Women On Tumblr Point Out The Most Common Mistakes In Female Characters Created By Male Writers

Sometimes when you read a book, you ought to suspend your disbelief to believe the fantasy. However, there are times when it’s impossible to ignore some of the blatant inaccuracies, especially when they are connected to a substantial demographic (like half the world’s population).

It’s no secret that, at times, male authors describe women in the weirdest most sexist ways, creating awkward, unrealistic female characters that, unfortunately, other men often buy into. Well, women are not too happy about it, and some have come together to compile an ‘open letter’ to men writers. From the realities of periods to the functionality of high heels, these ladies cover a wide range of topics, correcting the misconceptions found in books with female heroes penned by male authors.

Now, we are not trying to be overly feminist, but if a strong female character demeans an average men’s masculinity, there’s something wrong with the guys themselves, not the women and feminism is not to be blamed of that.

Scroll down below to learn a thing or two about the gender roles and real women. Girls, if you have your own additions, don’t forget to leave them in the comments!

ALL OF THIS! ++++! And women in combat or post apocalypse roles, they don't have a toiletry kit to have clean shaven pits and legs. Or a 5 step face care to remove zits, hairs, bushy eyebrows, bags, or black circles. And where are they getting so much water that they have shampooed, conditioned hair daily while dying of thirst and starving and under a constant threat? Deal with it, women in their natural state are furry.

The problem with badly written female characters is about more than bras and periods. I find all these “strong female leads” unrealistic because they don’t do the one thing all women I’ve ever met in my life always do: talk to other women about what happened and how they feel about it.

If a woman has said she is not interested in you, she does not want to be "convinced" through a series of gestures you deem romantic.

I seriously witnessed a guy express annoyance at a girl 'choosing to deal with her period' (by changing her tampon in the bathroom) at a particular time and place because he deemed it a stupid time/location to do it.

So glad to see gardeners included in the list of reasons for having short nails! I have short hair and short nails. Both were a choice made for convenience - I garden a ton and backpacking with super short hair is soooo nice! Everyone always assumes it's a statement about my sexuality.

I would like to add to this list that not all women wear bras and/or make up to sleep! Therefore, we don't wake up wearing a bra and a perfect face of make up! If we do fall asleep with our make up on, it doesn't look that great the next day!

I actually find it shocking that some women do wear bras in their sleep. Like ... whaaat? That sounds so uncomfortable to me. I definitely go to sleep in my make up sometimes, though ... due to sheer laziness. But I guarantee you it doesn't look pretty the next morning.

Why is it that almost every strong female character I see is some violent Mary Sue chick that can kill everyone with ease? Violence does not make someone strong or powerful, it just makes you violent.

What I, as a woman, learned from this is that I'm way more uncaring about my appearance than most of the women who contributed to the Tumblr thread. I don't shave anything. I don't wear underwear unless I have a skirt on. I only just obtained bras in the last couple of years that my boobs have gotten bigger as I gained weight; I spent my teens and 20s outspokenly bra-free. The only makeup I own is eyeshadow, which I don't put on very much because the only places I routinely go are Walmart and my therapist's. I don't have a clue where to even start with other makeup, and don't really care anyway; if people don't want to look at my splotchy acne skin, too bad. The clothes I usually put on if I leave the house are jeans and a t-shirt or tanktop, usually. At home I wear the same shirts or tanktops and pj pants or boxers. I'm disabled and usually in some level of pain, and very tired at all times, so a lot of this could be because of that. I go for comfort and ease first, appearance second.

