Woman Captures Every Stage Of Her Mastectomy In Creative Photo Series
Aniela McGuinness, a 32-year-old actress from Hollywood, Florida, decided to deal with her breast cancer with a photoshoot. Titled “My Breast Choice,” McGuinness photographed herself as Rosie the Riveter prior to her cancer treatment and the Bride of Frankenstein after. She learned she had cancer just three days before a planned appointment to schedule a preventative mastectomy; McGuinness had lost her mother to ovarian cancer on July 5th, 2013.
These photo series explore “the impact breast cancer, a double mastectomy, and chemo can have on a woman’s body & soul and uses humor & honesty to go beyond just being a cancer survivor,” explains McGuinness. “Mainly, I needed something to focus on while I went through this, a place to release my creativity and feel with my photo ideas. My Breast Choice gave me that.”

“Have you ever googled mastectomy before and after photos? It’s a heartbreaking array of faceless women’s maimed breasts under florescent lighting”
“Before removing my breasts I wanted photographic evidence of what they looked like, but I didn’t want mug shots of attempted murders”
The uncensored photo is available on McGuinness’ website
This photo was taken after the mastectomy and a week before Halloween
“I wanted a photo that captured how I felt”
McGuinness felt plastic while having her expanders in and her hair had not yet regrown, so she did the Mannequin shoot
“I decided not to get my nipples reconstructed or tattooed because I enjoy the jokes and freedom I get from not having them”
“I wanted to change the images that women saw of mastectomies”
“No more Before and After photos. I wanted them to see the Evolution, the Life, and the HUMOR in this dark situation”

Aniela McGuinness is a brave, couragess young woman who makes me proud to be a woman. She gave me a sense of empowerment and took away a deep fear that we all have - that of the unknown. I can't thank her enough for the courage to post the beautiful photos and teach us all an importaqnt lesson. Thank you.
This beautiful woman, what a monument to joy! Thank you Aniela, for your extraordinary gifts.
This keeps me going through my own fight with breast cancer. She brightens my day ever time I feel down. Laughter is the best medicine, so much so when the disease is cancer! Thank you for your brilliant and courageous and humorous ideas! Btw, oil pulling saved my life, or at least my mouth. Grateful! <3
Wow you are a survivor and have truly overcome some of the worst things. You are a very strong and beautiful women.
Absolutely love this! Her creativity, but mostly her bravery shines through this series of photos.
she is so clever and gorgeous and brave! its funny how you can show fake nipples but not real ones
Except why is it that all of a sudden it's okay to show boobs if they don't have nipples? Ugh, stop it with the silly censors please
Why don't you censor yourself out of the conversation if we humans are so stupid Quant?
If you have a rude opinion just keep it to your self and you won't be hated
