Experiencing The Colours Like Normal People For The First Time
I cry when I watch videos of people putting these glasses on for the first time. I had cataracts removed at age 31. I saw rain for the first time. And individual leaves on trees. And diamonds on the water on a sunny day. I totally get it. 20170827_1...1e8529.jpg
Melanie's experience actually underscores a differnce in types of experience to colour. In Melanie's her retina always had the capacity to perceive the full human range of colours but her cataracts (milky lenses) blocked the full range of colours (and likely the shapes too). In 'thehbbutts' case the retina can never perceive the actual, normally-understood experience of colours - what is happening is that the glasses filter wavelengths of light to make different colours appear to be more different to each other in the momentary experience. It's still a very clever technology and an amazing experience for the colour-blind person, but for a protanopic person for example they'll not see the 'real' experience of red in the way that someone with normal vison would..
Load More Replies...Your story rreminded me of when I got my first pair of glasses. I've been extremely nearsighted since childhood (like 20/200). But I didn't get my first pair of glasses until I was 10. When I put them on, I was totally amazed! The world looked completely different. The doctor told that was how "normal" people saw. I never knew. Just wanted to share with the community here.
I actually cried, both from joy and humility. Thank you SO much for sharing your experience of things we take for granted. <3
Never knew that there are special glasses for people who are color blind. Thanks
It's a company called Enchroma, they are pretty pricey, but worth it! I bought my husband's about 2 years ago and they were 350 USD. There are 3 different types, one for bright outdoors (the best for seeing colors), one for indoors, and if I remember correctly another one that's good for computers, people who repair electronics and need to see red/green lights/buttons. And FYI, if you put money into a flex spending account, it probably will cover the cost (ours did).
Load More Replies...Its a company called Enchroma. They have a wide range of styles including ones that fit over prescription glasses, or you can get prescription lenses in them.
Load More Replies...So a few questions and I am sure this will come off as not believing the experience that isn't the case. I thought that colorblindness was being unable to distinguish between certain colors. So an obnoxious red car would still be obnoxious but just in what that person sees red as shiny and brown or green? I mean not being able to see red doesn't mean It is invisible or grey. Is it that colorblindness also affects the persons ability to see the intensity of that color against a background they are not colorblind to, even if it looks like a different color? If this is the case then rainbows could be almost invisible because they are so faint, over half of it my be part of that blind spectrum? Anyway thanks for any input. I am going to do some googling. This has me interested.
I'm definitely not an expert but I think there are different types and severities of color blindness

I got my son and dad a pair at Christmas but they didn't work! I was so bummed! Glad yours worked!
There are different types of color blindness. Your son and dad may have the rarer type.
Load More Replies...This reminds me of the first time (back in the late 70s) that I saw my favorite TV show in color. It was amazing for me. I can't imagine how great real-life in color for the first time must be.
Holy moley, and I thought I was impressed when I had my first cataract surgery! The colours! The lights! Opened my fridge door and nearly blinded myself. Life can be magical.
This trips me out. It was stated that centuries ago, blue wasn't recognized as a color. Didn't have a name nor was seen, or written about. Could it be that people evolved their eyesight to actually see the color blue? And beforehand it was a type of color blindness?
a child with unhuman description skill, how awesome was that to read
These things are a hoax. Sorry. I am severely colorblind. Total waste of money.
You made me cry. I remember working for an attorney who was color blind. I read about colorblind glasses, then in the development stage. I bought a bunch of colored photographic lenses and tried to show him color. He got some and was amazed. I hope that attorney now has a pair of these glasses. As an artist, I can't even imagine living without color. So happy you are experiencing what most of us take for granted.
Reading the excitement in your words makes me wish that I too could see those colors. Disability keeps me locked up in bed now so those colors will only appear to me on a computer screen or the TV if I could afford the glasses. Congratulations on the return of your missing eyesight and best of luck in the future.
This brought tears to my eyes. As an artist, as a lover of Mother Nature and all the gifts she gives us to enjoy to actually see them as they are intended to be seen touched my heart! I'm so happy for this
I had no idea that color blind people don't see everyday miraculous wonders the same way I do. This is amazing.
This brought me to tears - so happy for this person and all others discovering colors
I remember looking at the great outdoors I Mean really looking. I had just given birth to my eldest child. at about 2 weeks old took her outside to see how she coped with the temp. It was November 30th my birthday i had her on the 15th. We went into our back yard and the world was filled with such beauty.. It was California so it was a perfect afternoon for a walk. She loved it. we enjoyed our time together so much that we took walks every nice day.
I’m glad you saw pure color, and great happiness in all this color! We often take it for granted, until a rainbow comes along and smacks us up side the head! Enjoy, burn the colors in to your brain, so when you dream from now on, you dream in color!❤️
That is the most, pure and gut wrenching emotion, that makes you almost see the colors with him! It really moved me and made me cry, I felt so happy for him!
i'm color-blind (76% red-green), always just took it as my circumstance. now you've got me curious.
