Context is everything. Without it, some seemingly innocent images might not even make you do a double-take. But when you know more about what’s pictured, your reaction can be completely different. Raw. Visceral. Full of fear. On the other hand, some photos ooze evil and immediately turn on our fight or flight (or freeze or fawn) response.
Today, we’re featuring some of the creepiest photos ever taken, as shared on the immensely popular @fasc1nate account on X, formerly Twitter. Scroll down to take a peek at them, and be sure to share your thoughts on the photos in the comments at the bottom of this post.

The Haunting Look Of An 18-Year-Old Russian Girl After Being Liberated From Dachau, April 29, 1945
I visited Dachau in 1989 and it was one of the most chilling experiences of my entire life. And being in the US right now as a gay man, I know this is what the GOP will do to me given the chance. Except they won't, because I'm also a combat vet and I'd died in a fight before they'd put me in a concentration camp.
Too late... :( All over the world, on almost every continent, atrocities continue.

When we lived in Singapore in the 60s, our school bus would go past Changi Jail, where these poor guys were held prisoner. It would always cause us to go very quiet. We were told about the atrocities and the awful ways in which they were treated. I was seven years old and it had a huge effect on me.
I worked with a guy in the 70's who had been a Japanese prisoner of war, needless to say he didn't talk about it.
Similar to my music teacher at school. He had a moustache and had been in the war. so the kids nicknamed him Hitler. but the moustache was to hide his prisoner number which the Japanese had tattooed above his top lip

I've seen this picture several times and it always said Australians
Australians, British... It doesn't really matter. The things they underwent... I know the Japanese Imperial Army didn't view anyone other than them as truly "human". I am just glad things have changed.
Load More Replies...My Father was in the British Artillery in WW2 and ended up in Changi with Australians until the end of the war. He hated the japanese with a passion but, to his credit, never tried to instill that hatred into his children. I don't think he ever forgave what they did to him and his mates but in later life he accepted that modern Japan had moved on from that and he did too. More remarkable was the fact that, from looking like the guys in that picture he came home to a wife and two kids, found work as soon as he was able to and I was born in 1947 so he didn't waste any time.
In 1907, A British Sailor Is Seen Unshackling An Enslaved Man Who Had Been Chained For Three Years
Thank you, unknown British sailor, for your act of humanity and kindness.

Slavery still exists legally now (looking at you, Qatar, China and the USA amongst others).

I mean, yeah, it's sad that this man was even chained in the first place, but sadly that's reality, and here they're showing a sympathetic person helping someone in need, and that's not creepy at all.
It's only heartwarming if you think the sailor is unchaining him. Maybe he's doing the opposite.

All 7 northern States abolished slavery between 1776 and 1778, during the American revolution, and the first places in the world to do so, the UK didn't abolish slavery till 1834, largely as a response to people demanding that the UK follow suit to what was going on in the US. The abolitionist movement was a huge reason the revolution began

Survivors From The 87th Floor Of The World Trade Center (North Tower) Wandering In The Dust After The Collapse Of The South Tower – New York City, September 11, 2001
That dust is still causing cancer. And I will never forgive, forget or pass an opportunity to remind folks that Republicans and Republicans only held up first responder healthcare funding. Firefighters died medically bankrupt because Republicans turned it into a political football for years. Years. If there is an objective good, you will find a christian conservative legislator in opposition. And while I should be used to it, this one still makes my blood boil.

The problem is that the peoples then were mostly illiterate and were victims of the nationalistic propaganda, with the known results. And still worst is the same peoples don't read History and don't learn the lessons of the past.

Research shows that creepy things tend to be ambiguously threatening. A 2015 study into the psychological nature of creepiness found that it might arise in the gray area where things might or might not be dangerous.
Many people find things like mannequins, dolls, and clowns to be particularly creepy. They feel that these (objectively innocent) things have an underlying current of malevolence.