Being in pain does make a difference - I use to care a lot more about clothing and now it's comfort first and appearance second just as you say. Shaving - I'm blonde so what they eye can't see the woman gets away with!

uhmmmm... though I agree with the main point of this entire article, I do disagree about nipples. Some bras are thin or with minimal padding, and for those women with pointy nipples, there's nothing wrong with you XD even if it shows through your bra when cold or aroused. Some are just pointier than others- despite what the article says above, sometimes it *is* still an issue, especially if you're not a fan of tons of padding and enjoy thin t-shirts. (or can only afford thin cheap t shirts, join the club xD)

There have been winter days in my workplace that were so cold that I was pointy all day long. The nipples were rubbing on the fabric of my bra and at the end of the day, they hurt like HELL. Nothing funny about that. :-(

As a husband of 18 years I agree with all things said. But if you are reading a romance it's much nicer to read about an idealized reality than the stark truth. I have stark truth every day of my life. Coping often enough isn't easy. So reading about lifes lighter moments is much more pleasant. Men are also different than stereotypical males in action movies. I have little muscle, my stomach is flabby and I cry. I am not tough as steel. My back aches when I get out of bed. I am so glad that I'm in a happy relationship and don't need to go searching for a partner.

I hear what you're saying, Oliver. I think the problem here though is that the myth of the "perfect woman" who always looks freshly made up or is miraculously shaved during the apocalypse isn't just in romance novels - it's so pervasive you see it in ads, movies, books of all genres. There are even some women who feel compelled to wake up before their lover and quietly go do their makeup so they aren't seen without it! (Rare but it happens.)

Lot of women have some strong opinions about bras and periods in books. I stopped wearing bras three years ago and with the IUD I don't have a period and even before that I never had much of a period to speak of. I guess what I would tell male writers and female writers, a normal reaction to a man being a f*****g d**k to you is not to sleep with him and realize he is 'the one' the normal reaction is to tell him he is a f*****g d**k and if he continues to harass you, you will have to go to the police. I am so sick of reading how these women get into these abusive relationships like it is some sort of love story.

Women KNOW when they’ve had sex. They don’t wake up unsure—virgins especially. Also sex has a smell. Character types who wear perfume/aftershave can be detected when hiding in close proximity.

Also breast reduction surgery is *fantastic*. Relieved pain in my back muscles, the pain of the back strap. ( and yes i wore professionally fitted bras ). Relieved the pain over the shoulders, relieved the horrrrilble rash under the boobs that HURT. Relieved the neck pain. and guess what ! a woman with all that pain relief feels a bit more like doing the horizontal folk dancing :)

Incredibly minor comment, but based on my 7+ years of work in construction design, women's restrooms tend to be larger and have more stalls than men's rooms. I suspect that women's restrooms have lines for the simple fact that men have the obvious advantage of urinals. It sure is very convenient to need only to whip out one's d**k to urinate and not have to sit down every time. So yeah, I'm just here to confirm that life as a man is way easier, and any incel/MRA idiot out there who says otherwise is lying.

Yeah, I think it was worded a little unclearly, but that was the point she was trying to make. There are generally more *stalls* in women's restrooms, but if you take into account urinals, men tend to have more options.

i'm just wondering, in what kind of novels are women described like that, and who buys all those novels, which makes men write more of them... bc in the books i read, they never mention anything like that about the female protagonists, no matter if they are written by a man or a woman.

I have seen it in romance novels and teen novels, but I don't read either of those so I don't see this type of thing either. To be honest though, I don't read much of anything unless it is for a class because college just took all the fun and entertainment out of reading.

    - Women who are fighting in high heels with long hair in ponytails. I have seen this so many times. In high heels you can barely walk and ponytail is so convenient to be caught by opponent and used against her - no, we don't always match our underwear, in fact, most of the times we don't bother - women at work that requires precision, hygiene, safety precautions etc do not wear hair floating around their face and shoulders, no matter how sexy it would look - after and often even during work, we don't look cute and pretty, we get tired and after 8-10 hour shift we can look like hell and need a break - yes, women DO get periods once a month or so, male writers usually forget that - we do not wear thigh high stockings all the time, even when bathing or sleeping and with nothing else except heels. Please, Serpieri take a note at that. Most of women hate stockings all together, they are horribly uncomfortable.

