While we may imagine a dystopian future of thought police, killer robots, and nuclear fallout, the real future predictions are much more boring. Instead of being brutally brainwashed and enslaved by fascist, authoritarian regimes, we have willingly enslaved ourselves. By allowing the top 1% to get exponentially richer, we drown in a sea of debts, tech, advertising, endless wars, environmental destruction, addictions, depression... the list goes on.
Brilliant, isn't it? But it's ok; there's always Facebook to scroll through (Bored Panda too, obvs), Netflix to watch, chemical-laden meals to consume, manufactured outrages over a mermaid's skin color to comment on. Who's got time for thoughtful resistance in this sick, sad world? Even those that think they are resisting by electing bigoted billionaires, bankers and Eton toffs to represent them are simply playing into their hands, as their dishonest, scaremongering claptrap divides us ever further over political, racial and gender lines!
Sometimes we need to take a step back and see the forest for the trees. This list, compiled by Bored Panda, contains some pretty terrifying examples of present-day dystopian society, things that make you realize that beyond all the distractions of trying to survive and thrive in the rat race, something's not quite right with this world.

Or, or, or...maybe....we say, "consumers enable illegal immigrants to come over and take jobs at below market wages (keeping them trapped in poverty and subject to abuse) because your need to keep the morning latte and avocado toast at only $10 outweighs the need to provide safe working environments at fair wages for workers. Of course it could be possible to increases wages if businesses and corporations would be allowed to increase their cost of consumer products without you all melting down into b1tchfests....but please lecture me some more on evil business owners from your iPhones and Nikes.

Those who gain social security cards mean that they applied for work authorization and have the proper documents for it. That also means they'll have to pay taxes or taxes can be withheld from their wages.

It's the ones using somebody else's social security numbers that bother a lot of people. Not many for sure, but enough ID theft to make it a profitable business and much easier to get than official docs.

That's only a half truth. Illiegal immigrants didn't become criminals over night. Many Capitalists are defrauded by these criminals by simply accepting their "FAKE IDs" and other bogus documents. The term 'boring dystopia was coined by the late academic and cultural theorist Mark Fisher in 2015. He used it to refer to the "bland, mildly coercive signs that abound in late-stage capitalist society, which foster a vague sense of isolation or unease."
He started a Facebook group that documented these signs as a way to develop consciousness about the world around us. "It was understood from the start to be a consciousness-raising exercise, encouraging people to perceive the actual state of Britain rather than the PR state," Fisher said in an interview with Vice. "Which is surprisingly hard, because there's this mixture of Silicon Valley ideology, PR and advertising which distracts us from our own aesthetic poverty, and the reality of what we have. Which is just all these crap robots…"

I remember being in a store in London years ago when a man started clutching his chest and slumped to the floor. The clerk behind the register vaulted over the counter and started administering CPR. He got a colleague to dial 999 and got his colleague to put the phone on speaker and hold the phone while he talked to the dispatcher. When he talked he used medical Jargon and the dispatcher asked if he was a doctor. He said just about. I have graduated from medical school and have finished an internship but there were no full time jobs for me anywhere so I am working in a shop to make ends meet. So sad to think that a bright young doctor who just saved a man's life can't be working in a hospital where he belongs.

Way back in the late 60s/early 70s when I was looking for colleges, I was searching for a Marine Biology/Zoology accredited school that was reasonably priced. I had some scholarships all lined up (my best was actually from TIME Magazine when I placed first in a current events challenge. Long story short, all the schools I wanted to attend were incredibly expensive. Unfortunately, our family could not afford it, even with the scholarships. My best friend, however, did come from a family that could afford it. She picked the Marine Biology/Zoology that I was looking forward, and I was crushed. Fast Forward to late 60s early 70s. I ended up going to a technical school for computer operations, and literally had 6 jobs who wanted to hire me. My friend who had the super expensive four-years ended up working in bookkeeping for a major hotel chain. I was able to retire early. So you never know where he will follow!

Let's assume these 8 guys have $1 Trillion. Divide that by 4 Billion...$250 each. Congratulations, you've solved everyone's money problems...or Divide by 150 Million...$6.5k. Maybe solves things for a year or two but what are you going to do after that? Those 8 people won't make $1 Trillion in 2 years.

