Context is everything. Without it, some seemingly innocent images might not even make you do a double-take. But when you know more about what’s pictured, your reaction can be completely different. Raw. Visceral. Full of fear. On the other hand, some photos ooze evil and immediately turn on our fight or flight (or freeze or fawn) response.
Today, we’re featuring some of the creepiest photos ever taken, as shared on the immensely popular @fasc1nate account on X, formerly Twitter. Scroll down to take a peek at them, and be sure to share your thoughts on the photos in the comments at the bottom of this post.

I visited Dachau in 1989 and it was one of the most chilling experiences of my entire life. And being in the US right now as a gay man, I know this is what the GOP will do to me given the chance. Except they won't, because I'm also a combat vet and I'd died in a fight before they'd put me in a concentration camp.

When we lived in Singapore in the 60s, our school bus would go past Changi Jail, where these poor guys were held prisoner. It would always cause us to go very quiet. We were told about the atrocities and the awful ways in which they were treated. I was seven years old and it had a huge effect on me.

Similar to my music teacher at school. He had a moustache and had been in the war. so the kids nicknamed him Hitler. but the moustache was to hide his prisoner number which the Japanese had tattooed above his top lip

Australians, British... It doesn't really matter. The things they underwent... I know the Japanese Imperial Army didn't view anyone other than them as truly "human". I am just glad things have changed.

My Father was in the British Artillery in WW2 and ended up in Changi with Australians until the end of the war. He hated the japanese with a passion but, to his credit, never tried to instill that hatred into his children. I don't think he ever forgave what they did to him and his mates but in later life he accepted that modern Japan had moved on from that and he did too. More remarkable was the fact that, from looking like the guys in that picture he came home to a wife and two kids, found work as soon as he was able to and I was born in 1947 so he didn't waste any time.

Incorrect caption, the British intercepted a slave ship, as slavery still legally existed in many parts of the world as late as 1963 (looking at you Saudis). The rescued and freed him. However we have no clue how long he was a slave, or how long he had been shackled, that is extra details someone invented.

I don't know if I would call this photo creepy, because it's honestly pretty heartwarming. I mean, yeah, it's sad that this man was even chained in the first place, but sadly that's reality, and here they're showing a sympathetic person helping someone in need, and that's not creepy at all.

All 7 northern States abolished slavery between 1776 and 1778, during the American revolution, and the first places in the world to do so, the UK didn't abolish slavery till 1834, largely as a response to people demanding that the UK follow suit to what was going on in the US. The abolitionist movement was a huge reason the revolution began

The BBC notes that even some objectively ordinary things (e.g., dolls, clowns, mannequins) can have creepy connotations

According to Dr. Coltan Scrivner, a behavioral scientist and horror expert, the feeling of creepiness is something that almost anybody can resonate with. “If you say you’re creeped out, most people will know exactly what you mean.” It’s incredibly relatable.

That dust is still causing cancer. And I will never forgive, forget or pass an opportunity to remind folks that Republicans and Republicans only held up first responder healthcare funding. Firefighters died medically bankrupt because Republicans turned it into a political football for years. Years. If there is an objective good, you will find a christian conservative legislator in opposition. And while I should be used to it, this one still makes my blood boil.

More 9/11 survivors and first responders have died of cancers related to 9/11 dust than died on the day. Let that sink in. There's gonna have to be another memorial built- they're no less victims than those from the day itself.

It's surreal to me that this happened 23 years ago. I remember exactly where I was when the news went around the world. I flew to New York in October 01 to visit friends and it was like a ghost town. The enormous red tarps covering the ruins of WTC were scary. The gaping hole in the Pentagon was also still there.

Governments make these decisions and take these actions on the backs of their innocent people. It wasn't Japans citizens were victims of their government's atrocities and the unnecessary horrific fallout caused by our (the US) government. The actions of a government DOES NOT represent the true beliefs of their people. I feel like it's imperative to remember this.