Having a baby: - not everyone goes into labour in public - when waters break, it's usually not on the sidewalk -not everyone labours in the cab, then has her baby 10 minutes after arriving to the hospital -We don't always yell at the midwives. Sometimes there are complications, several day long labours, emergency c-sections, after which holding your baby isn't always just pure bliss

I can't believe most of this stuff even has to be explained! Like, people actually think women casually wear makeup and lingerie at home? People actually think someone would look sexy in a bra two-sizes to small, as opposed to looking like they've attached a miniature camel on their chest, not the slightest bit attractive and in lots of pain? People actually think pee uncontrollably 'drizzles out' with gravity, or think you can hold in period like pee? Have these people ever met a real woman?

Correction: Not a miniature camel - it'd look like you've attached a balloon animal version of a hedgehog to your chest. You'd just have weird cluster multiple small lumps.

Women cannot wear cute frilly bras with a T-shirt...we have to wear T-shirt bras which are not sexy. Because wearing a cute frilly on with a T-shirt gives your T-shirt weird a*s bumps and looks stupid. Women smell weird while on period. We are constantly cleaning ourselves. We often sneak to the bathroom without our purses otherwise everyone knows we are on our period. Pads are like wearing a saddle. Shaving causes red bumps on many women and the thought of a man shaving me would scare the hell out of me. M M

I'm confused by all the parts about how all women wear bras all the time and they are essential, etc etc. I absolutely hate bras and I've been wearing the same gross one (when strictly necessary, otherwise I don't wear one at all) for over five years because every time I consider buying a fresh one, I am filled with rage at the thought of spending $50 on a tight uncomfortable contraption that is solely for the purpose of making it look like I don't have nipples.

It all depends on your boobs and the life you live. The size of your boobs and if your nipples get hard easily, than if you have a busy life or around a lot of people. Or lazy like me, it doesn't go on until I have to do something but once it's on it stays on the rest of the day.

Geez, sorry ladies, but no wonder men are replacing us with other men. We're too demanding! As a woman who has seem men, i don't like seeing so much realism on a guy. A movie it's just entertainment, so reality on it's people can be dropped a bit to fit a cool fetish. I choose a chiseled dude over a flabby beer belly wearer. And for the ladies, a variation of a Marilyn Monroe wold do wonders for me. Characters are our fantasies, they were design so we could escape from the s****y reality of which we live on. Relax and let us dream!

I wore stilettos for years, in fact for quite a while I wore nothing under a 10cm heel! I ran in them and walked across grassy parkland without any trouble! That sounds like something from a movies doesn’t it! But guess what?? Now I’m paying for it! I have a neuroma in my right right foot and can’t wear any heel over 2cm! I also have to have padding under the ball of my foot! They may look sexy but honestly it’s not worth it!

If writers focused on writing about people and less about trying to classify women as a wholly different species than men, I think we all might advance a little.

High heel shoes are a torture and are so bad for one's back and health in general. Plus, they make us seem weak andstupid, as we can't barely run or simply move freely.

When I've been asleep since 1000pm and its 2 am being woke up by a dude trying to slip it in is not romantic at all. I am not every night dream of some dude taking me this way, I'm not turned on or horny I've been asleep and just wanted to stay that way. Now I'm awake I may or may not fall back to sleep and I feel sorry for anyone who has to deal with me the next day when I've been woken up like that.

One thing that no one has mentioned yet, is the fact that, when you turn on a movie, and the credits start rolling, there are like 12 male actors listed, then 2 females. Let's back up here. Women comprise more than 50 % of the population. 😕

This isn't even close to accurate. Did you see Ocean's 8 by chance? Or any moving starring Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Reese Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, etc...their names are not 13th and 14th in the credits.

The fact that some men need this as a guidebook makes me sick. But on the other hand I am grateful I grew up in a houseful of women. I can understand and empathise a whole lot better. I dated a girl with large breasts and man if I was in her position and had the money I would go for breast reduction surgery and I hate the idea of going under a knife for any reason personally. All the days of back and knee pain complaints :( . Next time a lady you know is snappy or down think about this list it may help you understand more.

Some complains are weird...I wear white pants on my period and I am a relatively heavy bleeder, gotta wear the right pads or you will get blood on any pants anyway, black won't save you cause when you sit you will leave a blood puddle behind. Also, vaginimus, men have no idea about the difficulties.