Amen. If I wanted to (during summer holiday) take a bus to the city centre (about 3km), I should do it between 7am and 6pm from Mon to Fri. The bus goes once per hour. No buses on Sat or Sun. If I wanted to go to the other side of the city for something, I'd need to change and wait for the connection, I guess that'd be anything from 1 minute to almost an hour depending on where you go. By car it takes max 10min to get to city centre and 15-20 to get to the other side of the city. And I live on a decent sized city, don't get me started about smaller places -.- bicycles are of course nice but you can't carry everything with a bike and during winter the roads are terrible.

What's infuriating is not the transplant thing, but that the kid is homeless in the first place. Transplant organs don't exactly grow on trees and can only be given to patients who can be expected to be capable of sticking to a rigorous regime of immunosuppressants for the rest of their lifes - which I assume is hard to do when you live on the street. Fix your homelessness problem, America, and stories like this one will dissappear by themselves

I've watched Live Rescue on TV only to see people that are all messed up from accidents and/or shot and bleeding refuse an ambulance because of the cost. That's insane when people are more afraid of cost than treatment. This c**p needs to stop. Universal healthcare for all.

healthcare is actually far worse in some countries that have socialized healthcare like canada for example. healthcare where I was born (in the soviet union) was also horrible and it was a socialist "universal" healthcare system. We didn't even get anesthesia for surgery and it was common for people to die from diseases like the flu. I am very thankful to my family that they literally gave up everything (we came to the US with literally nothing but the clothes on our backs because we had to pay so much money just to come here legally) to come to the united states. The quality of healthcare here compared to socialist countries like the one I was born in (USSR) is incredible. The 3rd world conditions we endured in the USSR are pretty much unheard of in the american healthcare system. Healthcare here in the US is lightyears ahead of probably 75% of the world. Don't take my word for it, though, visit some socialist countries and see how their healthcare is for yourself. Ask locals

Not entirely true. If you are involved in a road traffic accident you are charged for the ambulance. However, it's usually paid for by the insurance company of the person who caused the collision. I know this as I was hit by a lorry and their insurance paid for my ambulance bill.

thankfully because of the competitive spirit of capitalism that is so prominent in American culture we have alternatives like uber to get to places we need to go. sadly people in socialist countries don't enjoy that privilege and often have to wait weeks to receive urgent care. people in canada have literally lost limbs thanks to the long waits for public healthcare due to their crappy "universal healthcare" system that essentially forces them to either wait until they have to have their limbs amputated/die or seek care at a private clinic instead. they're lucky that private clinics still exist as in a purely socialist system that option wouldn't even be available. we have it pretty darn good here in the US all things considered. i would know, i immigrated here from the soviet union in the early 90s and I can tell you from personal experience that it is much much better here. just about anyone from most other countries on earth would tell you the same thing too

White parents do that, too. One of my principals in Pennsylvania staked out one house and watched the mother drop her kids off at a bus stop. Of course, this white mother didn't go to prison. Her kids just got kicked out of our school district. In Pennsylvania, the state did not adequately fund the school districts, so they relied on property taxes. This problem would disappear if states enacted open enrollment laws like they do in Minnesota. In that state, school districts actually compete!!!! to recruit more students, even disadvantaged and students with special needs.

As far as I know, some "public" services in the States are paid by the members of each community. If you live in a rich area you pay more taxes and the Council has more money, so there are better schools. If you live in a poor area, you pay low taxes, but the schools probably are c**p, because they have a very small budget. The thing is, if you pay very low taxes in your area and you lie and say you live in a rich area so that your children can attend a rich school, it's stealing. In their opinion, not mine. I hope my explanation makes sense.

And on top, medically absurd. For the health of mother and baby, studies show that this early bonding, especially after a c-section, is invaluable! It has been found that it mitigates problems otherwise associated with c-sections, such as weakness is the baby and breast-feeding-related problems. And it will greatly reduce the risk of the mother become depressive after birth. But hey, the hospital could earn money if any of this happens, and the baby-food industry just waits for all these babys who "simply do not like breast milk". This is vile!