A Pod That Allows A User To Take Their Own Life. At The Push Of A Button, The Pod Would Fill With Nitrogen Gas, Rapidly Lowering Oxygen Levels
Yes, please, thank you. At least for those who have terminal illnesses.
We all have our pets humanely put down when they have no quality of life left. Why should it be wrong for humans to make those choices for themselves?
Load More Replies...I have a degenerative neuromuscular disease. I have looked into the Sarco pod as well as places like Dignitas. I don't want to be trapped in a bed on a feeding tube, choking on my own saliva. If I live to that stage, it should be my choice. This picture isn't creepy, it's dignity.
Religion is the only thing stopping this from being widespread. This options should be available within a 50 mile radius to every human on earth. One should not have to travel thousands of miles to make a decision about their own body. People should be allowed to die with dignity, not suffer while they whither away.
This pod has not been used yet, even in countries where euthanasia is legal. There are still controversies about how painless it would really be and whether people would actually want to pass away in a capsule, separated from their loved ones.
I would be convinced that I would be choking to death as I died. Sounds cruel to me.
Load More Replies...We do. But I find the comparison problematic. I may make this decision for a cat but I would not want to make it for another human being. And I want to have the right to choose but I don't want anyone to decide for me.
Load More Replies...Idiots "think" legalized euthanasia is about "killing granny for the inheritance", as if people are being forced into it. Yes please. I think counselling before hand might be a good idea to check no one feels coerced, but this needs to be an available option. No one should have to live out their last months or years in pain, dependency and indignity. We would have mercy on an animal, we should have the same mercy for human beings.

People always underestimate how much water weighs/what force and momentum it has-thats why people get swept away all the time, when they only get knocked off their feet in a relatively shallow river.
In my younger days I use to surf. About the biggest waves I've ever surfed were about 15-20ft waves. Let me tell you something, when one of those waves breaks on top of you, and you get held under the water from sheer size and weight of that wave, you learn a new respect for the ocean.

Disgustingly, the bones of the feet were broken and horrible sores were often formed in the folds of the feet. It was a lifetime of torture.
The saddest part is, after the cultural revolution women with bound feet were treated shamefully. They had no choice, it was done to them, and it physically crippled them. Then when it was no longer nationally approved they were forced to hobble along on ruined feet and shamed for it.
This trend continued for over a millennium. Up to 10% of girls treated in this way died.

The Last Photo Before The Dyatlov Pass Incident
From Wiki: The Dyatlov Pass incident is an event in which nine Soviet hikers died in the northern Ural Mountains between February 1 and 2, 1959, under uncertain circumstances. The experienced trekking group from the Ural Polytechnical Institute, led by Igor Dyatlov, had established a camp on the eastern slopes of Kholat Syakhl in the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union. Overnight, something caused them to cut their way out of their tent and flee the campsite while inadequately dressed for the heavy snowfall and subzero temperatures.
I read a great book about this! The author believed that high winds through a mountain pass created sonic waves that drove everyone out of their minds. His evidence was compelling.
Was the book "Dead Mountain" by chance? If so, I read that as well and it was wonderful. I've heard that the authors theory has been debunked but I haven't found much information unfortunately.

That is horrific. They’re in the worst pain imaginable and painkillers won’t work. Radiation is terrifying. I’ve actually been to Chernobyl and, while this is obvious, I found it chilling that the most irradiated parts of the exclusion zone don’t feel any different than anywhere else on earth. What happened to the tiger? I'd hate to know it was killed because a stupid human acted stupidly.
He died of natural causes a few years ago at the age of 20. The forest department are the only people who can legally kill maneating tigers in India and they rarely do that. Besides, they have to prove that the tiger attacked the victim without apparent provocation with the intent of consuming them before they can kill it. A Doll With Two Faces
My sister once had such a doll. It even had four faces, made of porcelain, with a cap to leave one face free and cover the others. I had a beautiful model airplane on my shelf that I had spent months putting together. My sister and I got into a fight - we were 11 and 13 or something - and I smashed that doll's head in, when my sister was out that night. When I came home from school the next day, the plane was sitting on the shelf exactly as it always was, except my sister had also completely crushed it. So, there's that.
I have seen and held these types of dolls. They are not inherently creepy at all. Some were not the most attractive, but none of them creeped me out.
Ohhh these are interesting dolls :] there's some with three (and possibly four?) faces as well. A lot go for a pretty penny though according to some doll collectors I follow
We had these as children, with 3 faces that you could turn to alternate which was showing out the front of the hooded bonnet. And I am in my 50s.
I had one of these dolls. They either had bonnets or a thick top notch of hair to cover the face(s). They didn't seem creepy. Mine had a happy face and a crying face.