In all fairness, some of the worst writing I've seen about women has been done by women. I read what was supposed to be a mystery novel (ended up being like a bored housewife fantasy) where she would not stop talking about the main character's breasts.

Yeah, in my experience trash is just trash regardless of gender. There have been plenty of novels and even fanfiction I've read where I didn't know / notice / care about the gender of the writer because they just wrote all characters like people rather than stereotypes of any particular sort.

I fall into the category of butch women, I own this, I look darn good in my flannels and short hair, but you bet I'm rocking a full manicure and double ds and I look great in a dress. I just want to be comfortable. Large boobs hurt to the point I would gladly chop them off to eliminate my back and rib pain so yes I shove them into a tight ass sports bra and squish them tight and fit against my chest. I have painful periods and will still ride my motorcycle while cramping so hard I could cry. Write dynamic women men. Yall can do better and it's why Frankenstein is literally one of the best books written by a women before she was 30. Shape up men women have been writing better than you for centuries.

Adding to the vast variety of comments about tampons: the box is rarely any help. When I was first learning to use one- I remember learning no more from that “directions” on the box then I already assumed. Took me 30 minutes of crying and feeling pathetic to figure it out 😅

Bigger bras - not available from Victoria Secret or sports bra shops. I can wear a total of ONE brand and style of boring underwired torture device. Bras are like shoes, I have to wear on if there are people, I have to wear one if doing anykind of manual labor, I have to wear them for sports including swimming damn it. Any deviation in size or style will result in discomfort (including breathing/eating restrictions) to any movement resulting in partial or complete escape of boobage.

One of my favorite (and that's saying something if you know me) books is What Light, by Jay Asher, but there's a part that gets me every time. The main character (a teenage girl with long hair) puts it back in a ponytail, THEN pulls strands out to frame her face. If I tried that, the best-case scenario is that half of my hair ends up billowing up on the sides and looking like someone tried to pull it out of the ponytail. Worst case, nearly all the hair just comes out. The character also mentions (they live in a trailer for the holidays) that sometimes, after a shower, she wanders around without a shirt on before remembering that a bunch of high school boys work outside. I don't know any girl who would forget to put a shirt on after a shower. As a choice, maybe, but how could you forget that you're not wearing an entire shirt or bra or anything? Especially in a trailer with open curtains? I fully acknowledge that not all women are the same, but these things just seem odd to me.

One thing I loved about working in the medical field was the scrubs. I started in the 80's when big hair and clown make up was in. Think Mimi from the Drew Carey show but thinner and less ugly. When I had to be in surgery at 6 am that s**t had to stop! I gained weight, well, because scrubs! And my eyes weren't even opened at 6am let a!one made up. The plus. My Wasband liked the skinny, Tammy Fay version and cheated with a younger, broker me. My 2nd husband cheated with a fatter version of me. So Ive given up completely. Got tatted up and now shave one side of my head. Occasionally my pits and legs. Got a vibrator. Sorry. Not sorry.

There are A LOT of comments about periods but VERY LITTLE about menopause, and especially about hot flashes above. They're a pain. Especially when I'm cooking because with the heat of the stove and the hot flashes my face will be shiny with beads of sweat. Even my hair will be soaked with sweat, and even if I washed it earlier in the day, I may still have to wash it. Also, even on cool days I can be hot. Typically, I wear short sleeves or sleeveless clothes all year long with a jacket because you can take a jacket off if you're hot but not a sweater. And coffee or hot, spicy food make the hot flashes worse.

The only part of this I disagree with is the bra. Not all women, even with large breasts, wear a bra most of the time, if at all. I have extremely large breasts... It wasn't until 2 years ago I realized what bras do to a woman's chest muscles, shoulders, etc. Think about it this way; put your arm in a sling every day... What happens to the muscles? It's the same with your chest. Wearing a bra is more harmful to the body, and my very large 34G size breasts are more perky and healthy than ever. I'm also significantly stronger, without changing how I exercise. (Fyi, it will hurt for a few weeks if you give up the boob sling.)

