Their reasons for that seem questionable, as they request specific information which the redditor likely shouldn’t even have anymore. To add insult to injury, it’s been four years since he’s been let go.

I had a similar interaction in my last job, guy was made redundant and was allowed to keep his laptop after it had been wiped and rebuilt so there was no data on it. After 2 years he calls me wanting to know the BIOS password. Had to explain several times that there was no BIOS password when he took the laptop so what makes him think I would know a password I never set. "You're in IT though". Yes but I am not a sorcerer. I ask out of curiosity I ask him when he set this password. The reply was he didn't but it appeared after he spilt water all over it. Cue a lot of internal screaming and I had to end the call.
If you can remember the passwords 4 years later, they weren't very good passwords.

The correct response is that OP doesn’t hold any information from after he left the job - this is an obligation set in really any contract whether employee or supplier. I’m confused though - they fired him and never replaced him? They just straight up haven’t been properly maintaining their network security? Yikes

Place I used to work for. I returned a part one evening well over a year after I'd left. The clerk searched the system for a receipt and just used the first one he found. Turns out it was for a store vehicle. DM calls me up threating me and tells me he's taking me to court for fraud or some similar BS. I told him "so, you're going to take ME to court because YOUR employee used an incorrect invoice to process a return. Go ahead, I want to see you explain that logic to a judge." As ignorant as that DM is, it didn't take him long to see the hole he was digging for himself and the company.
I can remember our phone number from 55 years ago, my parents' cars' license plates, my checking account number from 40 years ago, my driver's license number fron 25 years ago. I wish I could forget them, any advice? Fwiw, i can remember the passwords we used on the routers and switches. I wonder if they tried "calvin". No, wait, that's servers.
Oh yeah, ditto. Not 4 years later, but 4 months later. I made them sign a statement that all passwords would be changed after I leave, before I got frogmarched out of the building. Because no way will I be accused of doing something after I leave. Bad enough I got accused (without proof, because it didn't exist) of all manner of stuff. I wasn't going to be accused of accessing the servers after. Alas, the consultancy firm (owned by the brother of the HR guy who fired me) managed to completely wreck the system I'd spent the entire summer on setting up and securing. I then got a call saying "We need the backup tapes". The same tapes the HR guy insisted he take home every day. I never had them. :P When he said you set it up, you can tell them... I went "You can't afford me." and hung up.
The password is a six digit number. I'll give it back to you, you write me a check for that number.
Seems like the only appropriate response to a company demanding information from you after they fired you is 2 simple words: "I forgot". Suing someone isn't going to make them remember, and taking copies of the passwords with you when you leave would legally qualify as corporate espionage. In other words, giving them the passwords they are asking for would effectively be admitting to a crime. Plead the Fifth!

There're ways to create passwords.that are all different but related to the system you need to access an easy to remember if you know the mental algorithm used to creat them. I can't remember passwords from 4 years ago but if I have to access a certain service or configuration then I can easily regenerate mentally. For instance say a router in payroll. ascII for p is 1110000 add all the numbers so you get a 3. a is a vowel so next os a 1 and because it's a vowel multiply 3 * 7 now we have 3021. If the third y, not vowel so we pick a symbol @#€& what ever you decide, now add 3+0+2+1 of it a prime number etc etc. You get it..it seam hard at first. I've been doing this for years. I just went to a airline web I hadn't visited since 2019 an got in first time.
