‘I didn’t know she was dating a black boy, did you?’ Mom Shuts Down Comments About Her Daughter Dating A Black Guy
What traits would you hope the person your child is dating would have? respectful, kind, and caring, maybe? Well to some people race is also on that list, but not for Mississipi mother Heather Boyer. Recently, her daughter began dating someone new, who happened to also be black and she undoubtedly approved because of the way he treated her. He had all the characteristics that she felt her daughter deserved in a boyfriend, but when her daughter changed her profile picture to an image of the young couple, her mom received a racist text that revealed the sad truth that not everyone shared her views on what mattered in a relationship.

Boyer received a text about the profile picture from someone who thought she may have an issue with the skin color of her daughter’s new boyfriend. The mom was taken aback, but instead of responding to the text in a negative way she chose to use the experience to create a larger response to this kind of mentality and wrote a heartfelt Facebook post about the experience.

“Today my daughter changed her profile picture. After maybe 5 minutes I get a text ..” I didn’t know she was dating a black boy, did you?” It took me all day to think up a response, which I didn’t send personally but thought I would share for anyone else that “may not know” Yes in fact I did know, but the color of his skin doesn’t define who he is. What does define who is he is how he treats my daughter. I see my daughter dating a boy that comes to my house and shows me nothing but respect (a big deal in my book). It’s always Yes Ma’am, No Ma’am, we talk about football and baseball, he tells me bye when he leaves, and has not once shown me a lack of manners or respect.
I see my daughter dating a boy who treats her good. He takes her on dates, to ballgames, out to eat..not to a club or partying on the weekends.
I see my daughter dating a boy who takes her to church with him. Every Sunday. He plays in the band, she sits with his family. How many young men these days make church a priority? None of the others have.
He doesn’t hit her, cuss her, lie to her, or make her cry. Would I rather her date a white boy that did, to keep from her dating another race? Absolutely not. So that’s my response to the question I was asked. And I know people have their own opinion, but at the end of the day, the fact that my daughter has someone that loves her and treats her like a queen makes me happy. That’s something I’ve never had in my life and I’m glad she does.”
People loved the post and responded with photos of their own interracial relationships
According to census.gov, the percentage of U.S married-couple households that are interracial or interethnic grew from 7.4 percent in 2000 up to 10.2 percent and in 2016 it grew 2.8 more percentage points. While there was an overall increase across the nation, in Missippi where Boyer lives, most counties did not see a significant change.
And were shocked that in this day and age people were still so narrow-minded
Boyer was touched by all the loving posts and said the responses to her post had been overwhelmingly positive
I told my daughter when she started dating that I didn't care if she dated a guy or a girl, just as long as they treated her with respect. I don't see why race/colour/gender should still be such an issue.. I guess some people just have to be whingers about something just to get their fix of attention..
Together for 16 years, married for almost 11. My grandmother thought it was nice that we were getting married but "we shouldn't have kids together." We have an awesome 8 year old son! 53297001_1...28a72a.jpg
I am reading all of these stories and looking at the pictures, as I get chills, all I can say is Amen sister. I want happiness for my children, I do not care what race, color, or gender they are. Please just treat my child with respect and love them. That is all a mom can ask for with her kids.
john if you are going to quote "statistics" you better show where you found them. Otherwise we could think you are just making numbers up. And why would a bigot do that ? ( yes that is ironic )

My mom response was "Lokk, this man treats my daughter like a queen. I never seen how much a man love his other half as much as he loves her." She even told them that if they keep their attitude up like they were doing, she was going to cut them out of her life completely. Some has changed but we do have family members we haven't talked to since I started dating my husband and that was over 12 years ago.
Yakisha, I'm in love with your name! And I admire your mom! I'm dating a German, too(born in Namibia and grew up in South Africa), aren't they just the tits? <3 all the best <3 I hope your family open their hearts and that you'll be able to rekindle with them. No, what it sounded like is this woman & her family are religious so this is important to her and them. Just like it is NOT important to you everyone is free to value what they value. Respect that.