When my daughter was born, the total bill for everything was about 42k $. t was in Manhattan, Mount Sinai Hospital, really good, and they took care of everything, but yeah, you gotta sell your house to have a baby f you don`t have insurance :(( Sad but true.

Wait what??? I wish that was a joke. My aunt had her son 3 months early, has an emergency cesarean, stayed in hospital for a week or so, her son was in neonatal ward for 3 months with round the clock care etc and she had to pay nothing. Medicare paid for it all. So glad I live in Australia.

There is one thing we can do: Get out and vote. Vote for the senators and representatives who aren't afraid to push for single-payer, universal health care. And if someone calls you a socialist, tell them to look at Japan, which a) is hardly socialist, b) has the world's longest life expectancy, and c) has a well-established universal health care system.

People sat there and called me a socialist for wanting Bernie Sanders as president. He's for Universal Healthcare, Free College and taxing the c**p out of the 1%. All the friends that were freaking out about it..how they were going to pay 40% of their wages to these programs never looked at the campaign information. It said that if you earned over $230,000 as a couple, your taxes would increase $920 per year! Less than 1%. I asked these friends if they were really that greedy. And I also pointed out that his target was the big earners..like Oprah and Bill Gates. Two people that would probably gladly part with money if they knew it was going to help people.

And even WITH insurance s**t you need gets denied all the time. I had a life threatening brain condition and needed emergency surgery, I had a pre op MRI to assess how bad it was, then I needed one directly after to ensure the surgery was done well. I was supposed to have one a few days later after the swelling subsided to ensure all was still well , insurance denied it because I "just had one" despite being told by several medical professionals that things can drastically change after swelling goes down and I needed it to make sure I didnt have a brain bleed or anything else that could kill me. Insurance STILL said no, thankfully I was approved for aid through the hospital and my surgeon said to just get it and the hospital would have it covered because its like $26000 without any help.

You are right, except the Heimlich maneuver is no longer recommended by St Johns first aid teachers. Also if you need to do cardio pulmonary resuscitation, do NOT worry about the breathing part. 1- the movement of the chest during the "push push" part is enough to move air.

Norway just banned tipping for state employees. Sounds like this is unfair to the poor people not receiving tips anymore? No! This is to discourage that there are jobs that pay so bad that a tip is needed to actually make it _affordable_ to work them. (Of course you can still tip out of kindness from your own pocket, which is just fine if you received extraordinary service. It is merely that ordinary service should just be included in the bill.)

This is due to the absurd minimum wage law that says servers can be paid $2.13 an hour...as long as their tips make up the difference to $7.45 an hour, otherwise..the owner makes up the difference. Do you want to know how many of the mom and pop restaurants I've seen that don't pay the difference? Too many to let this continue. ALL wages should start at $7.45..the tips should be a bonus for good service.

In the 80's the US government decided to start taxing food servers on their tips. It was 8% of what you sold with the assumption you were being tipped at least that much by every customer. I worked at many different restaurants throughout the 80's and it really depended on where you worked. At Bob's Big Boy (a small diner chain) I made minimum wage and was lucky to make $20 in tips for a 6 hour shift, way under the 8% of what I sold. When it came time to file my taxes, even though I was considered poverty level, I still owed taxes because of the tips. On the other hand, at a restaurant in Malibu, I definitely made over the 8%. Just another case of income inequality. Plus none of those jobs offered healthcare or any other benefits so I was uninsured throughout my teens and early 20s. It's possible that things have changed for tipped employees, but I doubt it!

Recently i found a bee floating in the doggy pool nearly drowned, i put it on my skin, then in a matchbox, then the matchbox on top of the cooker while i heated the oven, it came to life, had some sugar water and flew away, i was pleased with myself for saving 1 bee, this hurts my whole being.

Unfortunately, I find AT LEAST 1 bee a day, on the ground and confused. I pick them up and try to give them water. Sometimes they just need a minute and they fly away, but many times they die. It breaks my heart. I notice in the winter time they do well if I put them in a container next to a candle...they warm up and then fly away.

