Interview With Artist
Our ocean, land, and the array of species that call it home are succumbing to the poison of plastic. According to the United Nations, at least 800 species worldwide are affected by marine and land debris, and as much as 80 percent of that litter is plastic. It is estimated that up to 13 million metric tons of plastic ends up in the ocean each year—the equivalent of a rubbish or garbage truck load’s worth every minute.
And the ones that suffer the consequences of this are not only humans themselves, but also animals. To bring some awareness to the state of our planet and its inhabitants, Joan Chan, a 32-year-old comic artist from Hong Kong, started a comic series called "Just Comics."

I do find loads of straws when im beach cleaning but most of it is bits of net and really thin plastic fishing twine 🙁

The problem with the nets is that they don't get washed ashore. They get tangled up at rocks or other stuff under water like spider webs, catching up creatures and killing them. A lot of nets also have weights applied so they can't float away. Even when used without getting disposed into the ocean they create great damage by destroying the ocean floor.

Ghost nets are one of the biggest killers. Don’t go mass fishing! It causes so many problems. Just fish with a rod and throw all your unable wire, hooks and jigs in the bin.

You're absolutely right, but I think this comic is really showing the cat's perspective of what is considered mischievous behaviour. Sadly, lots of pets get abandoned because their humans fail to train them properly.

This is why rescues are so thorough about screening adopters. People complain when they are denied, but there's usually a good reason. Pets are a very personal choice and should never be given as a gift. I have a deep attachment to each of my pets, I couldn't imagine anyone picking out a pet for me. And to give a pet as a gift to a child sends the message that a pet is "thing" - no different than a toy, not a family member that should be treated as such.

The Earth will be just fine. It’s recovered from 5 mass extinctions so far. In fact, the Earth would be better off without humans. The reason people need to fight climate change, pollution, etc., is to ensure the survival of the human species.

"I create these comics because of my love for animals.
Having worked in the defense of animals for over 10 years, I understood how smart they are and the scale of their suffering in the agriculture and fishing industries.
They are in my heart and mind every day."
First, we asked the artist if she had any major influences in her life that might've helped her to develop and refine her style.
"It's a mix. I have liked reading Hong Kong and Japanese comics since I was young, like Dragon Ball, Doraemon, Old Master Q, and some old western newspaper comics like Vater und Sohn. My parents own a newspaper store so I read all kinds of comics when I was young and went to the public libraries often."

Earth has been around for billions of years, it's survived catastrophes far worse than anything we could ever dish out, and will still be here long after we're gone. Whenever I walk my dogs I carry a bag to pick up their poop...I pick up any trash I see and put it in the poop bag. You wouldn't think that I pick much up but I fill on average 2-4 bags every walk and we walk several times a day at all different places. People often mistakenly think they don't have the time to help the environment but if they look hard enough there are ways everyone can help in their daily lives during their regular activities.

My son and I collect "sea" glass from Lake Michigan every weekend and always bring garbage bags to pick up trash. (Bottles, caps, mylar balloons, lighters; rarely straws actually).
Art, in any kind of form, takes a lot of time not only to practice but also to produce, therefore we asked Joan how long it takes her to fully finish her comics.
"I draw very slowly, so it usually takes 1-2 days."
Being an artist is not easy, one can easily encounter a lack of inspiration, burnout, etc, so we wanted to ask Joan about her ideas for the comics.
"I’ll think of what issues I want to work on, doing research, and narrow down the message. I will try to form a story and see if there are any new connections. If I can't come up with a good idea, I will move to another topic.
I usually have lots of ideas.... lots of bad ideas. For me, the hard part is to recognize it's not a good idea and keep on thinking.
I try to focus on the large-scale problems of “production” animals and those that humans have a harder time empathizing with like fish and crustaceans."