We, the general public Normal Sighted People take so much for granted. We need to be reminded of what we have every so often.
Love this, my son is colorblind and his "super birthday" (turns 20 on august 20th) is coming up and I want to buy him these glasses. They aren't cheap...and I hate that he can't really wear them all the time; but this entry is confirmation that it's time to make the investment. Thank you.
It is incredibly wonderful that there are these glasses to allow people to see the glory of nature. I do love nature, but I am sure there are many who, in this crazy, busy, hectic world, take the beauty of nature for granted, that is sad !!!
I'm so glad that these actually work for some. Unfortunately, I just have problems with some shades of pink that for me are "not pink"... I can't tell you what color it is, just not pink. With everyone making such a fuss about pink being for this, blue is for that, and I'm here not even able to see what the big deal is on one particular color pink. The one color i actually get excited over when I can actually see it as pink. Got the glass, all excited and practically all the pink were now "not pink" except for Rose Quartz. As you may guess, I have always been able to see Rose Quartz as a vivid pink and I love it. Then again, it is the "Love Stone" so it would be kinda hard not to love. I am just happy that these glasses do actually work for others.
This is so sweet. It reminds me of the book The Giver where everyone is colorblind to create equality I guess but the main character starts seeing color and he's so amazed how beautiful everything is
this is such a miraculous story. it deeply touched me deeply & even made me cry & laugh outloud for not only your incredibly, wonderful & funny story but also it brought back memories. having been raised by my grandmother who had cataracts & grandfather who was colorblind. being a very curious child, i must have pestered my grandpa w/ many ?'s on how he saw colors. until one day he pulled open his sock drawer explaining what he saw blue was blue indeed, black was deep dark brown, even a pair of joke rainbow toe socks he saw as mostly as browns with blue & yellow! from then on i understood why he would sometimes wear a pink shirt with a yellow tie! by the way he was also a painter & his artworks were quite good too! he used to tell me he cheated because all the colors had the names printed clearly on each tube!
My daughter bought these for her dad for Christmas and he is amazed by what he is seeing
Now that my friends is so cool I have no words to express how that moved me so. Stop and see what really matters.... like looking up into the blue sky, a pretty rainbow.
My brother was so color blind that he had the worst possible case of it. He thought Gordon setters were the same color as irish setters when one is black, the other red. "It's t he same dog!" he exclaimed. Why oh why couldn't these glasses have come about while Billy was still alive?
everyone needs to feel those feelings, at least once a day. i wish i could feel them right now.
I have watched videos of people using these glasses for the first time and every one of them have the same reaction: they cry. I cry with them. The intense emotion of watching someone see color for the first time in their life is overwhelming. Technology can be miraculous.
That's exactly how I felt when I got glasses for the first time. How can people be unkind in a world of such magnificent beauty?
Wait til you see a great sunset. I still pull over when I'm driving so I can enjoy a "wow" sunset.
Technology is one of the wonderful things of life. I have a five year old grandson who was born blind. We have hopes for him one day.
The majority of us do take what ‘gifts’ we have lightly.....as one grows older, I think we realise and appreciate more. I’m so happy for YOU that you were able with these wonderful glasses to experience the daily things that sometimes go ignored by the majority. I love Red.....my car is White!
That bit about the red cars fascinates me. I always assumed that red on cars seemed a bit obnoxious to me *because* it's the most common colour of car for douches who speed and cut people off. But apparently that's actually inherent in the colour. Huh.
It's an attention-getting color for many animals, including primates like us. That's why berries use it. Plans need their seeds spread around to reproduce and spread. The color attracts animals to consume them. Then they poop out the indigestible seeds which then germinate on the ground (except humans; we mostly poop in toilets, so the seeds we swallow whole rarely turn into plants anymore).

Where did you get that pair of glasses? I would like to give them to a friend
I cried actual tears! This glasses are the miracle of the XXI century. So glad for those who can now see the things that we all take for granted.
it's a beautiful story, for us to remember to cherish all the "simple" things of every day life more
This reminds us how beautiful is our world, which we tend to forget. It makes us really humble. I have two brothers-in-law who are colorblind but unfortunately we can't find those glasses here, hope we'll be able to in some time
this ias beautiful. i am so happy for this astoundingly lucky person.
I want to be colorblind just so I can experience what he just experienced
Don't want to be a downer but...... These glasses are expensive, they don't work for everyone, and last time I checked there's only 5 or 6 places in the U.S. where you can actually try them on. Supposedly there's a money back guarantee but that's kinda iffy sometimes.
WTF did you get downvoted for making a sensible comment to temper expectations?? Have an upvote.
Load More Replies...It is lovely for colour blind people though. Having worked with blind people I do get where you are coming from but it would be awful to deny others this happiness just because there are others who never will.