Not for nothing, but when you voluntarily take out a loan for school, you need to pay it back. I worked two jobs while going to school to pay for it and was told my work ethic was what landed me my position in my company after I graduated. Stop being an entitled brat who wants everything handed to them and work for what you want. Companies don't want to hire people whose default mode is holding their hand out. You are not 'entitled' to go to an ivy league school to have the full college experience on the taxpayer's dime. If you want something, work for it.

I'm a freaking Pharmacist with similar issues although not as bad I'm sure. I became a pharmacist to provide a better life for my family at the encouragement of my mother (and thankfully I like the job and love helping others), but what most people don't realize is that while I make more money, I also am in debt due to student loans more than most people. I owe over $250,000 in student loans and because of high monthly payments and high debt to income ratio, I can not even obtain a loan for over $85,000 to buy a house. That doesn't get me much of a house in a safe neighborhood if at all that isn't in major need of repair. So I live with my parents or in a cheap apartment. I borrowed the least amount I needed and lived frugal while in school... our system is so messed up. Teaches should definitely be paid so much more!

There was a TV commercial a few years ago for a bank debit card featuring a young woman acting the part of a kindergarten teacher in her class. She said she often had to buy supplies like “Paint, crayons, hamsters...” So she set up her debit card to make an automatic deposit to her savings account in some amount whenever she makes a purchase, as a way to regularly save money for these expenses WHICH SHOULD BE PAID FOR BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. (This adds insult to injury because teachers are so underpaid already.) The commercial made this disgraceful situation seem like it’s a common practice that no one questions or protests against. This is one of the shameful scandals in the U.S. that doesn’t get enough publicity.

A few years ago, two eight-year-old boys got the keys to a family car and went on a joy ride (two separate incidents). The white kid was "high spirited" and "adventurous" so he "borrowed" his grandma's car. He knew how to drive because he was "intelligent and observant". His family joked to media that they would do a better job of hiding the keys. The black kid was described by media as "delinquent", a young criminal who stole his grandma's keys. I have taken many screenshots of things I agree with throughout this dystopian post, but I'm going to say something about this one that will probably be unpopular about this one. The folks on the left, should have definitely been hammered, that ridiculous! But, I used to work at a retail store that sold baby formula... It was our biggest theft item, and it wasn't being stolen by Moms and Dads trying to provide formula for their infants. It was being stolen by a black market formula ring so they could make money. They often targeted specialty formula used for infants who can't drink the regular formula and its was very painful to have to tell an urgently searching mom or dad that our system shows 20 in inventory but the formula their baby needs isn't here because somebody stole it and we are the 3rd place they went to! The folks in the right stealing 90 cans of formula absolutely deserve to be punished... not to harshly, but enough to make them consider another line work!

I knew a girl who got Hep C from her ex-boyfriend. Her insurance would not pay to fix it unless she was very very ill. As far as I know she still has it. Had she gone to jail she would have been treated and it wouldn't be an issue anymore.

This actually happens quite often in the Northwest. Homeless people will commit crimes in October that get them 4-6 months in Jail. This way, they have a warm bed, food and medical coverage to get them through the winter. Living in fear is better than dying slowly from the cold.

That's the truth! My daughter was on antipsychotic meds when she was jailed on a bogus probation violation. They withheld her prescribed meds for weeks, until we finally found a lawyer who was able to rectify the situation. Our daughter is extremely lucky she didn't die from abruptly stopping her meds like that. The jail didn't give a c**p about her!

At last count, California had 33 prisons and I have been to about twelve. Folsom. San Quentin. Pelican Bay. Solano. My wife worked for California Corrections and after I retired I'd travel some weeks when she had to go audit those prisons. Usually one week at each prison. She traveled about 11 months a year. It was fun. She'd go to work and I'd stay at the hotel and drink beer all day. Hic.

ummm think it's fine. I worked in retail where there's lots of tears and I remember being g called back down on the loudspeaker to come back down while I was still in the bathroom crying. I haven’t been to a dentist in over ten years for this reason. While I could go to someone on medicare, I don’t trust the low-ball places to have decent oral hygienists. I brush and floss nightly (most Americans seem not to floss at all), and I scale my teeth with an over the counter scaling tool (inferior to the ones an oral hygienist uses, but hey, I have a damaged root because one of my oral hygienists scraped and dug away at me irresponsibility). I need a periodontal graft; can’t afford it. It’s not covered under even dental plans. The USA is a shithole country because of laissez-faire capitalism.

