Japan’s Cat Island Asks Internet For Food, Gets More Than They Can Store
94Kviews
Aoshima, also known as Cat Island, is a tiny remote island in the Ehime Prefecture of southern Japan where cats outnumber humans 6 to 1. So you can imagine the horror these people felt when recently the food supply service was put on hold due to bad weather conditions. To prevent the feline-uprising, the residents turned to the Internet.
“Please send cat food to Aoshima,” said the Tweet of a cat caretaker. “There are no stores to buy food here on Aoshima. The people here acquire their necessities by taking a boat to the mainland. However, it’s extremely windy in winter, and boat service is often suspended.”
A few days later, the island was overwhelmed with donations. “Please stop sending supplies (cat food) to Aoshima,” said the following Tweet. “We got far more than we ever expected, and there’s no more storage room. We’ll be fine until April. Thank you all very much.” Internet, we salute you.

Wish this would happen for shelters...
Me too, small shelters like mine are lucky if we get any kind of donations at all.
Where are you?
If the shelter needs food, they should do a food drive. People love animals, and would surely donate if they asked, and if they needed food.
which shelter is yours?
Should go to FB and ask!
I think we should send money for a veterinarian to go to the island and fix the cats. With up to 4 litters per year there is going to be a tipping point where they will start killing them if they don't nip it....so to speak. Does anyone know if they spay/neuter?
They do not.
Totally with you on this!
Meh. I understand the importance of animal (pet) population control, but can we have an article about pets without such comments already? I used to support these "spay/neuter comments" at first, but it's getting kinda annoying to read these things on repeat... I hope I didn't offend anybody.
It is vital to remind people of this necessity. You clearly have no idea how huge (and I mean HUGE) a problem it is. Last I knew, it was 35 cats (and 17 dogs) per man, woman and child in North America alone. I suspect it is now much higher. So, seriously, stay on board with the important concerns. For as long as Japan does not ensure sterilization, their problem of sufficient food is only going to increase, and not in a small way.
AND the I D I O T of the day award goes to... DariaB, the person who doesn't think they should spay and neuter the already overpopulated cats on Aoshima Island..!
Wow, this is how to put the power of Internet to good use. Sorry for my bad English :)
Nothing wrong with your English :-)