IMO, the US didn't drop the bombs to end the war (because that was a foregone conclusion). They did it because the Cold War was already starting and US wanted to show USSR as a cautionary measure. And Japan hadn't technically surrendered and because of racism and revenge and geographically distant.

Religion is the only thing stopping this from being widespread. This options should be available within a 50 mile radius to every human on earth. One should not have to travel thousands of miles to make a decision about their own body. People should be allowed to die with dignity, not suffer while they whither away.

We do. But I find the comparison problematic. I may make this decision for a cat but I would not want to make it for another human being. And I want to have the right to choose but I don't want anyone to decide for me.

Idiots "think" legalized euthanasia is about "killing granny for the inheritance", as if people are being forced into it. People who apply are screened and scrutinized to prevent it. Nearly all who choose it do so because they know their lives will never get better, only gradually worse, and choose not to suffer.

Yes please. I think counselling before hand might be a good idea to check no one feels coerced, but this needs to be an available option. No one should have to live out their last months or years in pain, dependency and indignity. We would have mercy on an animal, we should have the same mercy for human beings.

My thoughts whenever I see pictures or video of that... Remember the time when my stepdad took us to a neighbor living on the beach who threw a tsunami watch party when our town received a warning. Luckily it turned out to be a big fat nothing burger. But I still think of the "what ifs" and wonder how any parent would put their kids in danger like that.

In my younger days I use to surf. About the biggest waves I've ever surfed were about 15-20ft waves. Let me tell you something, when one of those waves breaks on top of you, and you get held under the water from sheer size and weight of that wave, you learn a new respect for the ocean.

A Finnish officer died there among other victims of the disaster. At the time I was serving in the Finnish Navy and our NCO course took part to his funeral, we were acting as a honour guard helding the flowers when the coffin was taken out from the chapel. This happened in April (obviously it was a long time after the Tsunami) and it was a bright but cold spring morning: the trees around the drill field were covered with icy frost although the snow covering the ground had already melted. I remember how we marched to the chapel and nothing but our steps and the commands of the corporals could be heard. Otherwise the base was silent and it all felt pretty eerie.

Dr. Scrivener told BBC Bitesize that in real life, clowns paint on smiles, but on TV, dangerous clowns often paint on frowns. “This sends mixed ideas about whether they’re actually safe,” the scientist explained.

Meanwhile, clowns, dolls, and mannequins can scare some folks because of the uncanny valley phenomenon. In short, it’s related to how people feel uncomfortable when they see something that looks almost like a human being… but not quite.

Read the Binding Chair novel by Katherine Harrison, the feet were mutilated to stop the ladies running away from their abusive husbands and as a tool of s*xual gratification for the men. Disgustingly, the bones of the feet were broken and horrible sores were often formed in the folds of the feet. It was a lifetime of torture.

The saddest part is, after the cultural revolution women with bound feet were treated shamefully. They had no choice, it was done to them, and it physically crippled them. Then when it was no longer nationally approved they were forced to hobble along on ruined feet and shamed for it.

It’s not just people, creatures, and things that can scare us. Landscapes, like lonely forest roads, can unsettle us as well. “Humans are social creatures so if you’re out by yourself and you see no one is there, it’s a great question to ask, ‘Why is nobody else here? Is there something wrong with this place? Is it dangerous?’” Dr. Scrivner said.

From Wiki: The Dyatlov Pass incident is an event in which nine Soviet hikers died in the northern Ural Mountains between February 1 and 2, 1959, under uncertain circumstances. The experienced trekking group from the Ural Polytechnical Institute, led by Igor Dyatlov, had established a camp on the eastern slopes of Kholat Syakhl in the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union. Overnight, something caused them to cut their way out of their tent and flee the campsite while inadequately dressed for the heavy snowfall and subzero temperatures.