God I wish I could afford a dentist. I've never even been to one and I'm 30. Eventually getting them all pulled and getting dentures will be cheaper than treating the cavities and rot right now. And yes, I brush and floss religiously. Nothing takes the place of routine dental care.

That's a widespread belief. Even in countries with a health service, like Spain, you have to pay for your own dental treatment in a private doctor. I don't know in the rest of European countries, but that's the way in Spain. Considering that many people get minimum salaries, around €700 or less, and the cheapest dentist charges at least €50 for a simple cavity, it's easy to understand why many people just don't go to the dentist.

I'm from Poland. I have a general life insurrance thanks to the favt that I work. If one of my tooth hurts- I go to any dentist who works for a National Health Fund and my tooth is being done for free. Even if you lose teeth they can give you artificial ones for free :-D

If you arrive in an ambulance, you get seen immediately. Any other method, and you get triaged. If you were in severe pain, but stable, you're going to wait a while. Also, the ambulance has the medication and equipment to begin treatment immediately, before you get to the hospital.

Not really...ambulances are emergency vehicles. The offer on-sight medical attention. In the case of a heart attack, stroke, or serious injury, they save lives. If you use an ambulance to transport you for a minor issue, for example, a cut finger from a knife while cooking, it’s like cutting a flower with a chainsaw. And you are using a limited resource that was desperately needed by the 80 year old woman that fell three blocks away. When I volunteered at an emergency room, there was a lot of ambulance abuse. One guy called the ambulance and complained of chest pains just to get a free cup of coffee in the waiting room in the ER! He wasn’t paying the bill for that ambulance ride. It gets passed on to the rest of us. So no, not a deterrent for seeking help. But if you’re able to call an Uber, you don’t really need the ambulance anyway. Let the guy who just got cut out of his car on the interstate have it. Volunteer at a hospital. The things you’ll learn will change the way you look at healthcare.

Tell me about it! At one place where I used to work, instead of spending the moolah to expand their facilities the company rearranged cubicles to make them smaller. One man had a tiny cubicle, barely big enough for his desk, with a long open side on a corridor that got a fair amount of traffic. They also squeezed two people into cubicles, or removed the barrier between two and shoved a third person in there. The same with my neighbor, she had mental problems and lost her house, we kept trying to get her help and she committed many crimes and the police knew her, but she ended up freezing to death under a bridge at age 71.

Several employees have experienced injuries trying to force themselves to c**p within that time frame...some even experiencing hernias that required surgery. In NZ I never once had to produce a doctor's certificate for taking a sick day. I think it depends on the employer and whether the employee is making them suspicious being sick a lot. Sick leave is generally "unlimited" in most big businesses too. It used to be 2-3 weeks a year, but employers call it unlimited now and then chase certificates if anyone seems to be abusing it.

In Poland, sick leave is as long as it takes, of course if a doctor signs it off, and you get 80% of your payment for all that time. But after 28 days health office gets interested (I think because every sick leave that is longer is paid from government money - up to that point your employer is obliged to pay you your 80%) and they check if you are really sick and not cheating the system. And I always think how our health care system is inefficient poor and overall rubbish... I may have to rethink that!

In Norway you'll have a minimum of 4 x 3 days of sick leave without needing a doctor's certificate, granted you've been working there for at least 2 months. If your workplace is part of what is called IA (Inkluderende Arbeidsliv, directly translated as Inclusive Working Life) you'll have 24 days over a time period of 12 months, maximum 8 days in a row. This is a deal struck between the government and the unions, both workers' and employers'. This is national law, and all companies operating in Norway must abide by these rules. That includes Starbucks and any other American company, so they do know it is possible.

