Male Colleagues Tell A Female Heart Surgeon That The “Gender Pay Gap” Is Not Real, She Exposes The Reality

The wage gap between men and women is very real, even in our oh-so-modern Western society. However, not everyone believes it is. And some think that it doesn’t exist in prestigious areas like medicine. Well, Dr. Nikki Stamp, a heart and lung transplant surgeon from Australia, put them right in a viral Twitter thread. She did what all good scientists do: she followed the evidence. Have a read through her arguments below and let us know what you think.

According to Dr. Stamp, the wage gap is deeply enrooted in the entire job industry: it’s even prevalent in very prestigious parts of the job market. And if inequality exists there, well, imagine how visible it is in other areas, too. Dr. Stamp told Bored Panda that most examinations of the gender pay gap have shown that “it is mainly men who don’t believe in the existence of the gender pay gap, or attribute it to simply to women who have children.”

Meanwhile, Eddy Ng, the James and Elizabeth Freeman Professor of Management at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, went into detail with Bored Panda about how women are underrepresented at senior levels in jobs. “They don’t fit the prototype of what leaders look like. They often lacked the preparation, not in terms of qualifications, but the socialization necessary to ascend to elite levels. Some of these are political skills, some are sponsorships, and some are social capital acquired at the golf courses and locker rooms, and few women partake in these socialization activities.”

Dr. Stamp explained that the exact reasons as to why some professionals ignore the gender pay gap aren’t clear but could be due to a lack of transparency or them not having experienced it themselves. “The reason that this is problematic is that it isn’t economic or legal actions that will resolve the gender pay gap but cultural changes. If people don’t even believe something exists, how can we change it?”

We also wanted to get Dr. Stamp’s take on what could be done to equalize the disproportionate distribution of chores at home. “This could be a chicken and egg situation—it’s thought that reducing the gender pay gap increases women’s workforce participation and reduces the amount of housework they do, increasing the amount their spouses do. But of course, women have also been shown to do more chores at home than their husbands even when they earn more money. However, these are big cultural changes requiring us to upend long-standing social structures. Recognizing that we experience the world differently depending on our gender would be a good start.”

According to professor Ng, “Women make less than men because they are concentrated in lower-paying professions or lower-paying industries, even for female executives and CEOs. Think CEO for a cosmetics company vs. CEO for a manufacturing company.”

He continued: “Taste discrimination—paying women less than men for doing the same job—is another factor. Women rely on other women for sources of (compensation) information and mentorship. This in turn has the unintended effect of receiving inaccurate/discounted information from women mentors who are being paid less themselves, and then forming lower expectations. Inaccurate information, lower expectations, and negotiation styles lead women to negotiate lower salaries at the start of their careers, and this gets magnified as women progress through their careers. Career interruptions (to start a family) also exacerbate the pay gap. and men rarely interrupt their careers to start a family.”

Professor Ng also pointed out that racialized women are greatly affected by the disruptions that the pandemic had on the job market because they are “often employed in low skill jobs and in industries that are primed to be automated. Think meatpacking, grocery shopping, and other service-based jobs. Here’s an example. The pandemic accelerated the automation because of health and safety needs. It also temporarily or permanently eliminated many service and hospitality jobs because of lockdowns.”

Dr. Stamp explained that some of the ways that could help fix the income inequality in medicine could be to have better pay transparency, sponsor women, and promote employees equally.

She also said that generally abolishing gender bias in medicine is something that we should strive towards (though that’s unlikely to happen overnight even with the best of intentions). What’s more, better research and reporting of salaries in medical fields could help with transparency issues. In other words, if you know what your colleague is getting paid, you’ll start asking questions why you’re not for the same work that you do.

The Harvard Business Review suggested that the pandemic reversed a lot of the progress toward greater gender equality that had been achieved over the past few years. According to them, women’s jobs are a whopping 1.8 times more vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic than men’s are.

“Women make up 39% of global employment but account for 54% of overall job losses as of May 2020,” HBR writes.

What’s more, Forbes explains that women take on the vast majority of extra chores, childcare, and education for their families at home. In short, there’s a disproportionate division of labor at home between partners.

In an earlier interview, we spoke more with Professor Ng about how the pandemic has unequally affected women in the workforce and why.

Professor Ng explained that women are “overrepresented in lower-paying and precarious jobs.” Areas like retail, service, and hospitality have far less job security and benefits. “Men on the other hand are found in industries that are deemed essential, such as transportation (delivery) and construction,” he said.

The Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the massive restrictions on businesses and movement, forced many retail and hospitality businesses to scale down. Others went bankrupt. This meant that a large number of women were laid off from their jobs or displaced. According to Professor Ng, the situation is even worse for women of racialized backgrounds.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus lockdowns didn’t lead to greater gender equality that some people expected to see.

“Women, even those in professional and managerial jobs, continue to take on a second shift (caring for family) after the first shift at the office. We continue to subscribe to gender roles, even in many egalitarian societies,” he said, adding that this is one of the reasons for the “persistent pay gap and an underrepresentation of women in senior management and higher-paying jobs.”

He added that men’s higher-paying careers are prioritized over women’s (seen as “supplemental income”) during lockdowns. “Women reorganize their work around family demands, men often do not. Unequal division of labor is exacerbated when a family could no longer access paid help (COVID restrictions), and women will have to pick up the slack.”

There is one other career-related issue we need equality on: maternity leave. I think men should be entitled to take paternity leave for an equal duration of time. Sure his body doesn't need to recover from pregnancy like the mother's, but he's going to be losing sleep, taking care of an infant and supporting his wife too. It'd be easier for the whole family.

In Norway, you can split up most of the leave time as you wish (a bit is reserved for the mom only, and a smaller bit for the dad only). And up to a quite decent salary, you will receive 100% payment during that time! Oh, and did I mention they do not distinguish between male-female and same sex couples?

So did this convince any of her male colleagues? I hope so, but I'd guess not. It seems like a lot of people who deny the pay gap is real can't actually be convinced with any amount of evidence. I'd love to be proven wrong.

The problem is not a gender pay gap, the problem is that people have a hard time to accept other people as valuable contributors at the workplace but quite literally as human ressources. With this different view, it would just be normal for men to take parental leave, for women to face no career disadvantage for years off while being pregnant, and, more general, for people to have a life that stretched beyond their occupation. They payment would be but a little piece in such a utopia – I believe people would also be much happier.

I am actually the highest paid on my team of 5, and the other 4 members are men. I have always known my worth and put forth a quality product no one can argue is not worth my salary. I had to fake it (confidence) til I made it, but it's now something that can never be taken from me.

The article was thoroughly unconvincing and where's the claimed evidence? The gender wage gap has been properly critiqued and picked apart many times by economists, psychologists, business executives and other experts. The argument that women are discriminated against purely because of sex doesn't hold water. I notice that Dr. Nikki Stamp has conveniently oversimplified the criticism of the gender wage gap. Women having babies is only one factor, another one she didn't mention are the choices that women make that are different to men. Women tend to choose jobs that involve personal care such as nursing or jobs which have more social interaction such as customer support. Women tend to avoid jobs that involve lower social interaction and have higher physical demand. Women's job choices are more often geared toward less time in the office and more time with the family. These are tendencies that are consistent across all cultures across the globe so it's not just "social conditioning".

Wish this author would investigate the almost 20% of women who do not use their medical degree after graduation. Facing Dr shortages in the USA yet more women admitted to medical school by a large margin. Therefore we as a nation have fewer doctors. All medical schools and hospitals receive tax payer funding. Bottom line, more men should be admitted to medical school

It would be more convincing if she simply proved that her male heart surgeon colleagues earn more for the same work. Unfortunately, that is missing here.

Yeah no, I know women in law enforcement who have told me they make more than guys who have a more dangerous job than her. She has past experience and university. Shes unarmed and they are armed and shes still getting a higher wage. And retail where its one guy maybe and all females they get a tiny bit more or less than each other based on experience. and our grocery stores in canada are mostly union so you can be a cashier making a s**t load of money and its just every so many hours you get a pay bump. and in my job its based on the site whether you get a certain amount. the females I work with get the same as me and more if they are a supervisor

So 50% of the stated reasons come from babies, check. 30% are vague unsupported accusations of individual sexism that cannot be controlled for. 10% could be fixed if they were less caring regarding mental health and left that job to people who get paid to do that work 100% of the time, and the last 10% could be fixed by women demanding more in their own compensation packages. Companies will pay people less if they let them.

Don't they realise that in many places paying employees differently for the same job is illegal? If caught, you could sue for thousands or millions. The reason anti-bias and "progressive" training courses fail because the reason for the gender gap isn't sexism, but from fundamental differences between men and women, in regards to their careers.

I think a read that drs entire string of posts and I expected all this evidence for a gender pay gap, and didn't see any provided? She just keeps ranting that one does exist (supposedly due to sexism) ....There can be numerous reasons women in any profession earn less than men, that aren't sexist
