésie. Bon après j'avoue avoir vu la même chose avec des pizzas.

Baguette-related humor often plays on stereotypes about French culture. We were curious to learn how Phoebe views these jokes, whether they promote cultural understanding or create misconceptions.
“In general, I don’t think baguette jokes do much harm. They are usually very clichéd, but cliché is usually based on truth. It really is true that many retired French will cycle with a baguette strapped on the back of their bike or under their arm. I wouldn’t go as far as saying they promote cultural understanding or misconceptions but they do hint at how important daily bread is to an average French person, which in itself can help understand cultural importance.”
A baguette is commonly known around the world as that classic French style of bread and is in fact named such because of the meaning of baguette, which translates to “stick.” Therefore, baguette magique is “magic stick,” or wand. As an English speaker, it is rather amusing to imagine the denizens of the wizarding world waving around their loaves of bread, but it is simply a good translation that makes perfect sense in the French language.
And lastly, we asked Phoebe Thomas if she has ever incorporated baguette-related experiences or themes for her guests. She wrote: “No, I don’t incorporate any baguette-related activities, but I certainly tell my guests where to find the best bread locally!”
From this interview, we got to understand that baguettes and bread are an important part of French culture, and some of these memes actually show us the daily reality of a regular French person.
I don't know where they are going, but we need to follow that vehicle!
Of course. Bread, middle, bread. How is it not a sandwich?
The counter-argument is that the purpose of a sandwich is to allow someone to eat the bread at the same time as the middle. This orientation defeats that purpose, and so it's a mere representation of a sandwich, in the way a toy gun is not actually a gun.

Actually, if that burger set forth what was "canonically" a burger, it would be an argument for "no." That burger deliberately adds extra buns so that the person eating it can fully experience "sandwich" throughout. This is consistent with my proposal that the defining purpose of a sandwich is to allow a person to eat bread and not-bread simultaneously. I would however even suggest that even THAT burger is not a sandwich, because I would argue a sandwich should be self-supporting: that burger appears to rely on a stake to keep it together and upright.

I hope planting, baguettes seem more treeish than asparagus-y. Also I kinda really want to see a baguette tree.
