A soldier leaning against a heavy weapon, reflecting on disturbing confessions and harsh realities. I worked for a medium sized company and one wintery Saturday morning the boss comes in with his coffee cup and sits next to my drafting table. It was only he and I in this big old building. He begins to tell me that had been a young Marine in WWII and was part of a 2 man bazooka team. They got caught in a skirmish where they didn’t have a clear line of fire but they loaded and fired anyway. As he fired one of his buddies raised his head and he accidentally shot him at close range. This happened 33 years before and as a young man I was, of course, speechless. His 2 sons worked in the business and because I was not sworn to secrecy the next week I mentioned what their dad had told me. The look on the son’s faces was of complete shock. A few days later the bosses wife called me at home and insisted I tell her everything he said. His family had no idea that this happened. She did say that when he left for war he was a happy-go-lucky guy and when he returned he was basically introverted and never talked about his experience, until one snowy Saturday at my desk. Still haunts me 50 years later.

A woman eating popcorn on a bed related to disturbing netizens confessions I read a comment about one the other day where this lady that loved rice kept finding dried rice in her bed and would just eat it as a little snack, not even thinking about it.

She later found out that her cat had fleas and it was not rice. It was tape worm segments. I cringe a little bit every time I think about it now.

A woman washing dishes in a sink, representing domestic stories in netizens confessions. There was a woman complaining about her marriage. I think about that post a lot and wonder if she survived or is ok.

Keeping a secret can eat away at someone from the inside. Research has found that people often think about their secrets even when nobody has brought them up or asked about them.

The more frequently these thoughts return, the lower their reported well-being tends to be. Having something weighing on your mind can be exhausting, especially when you feel you have nowhere to talk about it.

A young boy looking solemn at a desk in a dark room, reflecting disturbing netizens confessions. Saw a post where a guy threw a party with his brother (Brother 1 & 2), while his parents were out of town with Brother 3. They decided to throw a party since their parents weren’t home and it was the weeked, typical teenage stuff. During the party the house got absolutely trashed, and one of their friends got into Brother 3’s room and destroyed a poster he got via Make A Wish at a wrestling match/show that was signed by a ton of wrestlers, something like 15+ signatures. Brother 1 or 2 made a post asking Reddit if they could help him reach out John Cena to get another one. The general consensus in the comment was that while Cena’s known for being kind and helpful, he wasn’t going to help two teenagers who messed up and destroyed their brothers most prized possession. Not the most tragic story but it really made me sad for everyone involved.

A woman with a headscarf in bed receiving IV drip during a disturbing confession context There was a post 3-4 ish years ago from a woman who thought so little of herself she didn't want to bother her husband with the fact that she was terminally ill of cancer, and even tried or intended to arrange that he could reconcile with the woman he considered the love of his life so that he'd be happy and cared for. I've never seen anyone making themselves so small, and the husband was a mean guy too, didn't ever treat her nicely. I felt so sad after reading that post. That woman absolutely never asked for anything for herself, not even while she was sick.

The internet makes it easier to share personal information without revealing your identity. A study on online anonymity found that people were generally more willing to disclose personal details when they could remain anonymous.

This might explain why someone who would never discuss a sensitive subject with friends or family could feel comfortable posting about it under a username. Without having to face someone's immediate reaction, admitting something personal can feel a little less intimidating.

A hand pouring red paint on a surface representing disturbing confessions It wasn’t a confession. Just a post on the cleaning subreddit.

Someone posted photos of their basement and these dark stains that suspiciously looked a lot like blood stains and splatters. They were asking how to clean it up. People kept asking questions and the OP was dodging those. He said it was paint… but what was he painting? The walls had splatters and it got on the concrete floor too?? Who ends up with puddles of paint on the floor? I didn’t see what his painting project could have possibly been. Nothing else was painted. It was just regular concrete.

    It was eerie.

People sometimes share personal secrets because they need someone to talk to and help them make sense of what they've been through. Having someone listen without judging can ease some of that emotional weight and offer reassurance or a fresh perspective.

Mental health experts note that talking through difficult experiences can help people cope with stress. They also point out that being heard and understood can help someone feel less alone, even when the listener can't solve their problem.

A stressed man leaning his head on the steering wheel inside a car, connected to disturbing netizens confessions. Honestly, the absolute most disturbing thing I’ve ever stumbled across online was a random, middle-of-the-night comment from someone casually admitting to a literal unsolved hit-and-run. I was down some late-night rabbit hole, and this anonymous user just dropped this bombshell that they’d unalived a mother and badly hurt her kid while drunk driving back in the mid-90s, saying they were only coming clean now because they figured the legal time limit to prosecute had passed. It was deeply unsettling to read, but the part that actually made my stomach drop was looking at the replies. Someone had gone out of their way to dig up a Los Angeles Times archive from July 1996, and the intersection, the timing, the victims—everything matched up flawlessly. But there was this incredibly weird twist: the old police report said the driver crashed and fled on foot, while the person posting claimed they panicked and sped off in their car. It completely messed with my head. You're left sitting there in the dark realizing you either just read the fragmented, guilt-twisted memories of an actual culprit, or some deeply sick individual who found an obscure 30-year-old tragedy and fabricated a firsthand account just for shock value. I honestly couldn't sleep for days after seeing that.

People sometimes reveal someone else's secrets because they believe others deserve to know what happened. Research on why people expose others' secrets found that they were more likely to do so when they believed the person had behaved immorally.