Trapper boys were usually the youngest of the young. Their job was to open and close the heavy wooden doors that blocked the gangways and tunnels in the mine. When closed, the doors directed airflow, allowing fresh air to be forced into the tunnels where men were working. The flow of air also pushed out dangerous gases, preventing explosions."

Load More Replies...I feel sorry for the young Dahmer. Obviously once he started killing I have no sympathy for him but at this time he was constantly drunk in order to fit in at school. He was bullied all the time and his home life was worse. He was also gay in a time were it was not accepted at all and he never really fit in anywhere. He didn't really get a good start in life at all but none of that can justify what he did later on. People have had worse starts and turned out to become amazing adults
He was always drunk; he did it to be accepted by others since everyone avoided him. Only when he was drunk did he become a clown, and that’s when others accepted him. Far be it from me to defend him, but Dahmer was someone who could have been saved. Do you think the teachers didn’t notice he was always drunk?
The worst part of his story is about the two cops who saw him chasing a naked handcuffed teenager and let him go as he stated it was just a lovers discussion. The two cops not only weren’t charged but one even got promoted. The kid was one of his victims as well as his brother I believe. Justice was served in jail eventually, I hope after a long switching him as new girlfriend among inmates.

A Mickey Mouse Gas Mask For Children During Ww2, 1942
The intent of making masks like this was to make them look less frightening to wear to children. By putting the familiar face of Mickey on it, children wore them more willingly, which could save their lives. It might look disturbing to us now, but I think even we can agree the adult gas mask style looks even more terrifying.

Henri Paul was not drunk. Photos taken of him shortly before he got in the car to drive Princess Diana and Dodi show him in a very difficult-to-hold position tying his shoelaces and holding that position very steadily which he could not have done if he'd been drunk. The photographers were nowhere near the car. It was clipped by a white Fiat which sent it into the pillar it hit. The photo shown below was taken by an overhead automatic camera fastened at the top of the underpass right at its entrance. These facts are just for starters. Diana wasn't wrong 2 years before her death when she wrote in her diary she had a feeling she was going to be murdered by someone in the Royal Family and it would be in a car accident. A Photo Of Clowns Found At An Abandoned Old Folks Home
Clowns, in the entertainment industry, didn't become synonymous with horror until after the serial killer John Wayne Gacy, and after Stephen King released IT. After kids started growing up watching Pennywise in the miniseries, that's when larger groups started fearing clowns.
Killer klownz from outer space came out first in 1988, and what i saw first.. it went to HBO fairly quickly and what scared most of my friends. I didnt like clowns much before that, didnt want to go near them afterwards. They"re still creepy.

It wasn't uncommon for small children to be apprehensive initially, but she would ignore them, and pretty soon they were right up front with the other ones.
Just as long as she understands to not try interaction beyond an introduction and the person declined. I've had a clown keep coming back to me (I couldn't leave due to position in the crowd) and pushing me for interaction. It was like he saw my fear and decided to cure me or I just didn't want to involved in the show b/c I was too stuck-up. Please don't make my husband punch you if I say 'no' multiple times or you touch me.

Police Excavate The Backyard Of Gary Ridgeway
"Gary Leon Ridgway (born February 18, 1949) is an American serial killer known as the Green River Killer. He was initially convicted of 48 separate murders committed between the early 1980s and late 1990s. As part of his plea bargain, another conviction was added, bringing the total number of convictions to 49, making him the second-most prolific serial killer in United States history according to confirmed murders."
Thanks for all this extra info, Lakota. I'm not from US so these names don't mean much to me without your context.
Load More Replies...Gary was convicted of 49 murders but many people suspect he could've killed 90. He used to kill sex workers because he thought that no one would care so he could kill as many as he liked. It's really interesting how conflicting his mind was because he killed sex workers out of hatred for them and would dump them like trash but he also was addicted to prostitutes himself and would use them even while married. He would kill them and then come back to have sex with their decomposing bodies 'until the flies came' burying them in groups so they were easier to find. He would drive out to them while his son was asleep in the car. His first wife told of how he used to take her to the woods and disappear while she was looking for him he would creep up and grab her.