Er... The sentiment is sweet, but I'm afraid dogs and pigs are carnivores/omnivores.... Take a look at the picture to see what I mean. You can pick your diet, but I'm not sure these animals should go vegetarian as well.... (btw, I'm pointing this out because I really did encounter such pet owners in the past)

Hm ... weird people. I adopted a cat in January (wasn't really looking for one), and, of course, she gets to eat fish and meat. I, on the other hand, wouldn't even buy pills covered in lactose if there was any chance of getting some without, according to Donald Watson's definition of what qualifies as vegan. I even wrote a letter to a company making pills I need to ask if they'd mind leaving out lactose (they didn't answer, and the brand changes every time anyway, as the insurance has a contract with different suppliers - as long as not specified with a reason they consider valid, I don't get to chose any brand of medication). But, anyway - I didn't decide this cat will be born, but I can decide she's to have a decent life around people who care about her, love her, and meet all her needs ... and, with a cat, these needs include flesh.

Adopt don't shop only works if the rescues respond to your inquiries. I asked about a few different dogs, only one responded...weeks after we finally found a good breeder. At least respond and say dog has been adopted, something. I got nothing and that is why even the bad breeders will keep going.

Yeah, my brother wanted to adopt a rescue, but they would not let him because he did not have a yard. I tried to adopt the same one because my brother wanted her so badly, but they wouldn't let me adopt her because my yard was too small. That poor dog sat in the rescue for a year and a half, despite both of us trying repeatedly to adopt her. We are still mad, because that is a lot of time to take from a dog who has people who really wanted to adopt her.

I adopted one of those puppy mill dogs when a breeder dumped a bunch at the shelter. It took years to teach her to dog because she was mistreated so badly.
As we mentioned before, sometimes creative work can cause quite a burnout, therefore we asked the artist how she dealt with that as well.
"Yes all the time, every time after I get one good idea I will worry about the next one….and then it repeats."
We also asked Joan about how people reacted to her work.
"I often draw sad animal stories. I think it's relatable in some ways. We all experience the same, non-human animals have emotion and are able to suffer too, although we don't feel it exactly the same way, but we do share the same living experience as we are all sentient beings. Many people feel sad and heart-breaking for what is happening to animals."

My first pet was a hamster when I was 7 or 8 years old. His name was Timmy. For a year, I took great care of him. He was fed, watered, exercised, and his bedding was cleaned once a week. Because I was so young, I got bored of him. I gave him to my big brother (who was 11 or 12 at the time), thinking that he would take care of Timmy. I was wrong. Timmy died of neglect, and it was all my fault. I'm sorry, Timmy. I was so wrong.

This is the main reason I don't have any pets of my own (yet). Though I could probably afford the basics and the occasional vet visit, I wouldn't be able to afford it if they have any serious or continuous health conditions, and that wouldn't be fair to them.

I have a hamster. She has a large cage, two stories, lots of toys, a wheel, all the food, water, and attention she could ever need. She goes out at least twice a day to play with me. For awhile I thought that all small pets had the same care and attention, but then I saw people with their rodents in tiny cages, their water empty, the cages filthy. It's horrible. They don't even pet them or anything, just let them sit there. Please take care of your pets </3

Again, I know I'll get roasted for this... if they aren't wild captured I believe that they can serve as great ambassadors for ocean protection and preservation. Maybe the wealth of info on the internet negates this some, but the first time I went to sea world as a child was eye opening. I fell in love with marine life. When applying to a marine biology program at a university in Maine, I heard a lot of negativity for marine parks. I get it, but all I could think was that I wouldn't be there applying for that program if it wasn't for that trip to sea world....

the only time that having dolphins in tanks is acceptable is when they are being rehabilitated or cannot survive in the wild on their own. example: winter the dolphin (google her, the story is very sad)
The creative process is not easy, but there are some enjoyable parts about it.

We also asked about the inspiration behind the artist's Instagram account.
"After graduating from university, I had a regular column in a Hong Kong Newspaper Am730 but I wanted to reach a larger international audience, so it naturally drew me to the biggest platforms like Instagram and Facebook."

