Cecil the lion was one of the most popular attractions at Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park – until he was killed by Walter Palmer, a dentist from the U.S. who paid $55,000 for the “pleasure” to kill the 13-year-old wildlife celebrity. The backlash from animal lovers around the world has been so strong that the dentist’s website has shut down and his office is shuttered.
Palmer, a trophied wild animal hunter, paid a guide to lure the wild cat out of the park at night so he could be poached. He shot and wounded Cecil with a bow, but was only able to kill the big cat 40 hours later. Cecil was beheaded and skinned – his carcass remained unused.
Not only did his lion hunt kill a local celebrity at the park, but, according to the Zimbabwean Tourism Authority, the hunt was illegal, and a criminal investigation is currently underway. African cat’s death will affect more than just him and his fans. Now that Cecil is gone, other male lions will probably kill off the 24 cubs that he had left with his pride to ensure that their own bloodlines live on instead.

It's nature. The only way these cubs will be saved is if humans intervene, then they'll live in a zoo or wildlife rescue somewhere. Either way, they won't be able to live their life as they should. Unfortunately most of the male cubs would die whether or not Cecil was still alive. They would end up competing with each other to become next in line. That's just the way they are.

And $550,000 for each cub that dies as a result of his actions. If all cubs are killed, that's 25 x $550,000 = $13,750,000.00 to be used in the prevention of poaching and the ending of making big game species a hunted animal. And no bankruptcy option, so if he doesn't have, he loses all he has and works the rest off. Either as a dentist or risking his neck to stop other poachers like himself. Kind of works to solve the problem and, unlike jail, acts a deterrent to rich, bored jackasses who think this kind of crap is fun. Just saying.

The only time i think hunting is good is when it is a part of your life. Just like tribe people do and in the past native americans. When you need to hunt to feed others and yourself, to use as much of the animal as possible as to say you respect what the animal offers you for its life. Hundreds of other (big) game animals are being killed in the same fashion. Some well to do "hunter" goes to Africa, near a reserve, where these animals are not as weary, used to harmlessly cross humans in parcs. Hunt of the chosen animal (there is a list to pick from) is arranged for big money in a specific are on a specific date (makes you wonder about the agenda of the animal, doesn't it???!!!) with the assistance of a professional hunter and some locals so no harm will come to the paying guest. "Sports" hunting must be forbidden. Unfortunately BIG money and many corrupt sticky fingers are involved. Against personal gain, particularly in developing countries, animal protection doesn't stand a chance.
