While we as humans continue to try (and fail) to live in peace and harmony, it is worth remembering that the world around us is a brutal, unforgiving place.
We have tamed our lives to such an extent that it is easy to turn a blind eye to the horrors of nature, sure, we as a species are far more damaging to our planet than all others put together, but let's not pretend that it's all sweetness and light out there!
This list, compiled by Bored Panda, is a reminder that we live in a scary world. Some of these things are simply wonders of nature that we may not like the look of, like spiders and centipedes. Some show the raw power of the elements, while others illustrate the horrific things that other creatures to do each other in order to survive. All of these things are awe-inspiring examples of nature, something not to be feared, but to be respected. I practically see a smile on this one's body--almost like the Cheshire Cat which seems perfect!

I love "pet" spiders, as I call them. They live in one corner of your apartment, feed on insects and sometimes climb down to investigate your belongings. If I happen to become roommates with one, I always make a point to leave some water for it to drink, if it needs it. My favourite spider of this kind used to live in my mom's bedroom. It only had 5 legs and we named it Oggie. The tiny spider loved to crawl on my mom's sketches(she's an engineer) and kept her company. I was 5 at the time and it was one of the first examples of invertebrates' personalities I was to see.
This is lovely! ❤ Btw, I have "pet" spiders too☺
Load More Replies...SpiderBRO! wow.. such a nice way to put it, instead of Spider-Man or something!
I have pet spiders too and they live in the corner of each room- I don't disturb them and they don't disturb me. We live in the countryside and horse flies are a massive nuisance but my lovely 'pets' keep my house from being over run. I hate that people scream and kill spiders when the little ones in the UK never hurt you. They are our friends not enemies. Flies are the danger and enemy!
Aw, come on! I only screamed once and fled out the front door. The spider was as large as my hand with a body the size of a pink eraser. I don't try to kill them but I can't sleep if one is in the room. They have a wicked sense of humor and run across my face. At least the Palmettos snuggle within the curved fingers of my hand when I am sleeping. Neither bite, but I always wake up terrified.
Load More Replies...I had a spider lived in the greenhouse/conservatory ouside the back door - it was quite big and I would put dead flies on its web every day - it got bigger and fatter and then gave birth. The thousands of microscopic spiderlings creeped me out
Spiders are fully capable of catching their own food and should be let to do so. Like dogs defend us and cats catch mice, spiders help us out with small unwelcome insects like mosquitoes. Well, when their kids show up are a completely another story...😳
Load More Replies...aw like the kitchen spider I had a few summers ago when we had a cat, his food was a fly magnet and despite our best efforts some flies still managed to find there way in. Queue the arrival of kitchen spider and our fly problem was halved. Although kitchen spider was a messy eater and I spent a lot of time having to wipe the door frame under where he lived.
When I was a kid I used to catch insects to feed the spiders in some of our corners. This fella though needs no help at all!
I have a spider who hangs out in my shower right over my head - but only when I'm showering. Any other time if I go to see what he's up to I can't find him. But often (not always) when I'm showering he's right there. His name is Apollo.
How about this cutie? https://me.me/i/please-love-me-i-bringed-you-a-fly-spider-bro-19606667

It's creepy but probably not dangerous unless you somehow get tangled in it and can't get to the surface.

This Frog Was Found All Dried Up And Withered Outside The Store In The Morning... The Store Manager Said, "Let's Try Splashing Some Water On It," And Holy Sh*t It Came Back To Life
Something similar happened to me once, but well, the other way round. I was on a sea holiday and came upon a large blue dragonfly, drowned in the sea. Now, I was saddened for the poor thing, but also ecstatic, for I have a collection of pinned insects, all of which were found dead, for I just can't bring myself to kill alive ones for the purpose. I carried it around in my palm, wondering where exactly was I to put it, for I didn't have any other dragonflies and the thing was huge. Suddenly, it moved! A second later, again! It became progressively more active, until it could stand on its legs and turn his head around in curiosity! I separated its wings carefully(they stuck to each other from the salty water) and it shook itself a little. I left it cleaning itself on an oak on a quiet path and I do hope it recovered completely. :)
It repaid you by eating lots of mosquitoes. That is what dragonflies do. Good on you!

My Gecko Ate His Tail
“Are you tured of your hand? Just eat it and grow a new one”
Load More Replies...That gecko was actually well-fed - his tail stump is quite fat. I suspect that he just had a bit of an oopsie - someone scared him or something, and he shed his tail. He probably calmed down soon after and saw the wiggling morsel, and thought that it was time for dinner...
It's partially a defense mechanism, so as not to draw predators. Insectivores, like the Phelsuma pictured, have a quick feeding response towards movement: detatched tails thrash around.
The tail would still be able to wriggle round after detaching, probably thought it was a juicy worm. I

Load More Replies...A few commenters have asked - yes, it's Australian; it's a huntsman spider. Generally harmless and quiet, but occasionally they can have a real attitude. I once waled into a roon to see one on the oposite wall about 5 metres away, and the beastie reared up and waved its legs at me whichever direction I walked. And I once was bitten under the armpit by one that had crawled under my sheets - stung like a wasp and itched for two weeks, with the blood vessels in the area looking dark and swollen. I did put the poor thing outside though - I felt sorry for it being pressed against me...
Oh, and to scare the pants off all the arachnophobes - these things run like the blazes. The beastie in the photo could probably go from ceiling to floor in less than a couple of seconds if it had a mind to...
Load More Replies...That is hunsman spider. They like wooded stuff and eat cockroaches and crickets. Their bite is painful but in most cases not life threatening - it just swells locally and it's gone in a few days.