Also, considering ethical reasons not to eat certain things "causing a scene" - it goes the other way round. The mindless ignorant fug who set up the menu is causing the scene, and causing the suffering, and should cause himself out of business. I really dont think animals should be in captivity. Maybe for rehabilitation but not forever. I'd like to put humans in the zoo's aandaquariums and such. Let others gawk at them, tease them, treat them poorly. It's so sad.

It's heartbreaking to see how humans treat other humans so why would they care about treating animals with compassion....seeing those trucks in NC traveling with pigs in extreme hot temperatures all jammed while the driver is enjoying AC and sipping his drink.... meanwhile those poor animals are heading to the slaughter where no cameras are put up to show the clientele how they suffer before they die to satisfy the consumption of cheap meat by greedy careless humans ....it's a horrible reality that's why I stopped eating meat

I used to drive OTR up until roughly three years ago. A few years ago, walking across a truck stop parking lot, I passed a bull hauler. Hadn't been cleaned yet, and of course it possessed an odor beyond rank. I swear, by Cthulhu's tentacles, I could smell s***, p***, and fear. Vegetarian since March 10, 2003.

Ive been vegan since i was little and id never even heard of it, ive always been allergic to milk and as soon as i was old enough to know meat came from dead animals i just cried so my mum never tried to make me eat it. I grew up vegetarian and I never understood why people love and care gently for dogs and cats but abuse/kill pigs and cows. I think those anymals want to be loved too and can be very affectionate if you give them a chance. Its touching to see that this issue finally gets more attention.

Just don't eat 23492506900 pounds of it (like what the heck how can people eat that much meat) and also, if you choose to eat it, get stuff that hasn't been abused like most animals are. The best way to stop this madness is to stop buying things stuffed with goose feathers. Check the materials of the jacket you want to buy. Please dont buy anything that involved animal suffering. Change them for things made of artificial materials. Even better if they are recycled materials!

We’re animals. Animals hurt, kill, and parasitize each other - and also help, comfort, and show empathy. Orcas and dolphins kill seals and baby whales for fun, stalking and torturing them for hours before killing them and then not even eating them. We do a lot of horrible things, but killing other animals - even cruelly - is definitely not a uniquely human trait.

I was once served a live fish in China. They had sliced off the sides, left enough to keep it alive for a while, quickly fried the sides, put it back on the franticallly breathing fish and expected us to eat. Had to leave quickly, I was so disgusted.

Same! when i was younger went to a lobster restaurant, saw one lobster with a ranbow band around her claws, thought she was the coolest! named her shelly. later, my parents got their lobster, and there was a rainbow band on the claws. im sure it was good lobster, but i dont remember because i was crying too hard.

How many outraged people here are NOT vegetarians? I am one, over 45 years. Due to growing up on a family farm full of fluffy cuddles and crying when an animal died (except chickens, I admit, I didn't like those, but I didn't eat them, either!)

I never understood why you would even want to apply something to your face that needs to be tested so they can be sure it won't just eat your skin off and burn your eyes. While at work, I rescued a rat from a glue trap using hand lotion, then threw all glue traps away. Those pads are sooo sticky. Horrible! Use a live trap for heavens sakes.

I haven't traveled by plane in over a decade and a half. Driving may take a lot longer, but I don't have to worry about liquid limits, taking off my shoes, getting my cuticle scissors confiscated (yes, that did happen to me!), or TSA personnel with rotten attitudes. Besides, no terrorist ever hijacked a Ford Focus.