Feelings of outrage can make someone feel that staying silent would mean allowing that behavior to go unchallenged. As a result, something shared privately can end up reaching a much wider audience.

I had this lady friend, we used to hang out a lot, you know, the usual, drinks, smokes, music, etc. One night, after having gone out together, I went home with her to spend the night. Once we were there, she changed her clothes to something more comfortable took a hypodermic needle out of a drawer went to the bathroom sink and proceeded to stick into her arm and just started to drain blood all over the sink.

I didn't know what was going on so I just promptly ask what was she doing. She calmly replied "Nothing, I just enjoy watching my blood flow and paint the sink red"

Turned out she actually did it fairly regularly. That was one of the more bizarre nights of my life and she one of the more influentiel people to have come into my life.

A caregiver serving food to an elderly woman, sharing quiet moments away from disturbing confessions. I was working at a nursing home and became close to this one lady on hospice. In her 80s, mostly with it during the day, but became slightly confused at night. One day I was setting up her before dinner meds and she starts talking to me about her life and regrets shes had. Just your standard dont take things for granted and take chances when you can type of talk.

Then she gets more serious and looks at me and says theres one thing i should make sure never to do. So im idly listening as I prep her meds and dinner and she hits me with "whatever you do, do not take anybody's life".

So im fully paying attention now. She starts talking about how its haunted her her entire life, about how she still gets nightmares about someone finding out, the anxiety and fear of getting caught even years later. How it wasn't worth it even though her brother deserved it. She says all of this and then looks at me and makes me promise not to take anyone's life, no matter what happens. We never talked about it again and based on our future interactions, I dont think she even remembered telling me.

A man wearing sunglasses holding a finger to his lips, keeping dark netizens confessions secret. I moved to London in the early 90s and was staying in a hostel. There was a young Russian guy there, which was quite a novelty back then as meeting Russians in the West wasn't common. We chatted a few times and sometimes went for a couple of beers, and I jokingly called him an "apparatchik" (a party member well placed in the society). One day he asked me if I could help him find some contact in the jewelry business. I didn't know anybody but could maybe help. The guy then showed me a small pouch which he emptied on the table, and it was a good handful of diamonds. I asked him "are they real, or fakes that you want to sell?" he told me they were real. When I asked him where he got that he smiled, put a finger on his mouth to gesture "secret" and just told me "Russian apparatchik". ex best friend took me on a long car ride one day and confessed how she’d been cheating on her husband (and mine and my husband’s very close friend) for most of their 8 years of marriage. But wait it gets worse. She had refused to have intimacy with her own husband the whole marriage, and justified sleeping with these other men to “see if she could enjoy it!” and “she did ” she told me as if i should be happy for her. But wait it gets worse. Every single one of the men were someone her husband considered a friend and she even coerced her husband into loaning one of the men money (her husband was very wealthy), so that man could start his own business. But wait it gets worse. She also had told her husband their whole marriage that she doesn’t want kids, even though she told him she did before they married and she knew he really wanted kids, so imagine my surprise when she told me she met a security guard on a cruise ship (that she was on with her husband) that she had intimacy with him and how she realized she could possibly be pregnant.. And when she wasn’t, she was disappointed, and it made her realize she really does want kids, just not with her husband.

And that’s all just the tip of the iceberg.

A post I once read was from a man who admitted that he was glad his son lost his life. He had an 8-year old son who he took good care of (in his own words) and made sure he had everything he needed. But he was unable to actually love him or grow attachment to him. When the son lost his life in a car accident, he felt happy he was rid of the obligations. He and his wife divorced and now he spends his time at a private lake house, inviting over friends to hangout and women for one night stands.

OP admitted it was messed up and that people like him should not be parents. But I still really hope the kid never noticed.

There is also an infamous one about a woman who complained that her small son was clingy, and that she was annoyed that he insisted on spending time with her and that he always talked to her. At the very end she revealed that the boy’s father was a jerk and had recently gone and that the kid recently stopped going to therapy. Geez, I wonder why he so desperate for attention…

Had an absolutely charming, incredibly smart-looking close friend for a few years. It took me about 1,5-2 years to find out everything about her life was a lie. Even the smarts, she'd read some detailed article on a subject and present ideas as if they were her own, but never knew anything deeper. Pretended to speak many languages by secretly watching a foreign movie with subs on, then "translating" some cool scenes to us.

She made up a story about her father being violent to her mom to make excuses for failing her uni exams, lied to people about being a medical student to look smart, and would give them very dangerous advice, lied to her family about being a brilliant medical student (don't know if they believed her), and about many, many other things.

She was an incredibly fun person, but an awful toxic friend. Still, I was afraid she'd lose her mind completely if I revealed her secrets to everyone. So I only quietly told the people she was being toxic or potentially putting in danger, so she couldn't do any damage anymore. Several times I tried to talk her into going into therapy, but I stopped... She was in complete denial about me knowing everything, I was so afraid she'd take her life if she found out what everyone thought of her. One day she just packed her things, said goodbye with a hug and a huge smile on her face, and left for another country to "pursue her medical studies". I've kept evidence of all the craziness in case it comes back someday.

I'd say that if you genuinely pay attention to people around you, you'll find out many creepy stories like this. Some people see friends come and go, and actually never have any idea of what's going on in their lives.
