Halloween means costumes, spooky decorations, and lots of candy! But for some reason I’ll never understand, not everyone wants to join in. Some people have other things to do or just don’t feel like answering the door all night. Most trick-or-treaters know that a dark porch light means to skip that house, but some still try anyway.

One Halloween night, not a soul in sight, a woman who had a bad migraine turned off her lights and went to bed. Still, a mom kept ringing her doorbell and demanded candy for her kids. Later, the woman went to Reddit to vent her frustration, because the mom even threatened to warn other parents to ignore her house. Which was what she would’ve done in the first place.

Living with migraines can turn a normal evening into a difficult experience; anyone who ever experienced one knows this is true. Besides intense head pain, many people also feel sensitive to light and sound, get nauseous, and become very tired. Bright lights or loud noises often make things worse, so it makes sense that someone with a bad migraine would want to spend a quiet night.

When someone has a migraine, even small interruptions can feel like too much. A ringing doorbell, barking dogs, or people shouting outside add extra noise when it is already hard to handle. Resting in a dark, quiet room can help, but migraines are different for everyone and may last for hours or even days.

The desire for peace and quiet is also why the homeowner wanted to be left alone. On Halloween, there are some unwritten rules. Trick-or-treaters usually go to houses with their porch lights on, while a dark porch means the residents are not giving out candy. Following this simple signal helps everyone have a good evening without any unwanted interruptions.

Good Halloween manners include waiting your turn, not crowding doorways, taking only a fair amount of candy, and thanking those who join in. If a house does not want visitors, both kids and adults should just go to the next home instead of ringing the bell again or asking for a reason.

The situation gets more difficult when someone thinks their own wishes are more important than another person’s choices. Psychologists call this attitude psychological entitlement, which means feeling you deserve special treatment. Studies show that this trait is connected to selfish decisions in relationships and to competing for limited resources.

One interesting study looked at candy: researchers tested if people who felt more entitled were more likely to take candy meant for children. Other results showed that entitlement is also linked to acting aggressively when someone’s ego feels threatened. These findings help explain why some people see a refusal as a personal insult instead of a normal boundary.

If someone won’t take no for an answer, raising your voice usually doesn’t work. Cleveland Clinic psychologist Brianne Markley, PhD, suggests staying calm, listening, and speaking up for yourself. You can show you understand their feelings without giving in or letting things turn into an argument.

But sometimes, even after you explain your side, the other person keeps pushing. In these cases, you can clearly state your boundaries, walk away if the conversation goes nowhere, or ask someone you trust for support. The point isn’t to win every argument. It’s to avoid making the conflict worse and to know when it’s time to stop talking.

Setting personal boundaries and staying calm is hard, but it’s a good way to deal with entitled people. Boundaries can protect privacy, time, and well-being. This could mean not letting in an unexpected guest, or asking someone to stop doing something that feels upsetting. You do not need anyone’s permission to say no.

Things get harder when someone does not respect your decision. Healthy boundaries work best when you state them clearly and respond the same way each time someone crosses them. You do not have to keep explaining or defending a reasonable choice just because someone else does not like it. Respect means understanding that others can make choices we might not make ourselves.

Children often learn how to treat others by observing the adults in their lives. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that parents show kindness, talk about how others feel, and help kids see things from different points of view. These daily lessons help children realize that everyone has their own needs and deserves respect, even when those needs are different from their own.

Parents can help children learn to deal with disappointment without expecting others to solve it for them. Setting clear rules, following through with consequences, and explaining things calmly show kids that being upset does not mean they can ignore other people’s boundaries. Teaching respect begins with showing children that kindness, empathy, and consideration are more important than always getting what they want.

What do you think? Should parents do more to teach their kids to respect other people’s boundaries, even when things don’t go their way?

Netizens sided with the homeowner and praised her response to the entitled mom’s demands

I don't believe this story any more than I did the one nearly identical one from yesterday. Kid/parents just DON'T go up to houses that are dark. Simple as that. Everyone knows that if the lights are off there's no candy.

I'd be tempted to give the kids steak knives and a suggestion of who to use them on.
