If you stop and look around you, you’ll see how many things that are happening are quite a bit off. The rich are now disgustingly rich and detached from the rest of the world. The climate is in shambles. Also, no one bats an eye at surveillance, which is becoming more and more normal. It’s all beginning to look like we are living in a dystopian world taken straight from the pages of a fantasy novel.

The following list contains dystopian gems collected from the “A Boring Dystopia” subreddit. Sad, uninspiring, and absurd, these images are bound to make you feel awful about the state of the world. So, proceed with caution.

Our kid goes to private school. We support public education because when she is surrounded by educated people, she will do better in life. Also as a product of a robust public education system [Massachusetts], it can be done well.

With so many dystopian novels speculating the possible future of our society, there must be one that reflects our current world the best. But which reality do we live in? Is it Gilead or Panem?

Well, if we’re trying to asses that, the most logical place to start the analysis would probably be George Orwell’s 1984. That’s both because of the book’s popularity and how often we hear the word “Orwellian” these days.

New legislation? Demand a fair employer:employee pay ratio and implement transparency so things like employment, pay scale and formal education are all publicly accesssible to hold people accountable? No Timmy, Jennifer makes more than you because she has a degree and you were given this job as the bosses son. In Canada they just keep creating "new" "sub positions" of roles they don't want to pay for. Don't want to pay for an RN, here's an LPN who does the same amount of work (or more) for HALF the pay. Don't want to pay for a lab tech, a lab assistant can do the job for HALF the pay.....and now we have a labor shortage. People want to work, this world doesn't value the efforts of others.

Sorry for ranting but at the end of the day I know that I have nothing without the efforts of other people. Without the efforts of you far away in some other country. We depend on each other, we always have and we still do. Our power to demand a certain standard of living has been stripped by the likes of wealthy internationally connected "think tanks" that literally just pay to change the rules so they can take more from the greater population. I'm looking at you atlas, Fraser, Laurier, Pacific research, BP, nestle, government pundits, everyone in the Panama papers.

What do CEO's actually do? Are they on the shop floor, working alongside employees and customers? Doing the hard yards? No? Then why should they get the big money. The worker at the bottom does the most work, and it's a really simple concept that without them, you the CEO would not get the benefits or the money along with it, as you wouldn't have that job. It's not a communist thing, it's basic economics.

In the desert where I reside, these structures could be constructed on the streets of Phoenix or Las Vegas to green up the environment. Moreover, we could implement them on the streets of Toronto, where trees would thrive even during winter. These structures require minimal upkeep and would bring substantial benefits to society. The added advantage is that you wouldn't have to wait for a decade for a tree to grow; mass-producing these would be highly advantageous.

George Orwell’s 1984 is an exploration of a society that has completely given into a totalitarian regime. It shows how censorship and the lack of free thinking is bound to damage the world. It emphasizes the propaganda, manipulation of truth, and the ridiculous amount of power that the government has over everyone. It does sound a little familiar, right?

The most recent example of censorship getting out of control is the 2021-2023 book bans that rippled through the US. Libraries around the country are being asked to take specific books off their shelves. In fact, 2022 set the record for the most inquiries ever made. And 2023 is on track to break it.

I'm in Canada. I am scared by the number of policy-makers (and supportive members of the public) who want to emulate the US Education Models because they think it is the most 'efficient' and runs on sound 'business principles.' I am scared by the appetite for degrading and disrespecting teachers. Our most important civic institutions should not be run on the same methods as for-profit businesses.

I hate it when some goddamned entitled and delusional MBA sticks their f*****g filthy nose into social programs and services and tries to equate them with business. Business principles only apply to for profit business. They do not apply to anything that is not for profit, such as education and social safety net programs—-things a normal person would NEVER want to be run on such cold, cruel, and inhumane principles as those for the dog eat dog business world. Social programs and services should be run on strictly ethical principles, something f*****g MBAs are not taught.

I don't like this. I just cannot understand why the US cannot do like the other countries and make the citizens pay higher taxes in order to cover the cost of the "free" Healthcare. For the company it's 'just the cost of doing business'. This is wrong. The fine should be based on how much money they should have spent doing it properly, and the cost of repairing the damage.