Acid Spitting Ants
The real question is who the f*** decide to put these ants on is hand and tingle them until they spit acid on his skin?
Load More Replies...It's formic acid, which is similar to vinegar. It's the chemical that gives ants their stinky smell when they're crushed.
I always wondered what that smell was. Most people I know can't smell ants but I can. I once had ants in my ice cream and didn't realise it. I will never forget the taste or the smell. Fire ants, I hate. Their bite is quite bad. I got bitten by some in Queensland when I was very little. Not fun. Not deadly, but I don't like pain.

This is, in fact, how most known specimens came to be collected.[6][7] In 2007, a black swallower measuring 19 cm (7.5 in) long was found dead off Grand Cayman. Its stomach contained a snake mackerel (Gempylus serpens) 86 cm (34 in) long, or four and a half times its own length"

Given the snake head went missing, it probably ate the scolopendra first, then it began to ate the snake from inside, but was already too injured or poisoned to survive, however deadly injured the snake too.. am I wrong ?
the snake's head is not missing. the snake's head is upper right, follow the legs from left to right (where the multiple leaves are) & where they end, the snake starts. took me a minute to find it too.

Oregon Fires Next To A Golf Course
This reminds me of that: "A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, “What’s with those guys? We must have been waiting for 15 minutes!” The doctor chimed in, “I don’t know, but I’ve never seen such inept golf!” The priest said, “Here comes the green-keeper. Let’s have a word with him.” He said, “Hello, George. What’s wrong with that group ahead of us? They’re rather slow, aren’t they?” The green-keeper replied, “Oh, yes. That’s a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime.” The group fell silent for a moment. The priest said, “That’s so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight.” The doctor said, “Good idea. I’m going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there’s anything she can do for them.” The engineer said, “Why can’t they play at night?”"
Hey there is a huge fire roaming around! What should we do? Evacuat? No, let's play golf!
It can take a long time to get the perfect Tee Time...
Load More Replies...It's hard to tell just how far away that really is, but it looks like it could be on them in moments if the winds shift that way.
Having been close to fires myself, they can turn in seconds, and there'd be no way to escape. This is a blatant disregard of their lives, and ignorance of nature.
Load More Replies...It's actually not as close to them as it seems. This was in the gorge in Oregon and there is a huge gorge/river seperating Oregon and Washington state (they are in WA, the fires were in OR, I believe)
A teenager was lighting off fireworks and set a huge section of the gorge forests on fire. He has since been charged millions of dollars and will have to pay back the government for the rest of his life. He'll never get a paycheck. The fires burned for weeks and weeks destroying miles of forest and homes.
Not true Catlin. He only has to make reasonable payments for 10 years and then if he was compliant they will suspend the rest of the payments.

My Inlaws Are In A Bit Of A Froggy Situation Right Now
As unfortunate as this situation had to be for whoever's pool this was, I think this is kinda cute. Baby froggies!
They remind of those tiny fluffy black creatures of Miyazaki. But still a big nope.
G'day Mates, Let's Be Friendssss!
DEAR GOD . . . I'm pretty sure that thing could open the door by itself!
Ugh! Y'all I normally don't have a thing against spiders, but y'all are giving me arachnophobia
A Lizard On Its Final Journey
Something Crawled Through The Keyhole And Made A Hive In The Garage Door Handle

These Ants Forming A Question Mark
Thousands Of Mosquitos Outside Of My Window At Work
Bleeding Tree
This reminds me of these hardcore Russian folktales where after the hero kills three dragons, their wives and mother declare revenge. One of the wives turns herself into an apple tree so that she can kill the hero and his companions when they try to eat from the tree. The hero already knows this in advance and cuts the tree to pieces before his companions can eat from it. Oh yeah, and human blood gushes out while he does it!
So My Friend Got Something In His Eye While We Were Walking Home
and you took a picture instead of getting it out. wow! we r intelligent beings.
Yes, he took a picture and hopefully let a health professional remove the glass, because otherwise he would have definitely blinded his friend... Indeed, an intelligent being in this case ;)

This Sick Washed Up Gar Skeleton I Found
You kept it, didn't you? No, wait, there are probably laws for it, right? Gars are rare, after all. Pity, it's a nice skeleton for studies.
not sure where you live, but they are not rare in Florida
Load More Replies...I actually laughed waaaaay too hard at this!
Load More Replies...If you want one, come to the US. Gars are plentiful here in most southern lakes. I have personally seem 8 foot long alligator gars caught in a lake in Texas. I think the record at Lake Texoma is 225 pounds.
Millions Of Fire Ants Floating In Flooding From Harvey
Pour Gasoline and light them on fire, they are good for nothing. They destroy crops and eat and living creature they can get their hands on!
Did you know red ant venom is stronger than what it usually is while they’re in raft form?
Imagine falling into that...I guess you wouldn't do much thinking. You'd probably be dead.

Fireants Create A Floating Island Of Themselves To Ride Out The Houston Flooding
A lot of them probably died supporting the underwater structure in order to save the bulk of the colony. I wonder if humans would act as selflessly as these ants if came to it.
Load More Replies...They're Hydrophobic, that means they actually repel 100% of water, so the ones on the bottom are no worse off than the ones on the top ^^

Ben Smith: so I supose each time a human dies you're as heartless, right? If not, google humans, see what they actually do. Way less than poor coyotes. A*****e.
