Our parents weren't always parents. Yes, I know, that sounds self-explanatory, but let that sink in. Before these people were changing our diapers, they were young, wild, and free to do whatever they desired. In many cases, their old lives were even more impressive than our current ones. Building motorcycles, stopping bank robberies... It's one thing to hear those stories, but it's another to see photographic proof.

Surprised by and proud of their parents' past, people are sharing photos of their moms and dads on the subreddit r/OldSchoolCool. So continue scrolling to take a trip back in time to when they were rocking leather jackets and high-waisted jeans and when you're done, check out similar Bored Panda articles here and here.

The fact that she built this bike makes her even a lot cooler. I guess back in '83 she would have been out of my league.

The big question is: "Does she still have it?"

Interestingly. what is considered to be cool changes all the time. Research led by a University of Rochester Medical Center psychologist and published by the Journal of Individual Differences has discovered the characteristics associated with coolness today are quite different than those that gave birth to the concept of cool.

"When I set out to find what people mean by coolness, I wanted to find corroboration of what I thought coolness was," said Ilan Dar-Nimrod, Ph.D., lead author of Coolness: An Empirical Investigation. "I was not prepared to find that coolness has lost so much of its historical origins and meaning—the very heavy countercultural, somewhat individualistic pose I associated with [it]."

Dar-Nimrod and his colleagues recruited almost 1,000 people in the Vancouver, British Columbia, area, who completed an extensive questionnaire on the attributes, behaviors and individuals they associated with the word cool.

They did that by conducting three separate studies. In Study 1, participants generated characteristics that they perceived to be cool. In Study 2, two samples of participants rated dozens of these characteristics on two dimensions: coolness and social desirability. In Study 3, participants rated friends both on their coolness and on a variety of personality descriptors that were identified as relevant in the other studies.

A significant number of participants chose adjectives that focused on positive, socially desirable traits, such as friendly, competent, trendy and attractive.

    Idea for Private Benjamin !

    View more comments

"Today, ... sociability is considered to be cool, being nice is considered to be cool. And in an oxymoron, being passionate is considered to be cool—at least, it is part of the dominant perception of what coolness is. How can you combine the idea of cool—emotionally controlled and distant—with passionate?" Dar-Nimrod said surprised by the results.

Participants in the study still appreciated the traditional elements of cool, such as rebelliousness and detachment, but nowhere near as strongly as friendliness and warmth.

"We have a kind of a schizophrenic coolness concept in our mind," Dar-Nimrod said. "Almost any one of us will be cool in some people’s eyes, which suggests the idiosyncratic way coolness is evaluated. But some will be judged as cool in many people’s eyes, which suggests there is a core valuation to coolness, and today that does not seem to be the historical nature of cool. We suggest there is some transition from the countercultural cool to a generic version of it’s good and I like it. But this transition is by no way completed."

So I guess, in a way, you could say that these parents were ahead of their time.

skateboards from the 70s and early 80s were about the same size a penny, banana, even rocket board is in the US, and they didn't get their curvy shape until the 60s. Boards in the 40s up into the late 50s were square. The longboard didn't come out until the 1969-ish making the boards become bigger because of control, but penny boards were still the groove up until the the mid 80s early 90s then cruisers were a banger early 2000s made skateboarding really hit the market and the regular skateboard we see today is mostly for tricks (tony hawk VIBES) Boards like penny, banana, and rocket boards made a boom again in 2010-2015. And now today you can find any board deck shape you want, even square or surfboard long :)

Huh... I might know her- used to ride with a woman who was a ranger in Boston in the mid 80's. We rode on our school's equestrian team- and carpooled to the barn together. Once we Got pulled over for speeding (late for class) and the cops let us go when they saw her Ranger patch on her hat.

The nice thing about a unicycle is that you don't need to use your arms that much. Also, if you're going to crash, you just have to jump off and land on your feet. In other words, unicycles are the most efficient way to transport two cartons of beer.

My kids got a little Coleman motor bike for Christmas. The other day some idiot stole it, and while I was talking to the cops in my driveway, my husband pulled up with it in the trunk. He had found the guy because the kids down the road pointed which way he went. My husband chased him down and scared dude to death. We gave the kids candy for helping.

Welcome to farm life. I have a distant cousin who was driving a pickup to distribute cattle feed at 8 years old. He would put the truck in low-low, and crawl out the back window to toss hay off the back.

The fact that an 11 year old could buy a car with his farming savings should tell the "greatest" generation and boomers that kids today do NOT have the same opportunities to succeed.

I agree, Liz. For reference, classified ads from a Sunday issue of the Minneapolis Tribune from 1948 lists a variety of 1939 model year cars for between $600 and $800. $700 in 1948 is $7,558 in 2020. Even a particularly industrious 11yo child would be unlikely to make that much money on their own.

When they first got driverslincenes you didn't have to do a test. You just got them. My grandfather who could drive got one and my grandmother who didn't know who to drive also got one. Because you never know... she never could drive but had one for her whole life.

My parents came around the same time. And just FYI for people who don’t know Iranians, only like half of us / them came to escape the Ayatollah because they didn’t agree with the politics. The entire other half just came for school or whatever. Not every Iranian disagrees with the administration or needed to “flee.” It wasn’t a war zone.

Always. The Kurds have a history of not being recognized by the governments of the territories where they live. They have wanted independence. As always, meddlesome USA and England wouldn’t stay out of it. Instead, arming Kurds who fought with Kassem in the 50s-60s, then turning around and selling napalm to Saddam later to slaughter the Kurds. Lots of playing both sides. Iran and Turkey also participate in the fuckery against the Kurds, and the US has abandoned them so many times. It’s shîtty.

Those were the days! It took SO much AquaNet to get our hair up like that. And if it was a hot or humid day, it melted.

If we colorized this photo and added some millennial touches to it, you’d all call them douchebags and pretentious influencer wannabes. Likewise if social media was out back then, most of these “cool” people would be on it begging for likes. I don’t think people changed that much. Half of these people were certainly lame, they just took a good photo.

Such a useless war, so many people killed, crippled physically and mentally. Now hotels are built by the enemies of the past. Vietnam has been damaged beyond repair. North Vietnam was bombarded with Nepal which has caused thousands of children born with birth defects. Some are totally handicapped, malformations, stérile this is still the case today.
