In 1988, my mother converted to a Jehovah’s Witness, and for a while, I found myself drawn in as well. What began as a simple curiosity and a Bible study soon led to me knocking on doors and distributing copies of The Watchtower. Here’s what happened when I tried to leave…

Share on FacebookI left after 18ys of humiliation and abuse !! Was born into it.. I now realise it was child abuse at its worst and I was put on the platform and told I was a harlot and all should pray for me .. I did get an apology from the circuit overseer many years later but the being disfellowshiped well tech I left .. was in the long run the best thing I ever did but seriously what religion in the name of God would also shun a new born !! Horrid culture
This is so powerful, i wish it could be mass printed and spread throughout all these cults. I have seen first hand how religious fundamentalism destroys lives. Particularly the lives of young children and women. it is a horrible A fate that I wish on no one. Every person deserves to live a free life as long as they don't harm others. Your words are so strong so full of pain and redemption. your story is so important!
I'm a Christian. Great job on leaving the JW organization. While I never been a JW myself, I do agree with your points about its power structure, and I am very sorry you had to go through pressure like that. In Christianity, we do not mean to force believers to do certain works. In fact, it is a sin to preach that works is the ticket to heaven (if you are interested in this, Galatians goes hard on this). It would abdicate the point of why Jesus died for our sins, which he did, not because of our works, but because this Son of God loves us that much. Ephesians 2:8-9 simplifies this, stating that it is by grace through faith that we are saved, not of works, so we don't brag.
Yea it was probably really hard for you and I'm sorry that you had to go through that
Congratulations on realizing you were in a bad place. I read “The Truth Book”- not the JW version but a memoir about the horrors a brother and sister went through when their mother converted and then married a monster. I’ve never understood why JWs proselytise because, according to their beliefs only 144,000 people will be saved. Wouldn’t they want to winnow down the numbers so their chances go up? I know, thats a cynical way to think of it.
It's also that they keep and punish things inside without bringing in authorities so for example child s*x abuse was not dealt with legally