It's very strange for me, a Brazilian, that the possibility of a black and white being together can cause a stir, and stories like this make a famous case and people argue about it. Although racism is a big problem in Brazil, it's no big deal that people of different colors or backgrounds form a couple. You will not see people raising this question, and yes, one does well to the other.
I'm really glad they got so much support from everyone! To be honest, I remember how taken aback I was to learn that it is normal to self-classify into 'races' in the US. I thank god, this isn't the norm for people to think this way. Yea a few bad apples here and there, mostly it's a much better world now than before. As we make progress, bigotry, racism and ignorance will evolve out, slowly but surely. As a child I remember stories from my father, not many actually but to see the world I live in versus the past, it's a good future for kids.
This is one of my favorite articles I've read here. I take so much joy when love conquers ignorance. To overcome cultural boundaries and stigmas, to follow your heart and enjoy happiness... I feel sorry for the poor people who were raised and taught to think this is bad somehow. Hope they get to experience true love and acceptance in their lives. Aho.
How can people worry that they are different races??? They are both the same race -- the human race. The more science discovers about humans, the less defined the whole concept of race becomes.
TBH that's never gonna happen. People need to start ignoring the racists.
Load More Replies...It is shocking people still have issues with who other people choose to date. An adult relationship with another adult, whether their gay, straight, interracial or same race is NO ONE ELSES BUSINESS! If they’re not hurting anyone, who cares who someone chooses to love? People need to turn their rage toward real issues like pedophilia, rape, child abuse, domestic abuse, famine, keeping abortion legal, Substance and Mental Health issues... the list is endless but shouldn’t include whose dating who. This subject is very (pardon the pun) Black and White: love is love and you’re damn lucky to get it in your life. To the judgemental a******s who feel they need to comment: I feel sorry for you in that lonely existence you’ve created.
Because partying is important in a relationship. (Pure, unbridled sarcasm in case you didn't catch on.)

My SO (38 black M) and I (35 white F) still get sideways looks if we're affectionate in public (which obviously makes us double down and amp up the PDAs 😂). It's either that we're interracial or we're just so damn sexy 😂
I also am unable to fathom racist problems, in a relationship it's about love, respect and to work at a strong loving life, a future with every day issues is enough, there is no room for racial problems that should not exist is our society today !!!
wow to some people are so racist and i hate it but dont judge the people by there skin.
It is very odd for me, a brazilian, that a black and a white date, and than, stories like that make a famous case and people debates about. Therefore racism is a big issue in Brazil, it is not abig deal people from diferent color or origin form a couple.
I'm literally colorblind. Must be nice. But on a more serious note, virtue signaling is not ok.

Colour is never an issue, rather woman opressing religions are. She seems fine with that boy, beautyful couple.

It's referred to as "hybrid vigor" and occurs throughout nature: plants, animals and humans. Biologist Aarathi Prasad presented a documentary based on research called IS IT BETTER TO BE MIXED RACE? It is fascinating and informative -- about 45 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZZAckwJHsQ
Colour is never an issue, rather woman opressing religions are. She seems fine with that boy, beautyful couple. I am gipsy, and we come in ALL the colours and shapes, so I guess we are used to it anyway. I look like the whitest pale scandinav and my wife look african, but we are just from different gipsy tribes in the same country, my daughter is prettier than than the models of today looking like a mulattina. I wouldnt mind her finding whatever kind of boy, as long as he passes the one rule I have. Treat her like your eyeball.
That is just as racist- saying that. Believing both races should stick to their own. You dont mention a black woman and a white man- what is THEIR motivation in your opinion- which is disrespectful to just about everyone.

Load More Replies...I think it's more about raising awareness that prejudices like this still exist.
Load More Replies...Yes, it is wrong that a misspelling is what you find "most disturbing" about an article on racism.
Load More Replies...The problem is if you imply there is something wrong with him being the race that he is.
