Despite their name, Australian Shepherds have little to do with the Down Under. This dog breed has originated in the Basque region between France and Spain, where many shepherds came from an Australian descent, hence the Australian dog name. Later on, because of their incredible trainability and herding abilities, these dogs were favorited by American farmers and cowboys where the official breed registration began. Even though these shepherd dogs are still working in farms herding cattle, their big brains and warm hearts have won over regular people across the world, too. Bored Panda has compiled a list of examples why Australian Shepherds are the best dog breed to have around.
From clinging onto their humans and being the best dogs ever to solving just about any puzzle they encounter, you could argue that these K9s are the Good Will Huntings of the animal kingdom. Aussies do need quite a lot of exercise, and though they excel in dog training, when bored they may invent their own games, which to a very busy owner might appear as destructive hyperactivity. Also, some of these dogs still have a lot of working qualities in them, so they might even try to herd little kids.

Yes, it is very, very irresponsible breeding, many offspring are born both deaf and blind simply because the breeder is going for "lethal white" (all white), its sickening. Glad this boy found a good owner though.

Grooming does not necessarily mean that the dog is being shaved, it could be brushing, a bath, cleaning the ears, trimming the nails. However in this instance the dog was shaved, and you are correct, Double coated dogs should not be shaved.

Aahh yes - Dogs Always want their photo taken. On 5 acres surrounded by 5 acre lots - you don’t know where dog is and they can’t possibly know what you are doing, you go outside grabbing (camera/phone) to take photo for a report. Stopping bout ½ acre from front door, you gaze about “what’s best shot” and suddenly look down about 2 metres in front of you. Yep DOGGO sitting pretty waiting for you to take its photo.

Hello Nikki D! When my family got their first Aussie, Zelda, we've been told that traditionally, the tail was docked because it could withstand grave injuries while the dogs were working with the farm animals or it cause worst injuries to the dog itself (If the tail was pinned down by one sheep, for exemple, the rest of them could step on the immobilized dog after :( ). And since vet medicine wasn't what is it today, that could be fatal for the dog. Unfortunately, I don't know when or how some of the Aussies began having naturally bobbed tails, but it happened at some point. I had three Aussie in my life so far, two with a tail, Zelda born without one. I think the percentage is around 15-ish% born with a natural bobbed tail nowadays. As cute as it is, all pets should travel secured. Small ones (size and age) should be in a carrier buckled up with the belt and the bigger dogs should have special suspenders that can be buckled as well. FUn is fun, but accidents happen and you don't want to see your puppy flying through the front window or breaking something being tossed in the car. And third thing, especially with cats - they are sneaky little curious beasts and if they sneak under the drving pedals they can cause an accident or get injured. Drive safely and with reason when traveling with pets!!!

The odd puppy has been fed and is sound asleep. Maybe not enough Teats but plenty of baby formula to fill up fast by human in small animal bottle. Supplements for the others may also be required.

See those eyes? Well that shows that this dog will understand more than 400 words and more than enough actions from your movements. He will make feel important and won't miss a bet. His eyes says "I'm learning your language and understanding that you are an idiot but I love you anyway." This is the dog that I would buy and I don't buy dogs, I adopt the unwanted .

Sometimes you don't have a choice. Some mothers won't nurse after six weeks so you have to finish her job. Or mom got bit by a snake and is recovering at the vets. Puppy's must be fed .

I wanted an Aussie but an injured chihuahua came my way and it wasn't love at first sight until he looked into my eyes. My heart melted. Now I have a very loving ,selfish, playful, musical and needy Dude. He has a squeaky toy that he plays different sounds on it when I'm cooking.

They are too beautiful for their own good. They are really not the kind of dog you get if you think a garden and a long walk on the weekend is all a pooch needs. The want to WORK. And unlike Border Collies the large version comes with some protective instinct, so, yes, they are the kind of dog that could bite trespassers - which you need to know if you have kids and their friends running in and out, all day.

I love these dog posts! We need one for rescued dogs now....I have two- one pit bull mix I picked up off a highway ramp and the other Chihuahua mix was left in a foreclosure with only a bowl of water- both are amazingly loving and sweet- they help me daily through chronic pain- truly a case of who rescued who

I love the coat colouring... And the permanently wind swept look. There was an old nickelodeon show called A hundred deeds for Eddie McDowd which featured an aus. Shep. crossed with a German shep. From the day I saw that beautiful dog, I fell in love with him! The same dog even featured in the Maldonado Miracle... And looked just as sweet and stunning!

Why don't they call them American Shepherds? They are not related to Australian Red or Blue Heelers (Australian Cattle Dogs) or Australian Koolies or Kelpies .Their closest genetic relative is a Boarder Collie ,a British breed..We have our own great breeds of working dogs so it's really annoying that they are called Australian or Aussies when they are not.