I wouldn't call this empirical data, exactly. This is a shining example of propaganda at its laziest. I'm not saying "no one ever found a smidge of relief" from a lobotomy, but there is a very tall stack of reasons why it's a crime to perform one now.
It was a procedure that would sever part of the frontal lobe. In theory, it was meant to help cure mental illnesses and calm patients down, but in practice many people were left unable to function, due to a "cure" that was more or less random destruction of brain tissue.

This is what that lucky cop found in his car the first time he got arrested, since this lot was taken to be "burglary tools". It was the beginning of the end for that bastard.
Glad…. He had to use glad….. on the plus side this is probably the best product review ever!
Budd Dwyer Moments Before He Took His Own Life On Live Televison
He was convicted of bribery shortly before he committed suicide.
And then he was found not guilty after his death. So sad
Load More Replies...Contrary to what folks believe, "Hey man, Nice Shot" by Filter was inspired by Budd Dwyer and not Kurt Cobain!
Who thought it was about Cobain? It's common knowledge that it was about Dwyer.
Load More Replies...I saw it too. I don't remember when or where but back in the old days, videos like that was easily accessed.
Load More Replies...Are there really people who make the “Nice shot” joke? It's so sad 😢 Please don't do this. Imagine the distress of this poor man and his family.
I've seen the clip. Everyone started panicking when they saw the gun, naturally, and this is him trying to reassure them that he's not going to hurt them before giving up and doing the deed.
The Last Photo Taken By Daylenn Pua Before He Disappeared

I've seen a better version of this picture and it's NOT a person. The guy decided to hike up a steep trail that was closed off to the public because it was so dangerous. He most likely fell and ended up somewhere his body couldn't be seen.
C'est la 1ere fois que je vois distinctement "la personne" sur cette photo. Alors je sais pas quoi penser

He served under Putin. I'm not sure how "tragic" this assassination really was, if you get my meaning - other than the underlying tragic nature of ANY human being murdering another, no matter how evil the victim may be.
Doctor Anthony Fauci served under Trump. That doesn't make him a MAGA by any means.

This is just Raymond Robinson, a man who was tragically disfigured in an electrical accident as a child. He was not creepy. He is not someone to be feared, loathed, or hated. Simply a victim of a tragic accident.
I read somewhere that he knew he scared children, so he tried to go out after dark when kids were usually in their homes.
Load More Replies...From Wiki: Raymond Theodore Robinson (October 29, 1910 – June 11, 1985) was a disfigured American man whose years of nighttime walks made him into a figure of urban legend in western Pennsylvania. Robinson was so severely injured in a childhood electrical accident that he could not go out in public without fear of causing a panic, so he went for long walks at night.
Apparently he tried to get to a birds nest and came too close to a power line causing an electrical ark

Very special thanks to LakotaWolf and others who made this list 100x more informative than BoredPanda could be bothered to do :)

We just hear less about it because we directly benefit from it and don't want to give up that luxury. No one's computer memes are being powered by the coal those kids mined a hundred years ago, so we have the privilege of tsk-tsking it from the comfort of the future. 100 years from now our great grandkids will be looking at Chinese prison camps, migrant field slaves, and trafficked child labor of today with the same audacity. We spoiled elite just choose to ignore it because it works for us right now.
Thank you to @LakotaWolf (she/her) for putting info under the photos!
"Creepiest Photos" was disrespectful to people in most of these pictures. A holocaust survivor is not creepy.
I totally agree with your point Richard Rice. "Unpleasant" to our senses perhaps fits most of these, not "Creepy".
