My name is Gil Watson I am a Florida based sculptor specializing in woodcarving. Most of my work is commissioned. This particular piece was for a client who brought me this large cedar log and asked me to do something with it. Knowing how much my client loves mermaids I decided to do this piece for him. I first chain sawed the cedar log just to get the correct shape, all the rest was hand carved as that is my preferred method of working. I only use power tools to get a basic shape then continue from there by hand. The tail of the mermaid I painted to look like a redfish, which is one of our local fish.
