Think Norway, and the first thing that comes to mind are fjords, blonde people and Vikings - not fairy tale architecture.
Below, you’ll find photographs of architecture in the Norwegian countryside that looks like it’s been taken straight from a fairy tale. The architectural styles range from Stave churches, which were built during the Middle Ages, to ghostly natural waterfalls and traditional wooden houses constructed in the Norwegian vernacular style (byggeskikk) during the 19th century.
Let us know which of the pictures you think wouldn’t be out of place in a fairy tale, and as always, feel free to submit your own examples from your own travels in Norway.

Borgund Stave Church
Impressive! You can find something similar in Romania too .Take a look here ! http://www.discover-maramures.com/en/unesco-wooden-churches/
It's built in the year 1180, so it's not that long until it's a 1000 years old wooden stavechurch:) My favorite of the 28 we have left.
Load More Replies...I was all set to say it would be fabulous in the Harry Potter series, until I saw the cemetery.
It's one of 28 stavechurches who's left in Norway. This one is built in the year 1180. My favorite:)

To see a picture of this building, this morning, to remember the wet stone under your feet, the Scandinavian dew against your cheek is more than exciting. BUT~ being there, as I was, was to be lifted, enchanted, primordially exhilarated! My experience permeated by spirits of sagas and enthralling to the bone left me full and emptied out at the same time. I was one with every age, every creature beyond describing with speech. I landed. I came to be....I found my element as I have never touched anything or been touched before or since. Magick, my friends is in that church, in those stones...breathed in that air! I had been going to Norway all my life and I knew in my bones...no one could take this away from me or convince me it was imagination.
Barn In Valldal
grandfather built his into hillside so back was into 2nd floor and front to barnyard, milking parlor...
The ramp looks to be much older than the barn; was there an older stone barn built along with the ramp that was replaced with the current wooden barn?
Me & my family went here to a ski resort in 1974 when I was 9 years old. My father is from Norway & my great uncle is Torolf Rein he used to be the Naval Defense minister. Such beautiful country!

Looks like a very long snake at first glance! Definitely a slow road.
Renndølsetra
Love this! Here in Regina we'd have elm trees growing all over the rooftop. Their seeds get out of control.
I love all these photos. My daughter and I have traveled through Norway all the way to the Lofoten Islands and taken the ferry from Flam to Bergen. Also remember how traveling from Oslo to Bergen by train one reaches a height where everything was frozen and barren in June! but then Flam was lovely with lilacs blooming everywhere.
I love this! Looks like they could use some goats to trim the roof.
Natural Swimming Pool In The Forest
I took this pic and got the semantics and the background all wrong. It's not a swimming pool, it's not natural and all that. It's a water reservoir made for some rich folks a century ago. Still nice, though ...
Load More Replies...nothing natural about it? the water is coming from a natural source. c'mon people...how can humans find something negative in even the most beautiful things...
Google "natural swimming pools". They're also referred to as green, or organic pools...
Actually, it is not a swimming pool, it was used as a water supply for a farm. The farm is long gone, but the water supply is still there. I used to live nearby, it is actually well within Oslo's city borders.
Under The Aurora
You'd have to drag me out of there kicking and screaming! That is on my bucket list. How BEAUTIFUL!
At The End Of The World, Tjome
I'm from there.. but verdens ende is more like edge of the world if you translate it correctly.
I've been here with my Norwegian relatives. I believe they said this was sort of an old fashioned lighthouse. Burning things were put into the basket to serve as a torch.

Gorgeous! I wonder how low the sun gets in the Summer. Such color!
It is far enough south that the sun goes below the horizon, but i does not get dark in the summermonths
Load More Replies...Looks like some where Mad Martegan would find himself in a tight spot.
What is the large pole on the building and why is there a cage hanging from it?
It's an old lighthouse. You lowered the pole to light a fire in the basket. Then put it up again, for the boats to see.
Load More Replies...What is on top of the building? Why is there a cage hanging from it?
Omg jessica johnsen. Someone andwered that question already. Twice actually.

Old Farmhouses
House In Norway
This house is actually pictured in Wikipedia. Hopefully the roof won't collapse from the trees.
Load More Replies...Why do, or did, they put growing things on their roofs? How about leaks? What about the tree roots? What are some sample of newer construction in that country?
It is a sod roof on top of birch bark over boards. It compresses the bark to keep water out and to insulate the house.
Load More Replies...From which planet/star or galaxy did the Scandinavians decsend (transferred) to our planet World ?
Couldn't be used , the trees make the roof too heavy and the roots would be in the kitchen.

Fjord Houses
This is Urasetra in Norangsdalen valley, a summer farm ("seter"), these small houses were residences for the milk maids https://www.morenytt.no/nyheiter/article10022587.ece
No, they are actually old seter huts up in Norangdal valley, far from the fjord. People stayed here to tend to the animals which were grazing in the mountains during the summer months.

How they built the arch in years gone by is amazing. No cranes in sight.
Old Village
I see some old houses probably built for storage of boats and tools for fishing, but no village.
Correction. Three old sheds for storing boats and fishing gear do not make up a village.

Though it's not inside a cave, this feels a lot like the lake Harry Potter and Dumbledore visited. I used to see Potter-like things often, but it's been a long time.
Fantoft Stave Church, Near Bergen.
Built on the remains of the old stave church that was burnt to the ground in 1992, re-opened 1997.
Burnt by the infamous Varg Vikernes.

it looks so lonely there, i could die of depression looking out far in that mountain waiting for uncertainty :)
Borgund Stavkirke
Is this an old photo of the same stave church as the first (modern, color) photo?
It's not that old of a photo. The date on the headstone for "jenny" is 1914 - 2008. They just used the black and white setting on the camera.

This is not the smallest church in Norway. This is the smallest stave church. The smallest church in Norway is St. Georgs kapell in Neiden.
The building you are referring to in Neiden is not a church.

You are completely wrong. A chapel is church: https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapell And this chapel is regarded as the smallest church in Norway even by Store Norske Leksikon: https://snl.no/Neiden