Music, sounds, and silence can have a similar effect. However, context is vital here. “When a door creaks open that’s only creepy when you’re by yourself. It signals that something or someone may be pushing it slowly,” the scientist pointed out.

Alternatively, in a house full of people you know, a poorly-oiled door would be a minor annoyance at worst. Why? Because you feel safe and at ease.

The most horrific part for me is knowing that the cells and organs are breaking down, including the cardio-vascular system. It means you can't give them painkillers. The only compassion is euthanasia.

That is horrific. They’re in the worst pain imaginable and painkillers won’t work. Radiation is terrifying. I’ve actually been to Chernobyl and, while this is obvious, I found it chilling that the most irradiated parts of the exclusion zone don’t feel any different than anywhere else on earth. Like you can’t feel radiation at all, you’d never know if you were being exposed to it, it’s like anywhere else on earth until the symptoms start. Radiation is silent but terrifyingly deadly.

Hisashi Ouchi, who suffered horrible radiation burns after an incident at a nuclear power plant, was kept alive for 83 days just so doctors could study the effects of radiation on the body. I wouldn't wish that much suffering on my worst enemy.

I highly recommend the book Chernobyl Prayer by Svetlana Alexievich. The first part is about a young woman and her husband - the husband worked as firefighter on the accident site and he and his workmates got deadly doses of radiation. It is one of the most touching and scariest stories I've ever read - and is true from the start to the finish.

I just recommended "Voices from Chernobyl" by Svetlana Alexievich that has the same story you're talking about. I wanted to cry, especially about what happened to her husband and the baby she was carrying at the time. What happened to her Husband, Firefighters and Liquidators that worked on the site right after the meltdown is absolutely terrifying, not too mention the long-term side effects for EVERYONE that was exposed after the accident.

He died of natural causes a few years ago at the age of 20. The forest department are the only people who can legally kill maneating tigers in India and they rarely do that. Besides, they have to prove that the tiger attacked the victim without apparent provocation with the intent of consuming them before they can kill it. Edit: I checked some old news articles and found that he was not classified as a Maneater as he did not eat any part of Maqsood

Whether or not zoos take good care of the animals, I don't understand why people think they need to cage up animals for others to stare at. I understand wanting people to get an in-person education, but can't they do like documentaries and stuff? Animals are not decorations. These are wild animals, not meant to be kept in captivity.

Worst thing is the mayority of those men never got any treatment. It was not known. Many were shot as cowards. It was called "shellshock" because doctors believed it to be an accoustic effect on the brain for the constant shelling. That poor man is not grinning. The muscles on his face have tighten because of stress.

There is a very moving memorial at Alrewas National Memorial Arboretum called "Shot at Dawn". I don't know anyone of the poor people who were shot at dawn but when we visited, mainly to lay a wreath for my wife's brother, I was compelled to visit the memorial. My Mum, (now 87), couldn't understand why I wanted to visit it. Until she saw it. It's a series of posts with the names of those who were shot for "cowardice", probably shell-shocked, including a civilian. None of us could speak.

My dad's best friend was a tunnel rat in Vietnam. He can't be in small spaces to the point where he'll panic if the door is shut to a bathroom.

My sister once had such a doll. It even had four faces, made of porcelain, with a cap to leave one face free and cover the others. I had a beautiful model airplane on my shelf that I had spent months putting together. My sister and I got into a fight - we were 11 and 13 or something - and I smashed that doll's head in, when my sister was out that night. When I came home from school the next day, the plane was sitting on the shelf exactly as it always was, except my sister had also completely crushed it. So, there's that.

I had one of these dolls. They either had bonnets or a thick top notch of hair to cover the face(s). They didn't seem creepy. Mine had a happy face and a crying face.

In 2020, 293 million head of cattle were slaughtered for meat, the U.S accounted for 36.2 million of them. That picture showcases a tiny fraction of either of those numbers. Globally, 1.2 Trillion animals are slaughtered each and every year. The only thing that's changed, is the fact that the majority of people no longer have to get their hands dirty.

no, parasitic twin is a very specific condition where the partially formed body is attached and draws nutrients but is not a separate entity. If it had a developed nervous system to the point it was sentient it would be called a conjoined twin.