Reading all the comments and all I can do is smile in Dutch. Yeah, we pay taxes. But when we're sick we just call in sick, and the boss says: "Ok., get well soon". And that's it. If it takes us 3 weeks or 3 days to recover doesn't make any difference, every day will be paid. Should we be so unfortunate that it takes us longer to recover there's still no sweat. Employer has to pay us for 104 weeks when we're sick, before he can try to fire us. Of course you do have to go to check ups but the doctor(s) that are treating you are the ones to decide if and when you're fit to work.

I've seen accommodation been purposely built for homeless people with all modcons and special support to get them food, clothes, and jobs -- within weeks many of them were trashed, doors damaged, stuff stolen, drugs found, not turning up for work -- all that work for nothing...not all homeless people can be helped and not all of them want help.

Yeah, I bought MS Access some years ago. At the time I understood it to be a permanent purchase, and I proceeded to use it for the card game I'm working on. When I moved to a new laptop, I discovered that Microsoft won't recognize my software key and doesn't offer Access as a standalone application any more, and also doesn't include it in the one-time-download package of Office. In order to keep using this software that I *already* purchased, I would have to buy a yearly subscription to the entire suite of Office products, most of which I don't need. So I spent a hundred hours switching my development pipeline to OpenOffice Calc + Python.

That's a hardware issue. A possible solution might be to check for updated drivers from the manufacturer's site. If it's a limitation of the graphics card itself you might consider an external graphics card, but they aren't cheap. So it may turn out cheaper to buy a desktop pc with a decent graphics card.

"commitment" may not be the issue here at all. 2 key points: 1. employer must be clear on the expectations of their staff, and hire accordingly. 2. employees must be clear on the expectations of their job, and behave accordingly. (if the boss agreed to let them go home 30mins early, 3 times a week, the boss needs to honour that agreement, or renegotiate with the appropriate notice). Besides, there are MANY solutions to this, that has nothing to do with how "committed" a person is to a job. eg shorter lunch breaks on the days she needs to leave early / longer days on the other days when she doesn't need to collect her kids / other staff can pick up overtime to cover the extra 30mins / ensure she completes her required tasks within her day, regardless of the length of the day. Often, it's about *productivity* while working, vs the hours working. (from a manager who fought to keep my VERY productive staff, who needed some compromises due to outside commitments)

Can confirm, the same thing used to be the case with me and my co-worker. Our boss was so hell bent on keeping us at work until 5pm, eventho our assignments for the day were done, he told us to start on projects for the next day. But my co-worker is an old-school guy, so we ended up doing nothing and started a new project the next day. As his saying went: "Work isn't a rabbit that runs away from you."

If she's been given permission to go home early...it's fine. She could come in 30mins earlier on those days or work it back on other days. I understand that companies do need to be flexible in supporting their employees but it's unfair on other employees that stay for all their shift and have to pick up the slack for her just because she chose to have a kid.

Maybe this doesn’t translate outside the UK. The stereotypes already exist. The right wing media does nothing but call millennials weak and vain, etc. A favourite trope for older people and the tabloids is to compare them unfavourably to the generation of young people who fought for their freedoms in the world wars. Why is sleep deprivation so popular? Why do people brag about it? Sleep is important. It can seriously mess up your health. Just ask anyone who has worked night shifts. I don't understand why some people brag about not getting enough sleep. There is nothing adult about staying up to 3 am and drinking a pot of coffee with a side of Red Bull. The adult thing do is go to sleep at midnight and get enough sleep.

Fiverr is infamous amongst graphic designers for promoting very poor pay and spec work, with the result that most 'logos' designed through fiverr are now produced automatically by smart algorithms. I also know of multiple cases of simple forgery - mass-copying of already existing design work which is passed off to idiots who think you can get a decent logo for $10.

I did that as a mom when I was 28 years old. It was awesome. No. No it wasn’t. It f*****g sucked. It took 5 months to save up enough money to get a place. It wouldn’t have taken so long, but day care is expensive when you don’t have any family to help you. Or to be more specific, your family doesn’t really give a s**t about you or your child. (I’m not being an a*s here. I was actually told this.)