Exactly, doing it the legal and proper way should be the more financially sound way. As long as any penalties are significantly less than the costs of doing it properly then there is not much incentive to do it properly.

The fines should be calculated based on the company’s or individual’s net worth. Though $50,000 is a lot for the average person, for a billion dollar business it’s just a small cost of business expense. To make the point clear, they should’ve fined them a chunk of their net worth—-and make it an expense they cannot write off on their taxes!

What separates this wave of censorship from others is that this time politicians are the ones stoking the flames. Instead of communities raising the questions directly to schools and libraries, they are getting support from conservative advocacy organizations, which smells a little of 1984.

That is unconstitutional. It’s a violation of First Amendment rights. The only sanctioned exception is for books with inappropriate sexual content for the age group. Books like Lady Chatterly’s Lover, for instance. That’s understandable. But To Kill a Mockingbird, ffs? The staple of middle school literature classes for well over half a century? Florida teachers who haven’t embraced book banning (there are always traitors who drink the Kool-Aid and suck up to the a******s) should start a class action lawsuit against the state for sanctioning the bans, and putting the unjust penalties in place if a teacher has a banned book on their classroom shelves.

Wait til they start showing how cute the grade school age convicts are in the child’s prison’s sweatshop. Listen, a few years ago, republicans loudly and publicly bemoaned the fact that child labor was illegal (yeah, they actually went there), and now look. What do you think will be the next step?

I had no idea "In NSW, there's no minimum working age, and children aged 12 and under can get a tax file number if a parent or guardian signs on their behalf."! In Victoria minimum age is 14 and 9 months, unless the employer gets a licence to hire younger and I think they still have to be at least 13.

Mind you, this sounds more like a 'work experience' placement than an actual job. The kids are learning skills that can help them later in life. Other places in Australia have similar programs for farm kids etc, they just don't pay them.

Many of the challenged books discuss race, sex, and gender. Interestingly enough, though, they are often challenged because of profanity and sexual imagery in it, not politics. So, at least they are trying to conceal their censorship with the thin “oh, think of the children” veil. At least we’re not in Fahrenheit 451 territory yet. But we are getting there.

I feel like this should be obvious, but I've seen so many people show up to work and just.. not.. work. Yes, your primary responsibility is to obviously help the business operate and make a profit (or achieve its other goals if it's a nonprofit, etc.) That's what you signed up for. That's why they're giving you money. If you don't actually work, you're being dishonest and not doing what you said you'd do. Doesn't matter if the CEO is filthy rich and won't be affected much by your slacking off. It's about YOU and your character. Do you try earnestly to keep your promises? Then you should actually work when you're getting paid to work. It's no different than the person who shows up to a potluck empty-handed but still helps themselves to several plates of food. You're not following through on the promise you made but still taking something you have not earned.

    Tim Douglass
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

But the correct answer is that your responsibility (to your employer) is to help them operate and make a profit. Your personal goal and possibly responsibility to your family or self is to earn money. The responsibility of the company is to pay you a reasonable wage for your work.

I looked into the background on this. There IS a bridge, but it was submerged by an especially heavy monsoon. It's also worth noting that the school is a 5-hour walk away, and is a residential school. The students stay in a residence hall during the week and go home on weekends due to the distances involved.

This is a wonderful story. I’m shaking my head over this tweet. People in “first world” nations just don’t get that most of the worlds population lives really tough lives. Safe drinking water, free schools, access to medical services locally, good roads, hygienic homes, voting rights, women’s rights, these are the exception not the rule in 3/4th of the world. These parents know that education is the key out of poverty and their child is going to get it come hell, or in this case, high water!

Idiocy at its finest. The problem is not tipping culture but the lack of fair wages. Greedy companies make millions and billions but won't pay fair. Trickle down never worked. It Was and still is a stupid lie Republicans tell their stupid voters. Unions are the one and only solution to fight for workers rights.

Tipping may have had good intentions, once upon a time, but it became the backdoor method for employers to have the employee pay subsidized by the public. They balance it so the top FEW employees are seen to do really well, while convincing the others their equally hard work was not worthy of a decent wage. It's giving false hope, and it is a deceptive practice.