I truly believe that if he had not began taunting law enforcement years later, he could have gotten away with everything. He was living a normal life(Park Ranger job, church deacon, family, etc). The case was so cold that it wasn't expected to ever be solved, but his arrogance and need for attention got the best of him.

From Google: They were known as the Wyoming State Penitentiary All Stars (aka The Death Row All Stars) & played their first game in July 1911. The team included 3 rapist, a forger, 5 thieves & 3 murderers. Joseph Seng, who had murdered his lover's husband, was the only member executed, in May 1912

I wasn't familiar with the term. Googled. "Many pre-adolescent boys were required to garner employment in underground mines to supplement the family coffers. Trapper boys were usually the youngest of the young. Their job was to open and close the heavy wooden doors that blocked the gangways and tunnels in the mine. When closed, the doors directed airflow, allowing fresh air to be forced into the tunnels where men were working. The flow of air also pushed out dangerous gases, preventing explosions."

I had to look up the meaning of Trapper Boy: "Their job was simple: to open and close the wooden doors (trap doors) that allowed fresh air to flow through the mine. They would usually sit in total darkness for up to twelve hours at a time, waiting to let the coal tub through the door."

I feel sorry for the young Dahmer. Obviously once he started killing I have no sympathy for him but at this time he was constantly drunk in order to fit in at school. He was bullied all the time and his home life was worse. He was also gay in a time were it was not accepted at all and he never really fit in anywhere. He didn't really get a good start in life at all but none of that can justify what he did later on. People have had worse starts and turned out to become amazing adults

He was always drunk; he did it to be accepted by others since everyone avoided him. Only when he was drunk did he become a clown, and that’s when others accepted him. Far be it from me to defend him, but Dahmer was someone who could have been saved. Do you think the teachers didn’t notice he was always drunk?

The worst part of his story is about the two cops who saw him chasing a naked handcuffed teenager and let him go as he stated it was just a lovers discussion. The two cops not only weren’t charged but one even got promoted. The kid was one of his victims as well as his brother I believe. Justice was served in jail eventually, I hope after a long switching him as new girlfriend among inmates.

The intent of making masks like this was to make them look less frightening to wear to children. By putting the familiar face of Mickey on it, children wore them more willingly, which could save their lives. It might look disturbing to us now, but I think even we can agree the adult gas mask style looks even more terrifying.

"Richard Ramirez was an American serial killer and sex offender whose killing spree occurred in Greater Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area in the state of California. From April 1984 to August 1985, Ramirez murdered at least fourteen people during various break-ins, with his crimes usually taking place in the afternoon, leading to him being dubbed the Night Stalker, the Walk-In Killer, and the Valley Intruder. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 1989 and died while awaiting execution in 2013."

We had a kid in one of our schools a few years ago with an angelic face and curly hair who gave that exact same expression any time he was being talked to after bullying other kids or breaking stuff (which was often). I always wondered what would become of him.

Odd - I knew a kid who looked just like that, dimples and all. He punched the sweetest little girl in the face just because and then walked away grinning. He'd be a grown man now and I hate to think what he's now doing to any women unlucky enough to come into his ambit.

Henri Paul was not drunk. Photos taken of him shortly before he got in the car to drive Princess Diana and Dodi show him in a very difficult-to-hold position tying his shoelaces and holding that position very steadily which he could not have done if he'd been drunk. The photographers were nowhere near the car. It was clipped by a white Fiat which sent it into the pillar it hit. The photo shown below was taken by an overhead automatic camera fastened at the top of the underpass right at its entrance. These facts are just for starters. Diana wasn't wrong 2 years before her death when she wrote in her diary she had a feeling she was going to be murdered by someone in the Royal Family and it would be in a car accident. Everyone needs to really research this and find out the facts. Don't just believe the pablum you are fed.