I really enjoyed this article. I do some work in the 3D industry and trust me the guys are just like writers for movies or TV shows, they have a totally, messed up, idea of what women go through. Reality is just too ugly for them to realize when creating outfits, hair or poses for the 3D women characters. SAD! I grew up without a dad and knew first hand what mom and my sis had to deal with. I did drag for a few years, being gay and I tell my friends all the time, taking 4 hours to get ready, walking in heels and then trying to go the bathroom, taking down the pantyhose and undies and then, being a dude, retucking my s**t and getting it all "looking" just right.. no thanks. Glad that phase of my life is over! lol

Non-standard body makes buying clothes a miserable experience. I buy loose separates that at least fit - mostly. Small boobs that hang towards my arm pits with the nipples pointing down means you are never "perky." And many years ago, when I needed one, a nursing bra in a size 38A didn't exist. Sure, they do now, but i needed one 45 years ago.

Writers, regardless of gender, should be free to describe female characters whichever they see fit and not necessarily to reflect the daily struggles of an average woman at all times. And I find it too general when it says that all/most male writers male authors "...describe women in the weirdest ways, creating an awkward unrealistic image that, unfortunately, other men often buy into." Who are these writers? What percentage of men buy into these unrealistic image? These article generally lumps most/all male writers and readers as sexists and misogynists. When I read a book, I don't look at how the female character fits into the real society. I see how the character fits into the book as a whole. Because at the end of the day, it's just what it is - a book.

I'm trying to recall any book, film or play where the female lead has had a period! Let alone the wrong colour or consistency. This complaints above seem to be women complaining about every day problems and not what is represented in 'art'. And if women want women to be more accurately portrayed on stage and in film, better get writing.

About bras--it is entirely possible to develop a skin yeast infection in hot and humid weather and an underwire bra. The best remedy seems to be athlete's foot powder or the stuff they sell for abies with diaper rash. About periods and sex, for me, and I suspect for a lot of women who suffer from cramps AND bloating, i.e. swelling, the idea appeals about as much as morris dancing when you have bee stings on the bottoms of your feet and you're slightly allergic to them.

As for a woman having sex during her period, varying slightly with the severity of cramps, bloating, swelling, etc., for me, at least, that idea has all the appeal of Morris dancing when you have bee stings on the bottoms f your feet and are slightly allergic to bees.

In the end of the day, yes reality is reality, but film industry creates esthetic or sexual look for women and men. We go to pop kind of movies due to their fantasy like allure, rarelly we want mirror effect of reality, so this topic looks drawn too far.

When I worked for a couturier, we consulted often with a woman who did custom bras. Some very busty ladies had to have very specific underpinnings for their formal wear. // The main problem that women have with badly fitting bras is that they wear too large a band size. The hint? If the back of your bra is riding up between your shoulder blades, THROW IT OUT. Go DOWN a band size and UP a cup size. /// You don't have to spend a fortune to get bras that fit. Once you know what brand and size you need, go online. I have some wonderful things from La Perla and Natori that I got for up to 80% off on sale.

Dafaq you're reading ppl? Really? Books that say some girl inserted a tampon and became aroused? Books that say you wake up with your bra on? Books that... for f***sake, you simply look at a woman's calves and you can say how often she's wearing high hills. And don't get me started on makeup. Really ppl, move on, get to reading good literature. It's worth it.

Not disputing all this, but after so many posts detailing the effects of bras on boobs and tampons I started wondering if they're just listing their own problems or is this really what you want to see in every movie represented? There is a lot of relevant stuff here too, but you some of it you might consider why you want it represented in the context of a movie.

I don't know what shows those women are watching, but I've never seen any show, written by anyone, that suggested tampon insertion was sexy, or that ear rings were sharp ? Nor holding in a period. I have seen women write man-hating shows that accuse men of all kinds of crazy things..... this this thread.

The amount of people mentioning menstruation makes me feel I've lived in some sort of golden cloud where the books I read just don't bring it up. The closest I can even think of is a random comment about throwing some women's hygiene products in the shopping cart when restocking on the run. Is it seriously that common a topic in fiction?