So, people stop eating meat. Do we just release all of these farm animals that don't know how to fend for themselves to the wild? What happens when they start to overpopulate because they have no natural predators anymore; they breed quicker than most other wild animals. What about lack of fear from vehicles? They're used to them, so wandering on the road will happen and cause increased numbers of accidents compared to now. What about the farm animals that have developed symbiotic relationships with humans? Milk cows need to be milked nd sheep need to be sheared or they get infections and die. I could go on and on. Stopping eating meat is not the answer. Stopping using farm animals is not the answer. Using all parts of the animal and raising them respectfully and more sustainably is a better answer

We are not natural predators of farm animals, and they will not overpopulate because they simply do not naturally breed at the rate humans breed them Even if the animals were released in to the wild, instead of being allowed to live out their natural lifespans in a sanctuary, they would have fear of cars and roads, as the only vehicle they are likely to have encountered is a tractor Farm animals have been selectively bred to need milking and shearing more frequently than their wild counterparts - truly wild sheep shed their wool themselves, and cows feed their babies with their milk and so do not need humans to exist. Please can you describe how you raise someone respectfully to eat them?

That is a part which the vegetarian critics dont understand. We dont eat meat also because we feel empathy for the animals and are conscious of the suffering they are forced to live. Look up the Cleveland Balloonfest of 1986. They released a million and a half balloons, with disastrous results. Bad weather caused most of the balloons to descend, causing traffic accidents, spooking horses, and making the search for two missing fishermen impossible.

Old smaller cow breeds are slowly coming back to Norway, and they pretty much can be marked green compared to modern cow due to their food ways, wether they fart less cause of this I dont know. They give better cheese result with their milk too even though they dont produce as much as the modern. To be honest, leather clothes are much more durable and biodegradable, in difference to plastic. But fur farms are a pest that shouldn't exist, those skins and furs should come from animals that got put down anyway for the purpose of eating them, or were shot in regular hunting seasons (I don't know if the US has that too, but my country has a count that only allows a specific amount of animals per species to be hunted in specific times of the year. It's population control in the first place). Every animals life and death should be treated with respect, just as our ancestors used to.

I remember for a short time we had to keep our dog on a chain as she kept running off chasing sheep, and the local farmer said he would shoot her if he saw her chasing his sheep again, and that was one of the most painful experiences of my life, seeing her locked up most of the day :'(

I once found a frog that ate one of these worms on hooks for accident. The frog wasn't silent, not at all. People wouldn't fish that way anymore of fish made the same sounds as that poor frog.

When Doomsday comes, the Fat Cats will rush to their hidden bunkers in the mountains and cower there. However, they might be simply delaying the inevitable. While in their bug-out shelters, they could succumb to cabin fever. Anybody experience that during COVID lockdown? Also, their supplies won't last forever, so sooner or later they'll have to come out. The world they find may have no place for them. Mr. Hedge Fund Manager may be good at manipulating numbers, but can he hunt or fish? Can he tell edible plants from dangerous ones? Can he even build a lean-to or start a camp fire?

Good forest management, which includes removing trees, can reduce the severity of wildfires, save a lot of wildlife, eliminate a lot of pollution due to smoke, and conserve the resources otherwise used to rebuild destroyed properties.

milk isn't an issue like meat. it's not great, but if you buy responsibly why be full vegan? milk is good, it takes less cows to make milk than to make meat so it's better to the environment, and it doesn't result in anyone's death!

Point is not how we produce meat (or vegetables for that matter). Point is how we treat it before. Nothing can be good produced in large quantities in super small spaces. Vegetables are treated with substances which cause permanent defects in pollinators. Meat can't be tasty if animal was stressed when alive. Buy local. But from people who care about their product while it's alive / growing,try to grow your own if you have chance. And yes, you'll still eat meat and vegetable but knowing that your food was cared about with love. Had nice respected life, got good food and space. Not eating meat solves nothing. And "cruelty free" lifestyle is biggest lie on this world now.

Facts: When eating fruits, they are simply a protection for seeds and are not really alive. Their taste attracts animals accordingly to disperse the seeds (Brinjals like this one above are technically fruits). The life is dormant inside the seeds, which can survive if sown and nurtured, else they will die. When eating meat, you have actually killed a living, breathing creature. Nothing can change that fact.
