Why?

I am Canadian. Canada doesn't need an ADA because we have the Canadian Human Rights Act. Underneath that, every Canadian province has a Human Rights Code, through which persons with disabilities can challenge things like lack of accessibility. Provinces usually lose, so they tend to work hard to ensure they don't get challenged under the HRC. In Ontario's case, by way of circumventing HRC challenges, they set out an Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. It states existing public pathways do not have to be altered for accessibility, but new ones do, except under special circumstance. Thanks for the info, Doodlebug. I was surprised by how frequently my acqaintance ran into inaccessible places, but if no retrofitting is required, it makes sense. It's a shame, however, because it means so many disabled people will not have access to the majority of locations for probably a few decades. But I suspect one of those pesky lawsuits will solve that problem, too, a lot sooner!

This was in Canada; they don't have the equivalent of the ADA, and one guy I know who uses a wheelchair in Toronto is always complaining about the lack of decent access. Can a Canadian set the record straight re requirements for a ramp in Ontario, at least?

Limiting screen time: absolutely. But hey: don't judge to soon... Toddlers aren't dolls you can put on a shelf. They want to explore and see everything. Keeping them away from screens is just impossible these days...

Who downvotes common sense? They don't need to be given screens. They only want them because of watching mum and dad.

I was shocked a few years ago when my 6 year old nephew had a $600 phone (an expensive toy), while I had a $40 flip phone from Wally World. And his parents were poor. But they also had expensive phones. 😕

Mine didn't get one, nor any tech until she was 8, and it was someone else giving her a Kindle without checking with me first. I allowed her to use it for music and white noise. She's 13 now and is not a phone zombie like all her friends. It's refreshing. She focuses on her grades and martial arts and is a stellar future citizen. Parents that say it's hard don't want to deal with a few temper tantrums.

A reasonable argument Ben. I don't deny it's a reality but whose fault is that? The people responsible for the children (most of us). Yes, children do want what the others have but you distract them and give them something age appropriate. Yes, it is hard work but what do people expect? Toddlers are a nightmare and you feel you never say anything but 'No'. However, there are age appropriate tablets for small children - ones that come without the adverts and inappropriate content.

Well, people with toddlers might downvote. My guess is that Chris doesn't have toddlers. Or maybe did years ago before technology, but yeah, kids of any age experience peer pressure even if they don't know what to call it. If a child sees another child (friend, sibling, cousin, stranger, whoever) with a toy, they usually want that same toy. Same goes for phones or iPad. I'm not saying it's right, but it's reality.

Exactly. I'm most certainly not advocating school shootings, those are horrific. But it's kinda the school's fault for not helping them out and driving them to this point

@A Dyke From The Dreamworld: Mostly, it's society's fault. Rarely are there ever any mass school shootings here in Europe. We have proper gun laws and health care to cover for mental illness. You need to fix both.

It would be a little ignorant to think that this isn't going to happen again, sadly, and encouraging to know that, in this case, the police were able to discover a possible threat and check it out before another mass shooting happens. Just my opinion
