I think recementing would be better, books will eventually deteriorate in the exterior elements. Besides those books may have some value and this destroys them.

I'd like to think these are incomplete books or with such stains that the story itself has become incomplete. We all know there are such books out there. Best not to think beyond that 😉

Or you could get the marker off with rubbing alcohol, not as creative but it works. I swear my son pours stuff on his clothing because he says "moms magic, she can get a stain out of anything!" 😒