I disagree. Growing up my Dad's job moved us from state to state multiple times. He was not military but I was always asked if I was part of that because of the movement. The military is just their parent's job, this is a sign that someone, somewhere is making it ok that they have to bounce around sometimes while growing up. It's helping them be resilient. This isn't just a scary military thing at all. Military families are traditionally close, my family was very close, I think partly because of all the moving we did together. If it wasn't for my Dad's job I wouldn't have been exposed to all of the amazing different regions of our country.

I'd have no problem with that if it weren't for false positives. Either on part of the sample they used or on a false match. Nothing ever works without error, especially when humans are involved, so this might lead to some poor soul being detected as having something to do with a crime they have in fact never done. (Just to illustrate: I am female and the first results I got were from a guy..mix up, harmless, but it happened.)

A lot of these companies will use your DNA for research and destroy it when they are done (could you imagine storing all those vials and keeping them viable?). They may be required to share it with authorities. You can get more than one result on these tests depending on how the computer algorithm decides to analyse it. This probably isn't super useful for an investigation. I'd guess the FBI would need your 'actual' sample. This would mean there is a window the FBI would need to get it before it is destroyed. Of course, these companies don't need to follow the rules they set. They could just sell your info like Facebook does anyway.

I have seen this in a couple of places. They locality cannot afford upkeep on a (historic) train station building, most of the square footage of-which is not really needed for train-station activities. Most stations don't even have ticket counters anymore, they are just places to wait for the train. It makes sense to rent-out the unnecessary square-footage and not have a city employee take time to unlock the doors.

When I was a teenager my dad was given the chance to move to the USA and the entire family got green cards and social security numbers. I’ve never been so happy that he turned down the job and we stayed where we are. While some of my family did go back in later years for a few months, no one wanted to live there full time and moved to Australia instead. :-)

I feel like most of these are American issues. I live in the USA, and I'm so sick of everything wrong with our country. My 11 year old sister is already worrying about affording college, and I actually felt guilty for calling an ambulance for my mom when I found out how much it had cost. When I go to school, I automatically make a plan for how I would get out of an school shooting. It cost $300 for me to go to Urgent Care and find out I've had Tendonitis in my wrist for 6 months. And, compared to the kids being held in cages, my family is lucky. I'm hoping I'll be able to save enough money to go to college in Canada, and hopefully live there when I'm old enough. For now I just get to sit and watch while my country falls to pieces :(

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but unless you immigrate to Canada you won't be able to avail yourself of most of the Candian public services. Also, the tuition rates for international students are usually 3 or 4 times the cost for a domestic student. And they still have to get extra health insurance or pay out of pocket in many provinces. Personally, I'd welcome you here - but it's harder than most folks think, so I guess start planning early? One of my American friends even married a Canadian after going to school here for years and she didn't qualify for permanent residence until she was in her 40s. She had to keep going to school (as an international student) for ages because she could only get a student visa - and no school means visa is over and she'd have to leave. We need a swap program where a pro-oil/gun/etc Canadian can just trade citizenship with a socialist American. :p

America: Land of the free for only the wealthy and the ultra-privileged. I was born here. I grew up here. I’m in poverty here, after struggling since age 15 to work in the “real world”, where your employer can abuse you to the point where you end up on disability (if you’re lucky; I COULD be homeless and worse off, but I suppose they could still drive me to that point with further social system cuts). What a shithole country. It is getting shittier by the month, as our current dumpster fire administration makes it even better to be rich and even worse to be poor. And yet, people support Trump and his cronies because they think he hates the same people they hate. No, the democrats weren’t fixing this s**t, either. Vote anti-corporate, or you will just be voting for more of the same. Under republicans, it’s like an impending disaster in realtime. Under democrats, it’s a boring dystopia that people are slowly acclimated to.

interesting because im neither wealthy or ultra privileged and am in fact a lower class immigrant from a formerly socialist country. i seem to enjoy the same freedom here as everyone else, and i can tell you that i would much rather live here than the country I moved here from (the USSR). it sounds like you might actually not know how bad other countries have it, possibly because you've lived in america your whole life. am i wrong? have you ever actually experienced life outside the US, and especially in a socialist country like cuba or north korea? curious to know