It is not impossible to run in heels. My ex-girlfriend once did it. I walked on the street and just listened a strange and loud and rythmic noise and could not believe what could it be, and when I turned around it was her. (She wanted to tell me something and I had not my cell so she ran after me) It was one of the cutest thing I saw in my life.

Women have one thing in common, they are genetically women. All other similarities stop there (i.e. all shapes and sizes). But consider that there is no limits on fiction. If I want to write about a female character that uses earrings as a weapon then it is simply a matter of how well I tell my story.

Maybe I don't read a lot of trashy literature but I haven't run into any of these problems so far. I don't think I've ever read a book by a man that went into anything about periods except maybe The Book of Negroes and that was handled fine if I remember correctly (it's been a few years, but the book is also historical so it doesn't go into stuff like tampons).

If you are reading smut and it says: "She whipped her wet hair back in the rain and started running gracefully on her heels in the rain", who is even assuming that they are trying to paint a realistic picture. The only places where I've ever seen ANY of the things this post is about depicted wrongly in books, is books where the writing is already not realistic in the first place(because it's written just for fun, and doesn't care e.g. smut, or because it's trying to paint an image that would just not happen in real life). If you have a problem with characters not being realistic enough(man, woman whatever) there will be few books which you can't criticize. And don't make it an issue about gender, suddenly because everyone is usually misrepresented in books. Doesn't mean the writer is not aware of what you go through.

Relieved the pain over the shoulders, relieved the horrrrilble rash under the boobs that HURT.

Women cannot wear cute frilly bras with a T-shirt...we have to wear T-shirt bras which are not sexy. Because wearing a cute frilly on with a T-shirt gives your T-shirt weird a*s bumps and looks stupid. Women smell weird while on period. We are constantly cleaning ourselves. We often sneak to the bathroom without our purses otherwise everyone knows we are on our period. Pads are like wearing a saddle. Shaving causes red bumps on many women and the thought of a man shaving me would scare the hell out of me. M M

It all depends on your boobs and the life you live. The size of your boobs and if your nipples get hard easily, than if you have a busy life or around a lot of people. Or lazy like me, it doesn't go on until I have to do something but once it's on it stays on the rest of the day.

To have long nails as a lesbian is to risk slicing open your lover from the inside and giving her some kind of infection.

We have to listen and read a lot of men stuff that hasn't any interest to us. Always.

I don't know what shows those women are watching, but I've never seen any show, written by anyone, that suggested tampon insertion was sexy, or that ear rings were sharp ? Nor holding in a period. I have seen women write man-hating shows that accuse men of all kinds of crazy things..... this this thread.

I would love to see this as what women writers get wrong about male characters. and before anyone calls out sexist BS on that sentence, I am a woman asking to see this list. Women get just as many things wrongs about male characters as men do about female characters.

I would break my ankle. just cause you saw one woman do it doesn't make it ring true for us all.

Women have one thing in common, they are genetically women. All other similarities stop there (i.e. all shapes and sizes). But consider that there is no limits on fiction. If I want to write about a female character that uses earrings as a weapon then it is simply a matter of how well I tell my story.

Women have one thing in common: they are women. Not all women are biologically or genetically female.

"Lesbians and women who work with their hands ..." Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the last memo I got led me to believe that lesbians ARE women.

Put it this way : "Lesbians, and other women who are not lesbians but who work with their hands"...

Wow!? Wait, so you are saying paperback fiction isn't an accurate depiction of actual reality?! I am shocked beyond belief and rest my chiseled jaw on my muscular forearm while contemplating how to be more emotionally available to my SO.

The kissing one is fun, I used to chatter non stop to a guy who didn't talk much on our way home, i would build up then stop walking suddenly like i had all these important points, and he would kiss me....worked every time. Sometimes life is just like a rom-com

Ok, men, let's create a list of why it sucks to be a man too. It's only fair since we're constantly bombarded by how horribly women have been and continue to be treated.

It's annoying to hear about the mistreatment of women? Image what it is like experiencing it.