It was such a monumentally terrible idea that some people think he actually staged it on purpose because he was depressed and had money problems and wanted his suicide to leave his family with a big insurance payout.

Clowns, in the entertainment industry, didn't become synonymous with horror until after the serial killer John Wayne Gacy, and after Stephen King released IT. After kids started growing up watching Pennywise in the miniseries, that's when larger groups started fearing clowns.

My wife worked as a clown for many years. She said the only people she had issues with being afraid of her, or pretending to, were teenaged girls being dramatic. It wasn't uncommon for small children to be apprehensive initially, but she would ignore them, and pretty soon they were right up front with the other ones.

Just as long as she understands to not try interaction beyond an introduction and the person declined. I've had a clown keep coming back to me (I couldn't leave due to position in the crowd) and pushing me for interaction. It was like he saw my fear and decided to cure me or I just didn't want to involved in the show b/c I was too stuck-up. Please don't make my husband punch you if I say 'no' multiple times or you touch me.

The fear of clowns not directly tied to IT/Pennywise and/or John Wayne Gacy has always felt to me like such a lame whitebread upper middle class suburban type "phobia" to have. Like, I was raised in "the hood" and I actually loved clowns and how they tried to make you smile. I had real things to be afraid of, such as murderers or child kidnappers.

Both my Dad and my future Father-in-Law were on ships in the Pacific. My FIL, Royce, manned a gun that shelled the trees on the shoreline of Pacific islands where the Japanese soldiers were lying in wait. By this time, stories of Japanese atrocities were becoming widespread, so they were given no quarter; the trees were blown to splinters and whoever was in them blown into hamburger. Nevertheless, Royce felt terrible about it; before the war, he was going to become a minister. After he came home, he opened a garage/general store. Neither he nor Dad liked to speak about their experiences.

Japanese soldiers were messed up. They did horrible things. You think Hiroshima was bad, read up on some history with what japanese soldiers did to people. They woukd even take Chinese babies and throw them in boiling water, they would take women and repeatedly grape them. It's pretty gruesome. Even Natzis were horrified by the acts. John Heinrich Detlef Rabe was part of the natzi party and set out to save Chinese civilians.

"Gary Leon Ridgway (born February 18, 1949) is an American serial killer known as the Green River Killer. He was initially convicted of 48 separate murders committed between the early 1980s and late 1990s. As part of his plea bargain, another conviction was added, bringing the total number of convictions to 49, making him the second-most prolific serial killer in United States history according to confirmed murders."

Gary was convicted of 49 murders but many people suspect he could've killed 90. He used to kill sex workers because he thought that no one would care so he could kill as many as he liked. It's really interesting how conflicting his mind was because he killed sex workers out of hatred for them and would dump them like trash but he also was addicted to prostitutes himself and would use them even while married. He would kill them and then come back to have sex with their decomposing bodies 'until the flies came' burying them in groups so they were easier to find. He would drive out to them while his son was asleep in the car. His first wife told of how he used to take her to the woods and disappear while she was looking for him he would creep up and grab her.

The worst part about Ridgway's crimes was the cops. Almost all the victims were sex workers, so the pigs DGAF about investigating. How many women could have been saved, their deaths avoided, if male cops actually cared about the lives of women?

Other students at the school said it was common for athletes to put their shoes behind or inside the rolled-up gym mats, so one of the theories is that Kendrick leaped/slid into the rolled-up mat to retrieve his shoes, got stuck, went unnoticed, and asphyxiated.

