The coronavirus pandemic is far from over, but some Americans are already demanding that the country be “reopened” so that everyone can get on with their lives. However, there are plenty of people out there who think it’s too soon to reopen and they’re making jokes online and poking fun at this idea and the protesters who support it.

The truth is, whether or not the US should reopen is a very complicated issue. On the one hand, reopening too soon or too recklessly can create a second wave of the coronavirus, leading to countless deaths. On the other hand, millions of Americans are suffering from the effects of the lockdown and the number of unemployed grows each day. Bored Panda reached out to financial expert Sam Dogen, creator of the Financial Samurai website, to hear his opinion about the current economic situation in America and what we can expect in the months to come. Politics aside, the US is dealing with not just a public health crisis but also with an economic one: more than 26.4 million Americans have filed jobless claims since the middle of March. That’s 15 percent of the workforce!
"If we estimate an average of 3 million Americans file for unemployment a week for the duration of the lockdown, if the lockdown lasts until July 3, we will have close to 60 million Americans unemployed by then. 60 million would be roughly a 38% unemployment rate as there were about 160 million working Americans before the pandemic began. Luckily, all states provide very generous unemployment benefits now, with some unemployment benefits exceeding 5,000 dollars a month per person!" Sam explained what we could expect if the lockdown continues for several more months.
"We currently face a difficult balance between saving the economy or saving our lives. It's survival of the richest as the politicians who decide our fate all still get paid during the crisis. Many are also very wealthy," Sam said. "If a total lockdown lasts past June 15, I think the S&P 500 hits all-time lows and it will take years to recover, not months."
He continued: "If the lockdown starts easing before June 15, with parts of the economy opening up due to better testing and a significant flattening of the curve, I think the economy and the stock market can recover 70%-80% of its losses within six months. I'm personally betting on a gradual opening up of the economy before June 15 and am looking for any real estate bargains to be had before then."

Economists are warning that the world is facing the biggest economic slowdown since the Great Depression and the International Monetary Fund expects the US economy to contract nearly 6 percent this year. While the Pew Research Center estimates that coronavirus-related job losses and pay cuts have hit roughly 43 percent of American households.
The government sent out 1,200 dollar stimulus checks to citizens as part of a 2 trillion dollar relief plan. But some Americans believe this is a stop-gap measure that will only temporarily keep people afloat.
If I had the resources I'd print a bunch of these and hand them out at an anti-quarantine protest.
Meanwhile, some people participated in protests around the country and demanded that politicians reopen the economy. President Donald Trump showed his support for these protesters, but other politicians are divided about what to do. Some have signaled their support for the President and the protesters; others warn that it’s too soon to reopen. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced that his state would extend the quarantine until May 15.
"We still have to make sure we keep that beast under control as we all get very eager to get on with life and move on. This is only halftime in this entire situation," Cuomo said.

Greek here. The first outbreak in the country appeared on March 1st. Our schools closed on March 10 and our lockdown for the general public started on March 14. Until today we have approximately 2500 people that are affected by the virus and only 128 deaths. I am very grateful for the immediate actions that were taken by the government and I'm ver proud of the people for obeying those measures. We will gradually return to normal, starting May 4th and I'm pretty sure we will be OK ☺️
American here. I honestly don't know if this country understands what "normal" means. Even before the pandemic we had a lot of abnormal, mostly in our government.
I don't understand why everybody wants to go back to "normal" when normal is what caused emergence of this, and all the previous viruses; and nobody tries to learn why.

Just do not let outside tourists in too soon, otherwise there will be a really bad second wave of covid and not only in Greece...
This will be a really hard blow on the greek economy as we mainly depend on tourism as a country. The government is already thinking of strategies to not let the tourism industry crumble but still maintain the good results we gained from our efforts. It's really tough balancing everything but I have faith. Maybe we'll see you all next year?? :)
So you're doing better than us Czechs. First case was confirmed on March 1st, and our government reacted pretty quickly, but we already have over 7000 people infected and 214 dead.
American here. We will be okay too. Eventually. After many more deaths. OUR PRESIDENT IS AN IDIOT! As well as many people in the US. -_- I wish America was as smart as Greece.
Hopefully the return to group activities and reduced restrictions don’t start up the infections again. There could still be many asymptomatic carriers.

Another American here. STAY AWAY! Our entire population is crazy! We believe there is something in the water driving Americans to take risk aversion to astronomical heights! We will eat what we are told to eat. We will sleep when we are told to sleep. We will be bathed once a week fully clothed while our elite bettors douse us with freezing water from a fire hose. We have no freedom. We have no say in how we will live our lives. The land of the free and the brave is now the land of the land of the self imprisoned cowards. I repeat, stay away!!

well we hardly do any tests so 🤷♀️ as tsiordas stated the people affected are so many more (at least triple) and we just dont know it. only 128 deaths is good.. but the death rate is low anyway..
At Troufaki--no. Children can die of this--not just the elderly or those immuno-compromised. The health system would be overwhelmed, and there is evidence that people who have recovered from Covid can get it again
We need people to get infected so there is herd immunity. Yesterday we had 0 deaths, people get out of the ICU and not many cases are reported daily. Also, the death rate of this virus is higher than of any other type of virus (if what I've read is true)

I heard on the basis of current events in the US Mexico is planning it's own wall rather than waiting any longer for Trump to build his ;)