On January 11, 2013, the body of Kendrick Johnson (October 10, 1995 – January 10, 2013) was discovered inside a vertical rolled-up mat in the gymnasium of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, United States, where he was a student.[1][2][3][4] After a preliminary investigation and autopsy concluded that Johnson's death was accidental, his family had a private pathologist conduct a second autopsy which concluded that he died from blunt force trauma. On October 31, 2013, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia announced that his office would open a formal review into Johnson's death. On June 20, 2016, the Department of Justice announced that it would not be filing any criminal charges related to Johnson's death.[5] Johnson's family filed a $100 million civil lawsuit against 38 individuals, stating that his death was a murder and that the respondents were participants in a conspiracy to cover up the homicide, which they claimed involved two sons of an FBI agent.[6] That

I remember reading into his story and it was really interesting. The story should be that a while he was in the gym, a fellow classmate took them and as a joke, put them into the mat. After he noticed they were gone he was looking around and soon realized they were in the rolled up mat he jumped in to receive them. His classmates found this funny, hence it was supposed to all be a joke and they soon left. They didn't realize that he was stuck and he couldn't get out of the rolled up mat and he ended up passing sway in it. His body left to be found the next day after they noticed him gone and an odd smell, being his body.

This was all before medication became available for serious mental illness. Lobotomies never gave their victims a "good life". They simply disconnected their brains so they could no longer act out their impulses. I had a relative that had one (she tried to kill her husband) and she was like a zombi who was there and "not there" at the same time. It was sad.

Lobotomy is a terrible thing to do to a human. It’s brain damage pure and simple. It just made it easier for the Drs and Nurses to cope with them. Never should happen again.

I wouldn't call this empirical data, exactly. This is a shining example of propaganda at its laziest. I'm not saying "no one ever found a smidge of relief" from a lobotomy, but there is a very tall stack of reasons why it's a crime to perform one now.

It was a procedure that would sever part of the frontal lobe. In theory, it was meant to help cure mental illnesses and calm patients down, but in practice many people were left unable to function, due to a "cure" that was more or less random destruction of brain tissue.

Sad, I think love from self is a better treatment for mental disorders, mental health facilities often make no sense to me, you go in broken, and often labeled broken and stay broken, no cures! Because most don't understand the human mind and heart. Some are coming around with treatment such as psychedelic mushrooms. So not all bad.

Dennis was a great father to her and also a good husband. He switched personalities completely when it came to his murders. I've never actually properly looked into his life but the two extremely different personalities are telling of psychopathy so therefore it's possible his relationship with his wife and daughter wasnt based off of genuine love but a facade to appear normal.

He was a big church goer. I know some people thinks that would make him less suspicious, but I would say the opposite. And he was not a great father and husband. He was known to be violent and a big disciplinarian. Which lines up with his fetish.

The fascination with eerie and macabre content often stems from our desire to understand the story behind unsettling images. This thematic curiosity is profoundly similar to the interest surrounding the photographic evidence of historical medical procedures. Exploring how unsettling visuals, like those seen in collections documenting controversial medical treatments, can evoke a visceral reaction reveals much about our psyche.

For more insights into the significance of such disturbing historical imagery, you might want to delve into the photographic documentation of historical medical procedures that were once deemed progressive yet horrifying.

He served under Putin. I'm not sure how "tragic" this assassination really was, if you get my meaning - other than the underlying tragic nature of ANY human being murdering another, no matter how evil the victim may be.

Doctor Anthony Fauci served under Trump. That doesn't make him a MAGA by any means.

This is just Raymond Robinson, a man who was tragically disfigured in an electrical accident as a child. He was not creepy. He is not someone to be feared, loathed, or hated. Simply a victim of a tragic accident.

I read somewhere that he knew he scared children, so he tried to go out after dark when kids were usually in their homes.

From Wiki: Raymond Theodore Robinson (October 29, 1910 – June 11, 1985) was a disfigured American man whose years of nighttime walks made him into a figure of urban legend in western Pennsylvania. Robinson was so severely injured in a childhood electrical accident that he could not go out in public without fear of causing a panic, so he went for long walks at night.

Apparently he tried to get to a birds nest and came too close to a power line causing an electrical ark