It's worse: it is a religious-themed bbq chain where I live that doesn't serve beer and is really expensive for no good reason. It feels like a counter-serve place (like many proper BBQ spots around) but they have the employees running around for tips, awkwardly trying to be a fancier sit-down restaurant that's still decorated and ran like a casual bbq restaurant. Honestly the last time I was in one I tipped them because I felt so bad for the workers and I haven't been back since.

Then give them a living wage!!! Cut portion size and end endless refills of drinks would be a start. I'm glad I'm from the Uk because I'm dammed if I'm going to add 20% on top of my bill!!! I always tip, but how some are treated if they can't afford that 20% is disgusting! My daughter lived in America for a year, so that's how I know. She was supposed to stay two years, but hated it there! First world country with terrible systems that shows there's no such thing as "The American Dream" my daughter was obsessed with America and though she has quite a few friends that she visits yearly, she'll never live there and appreciates her home country now!

HAHA, I was not expecting to see this on here. This is a chain of locally owned bbq spots where I live. They are full of religious propaganda, one of the only bbq spots that don't serve beer, and were caught up in a fraud case for some contract restaurant with the State to run a restaurant in a State park a couple years back. The bbq is mediocre but they always win "awards" around here. Oh it's also corporate-greed expensive for no justifiable reason.

What you’re seeing is not, by any stretch, the opinions of the people who created it. It’s instead a response built out of incomprehensible amounts of data that its been fed from the internet. I would chop the front poles so it fell forward and use it as a very large roof to better protect the shacks in front of it. A lot more useful to the people there.

Just not the families currently living there.

Phones make it especially easy to choose instant gratification over long-term benefits. We spend time we could be spending socializing on social media. The likes and the validation we get replaces real-life interactions. Dating apps are also guilty of that. It used to be that casual dating was seen as too instant of a gratification. These days, this has been replaced with swiping only. So, yes, the brave new world is here.

This hits close to home. I recently had to drop the children's health insurance because food and housing are so expensive right now. Yes, we literally had to choose only 2 of 3 of some basic needs. Both adults work at over twice the poverty line each. America's slogan needs to be, "It's never enough."

Strongly disagree..there are several that would not countenance such a terrible thing. Collins, Kinzinger, Cheney (I believe), they just need to make theirs the strongest voices. They are what GOP used to be. I am dem, but see value in shared values.

There was a tree there...and it still makes me happy to see each time I go by, that someone appearantly got it.

UPS driver/Teamsters union member here. At the end of the current contract I'll be making $49 hr, guaranteed. Medical/vision/dental insurance provided by the company; I don't pay a dime, guaranteed. Full pension after 20 years; I'll retire before I'm 60, guaranteed. Paid vacation, guaranteed. Overtime pay, guaranteed. Holiday pay, guaranteed. The only time I talk to my union rep is if my supervisor/manager violates my contract rights, at which point they're held accountable. Unionize people! Don't believe this corporate propaganda b******t.

They always bring up the union dues payment. I worked in a union job. The dues that were deducted from my paycheck were a f*****g drop in the bucket, because I was making a fuckton more per hour than I had ever made in my life. I also had representation if management tried to pull any of the typical management b******t on me. I could call in sick the night before my scheduled work day without having to still set my f*****g alarm to wake up, call in, and talk to my supervisor at 9am. I got regular raises, which increased my salary even more. There were a load of other benefits my union provided that I had never had in other non-union jobs. I’m also smart enough to know that small percentage I paid in union dues financed every single one of those benefits, so was totally worth it to me. Do NOT let union busters try to scare you into thinking union dues are going to cut your pay in half. You won’t even notice them. Besides, the more pay raises your union negotiates for you, the smaller that tiny percentage comes.

Last union job I worked for, I think it was like $4 off every one of my paycheques. They also made sure I got a raise every year, even when I forgot to ask for it myself. So worth it.

My miniscule Union fees got me a nice pay raise for the next 3 years, back pay on the deliberation duration, didn't touch my benefits or my pension, didn't effect my PTO or Holidays. It also will provide me with a good lawyer pro-bono if there is ever an issue at work, I can go right to a rep with any concerns about my employment. I guess they're the problem and not one corporation trying desperately to become a monopoly while putting their employees through a meat grinder and casting them away when they can't take to slave labor anymore.

They have turned into the same corporate viewpoint as the rest of the major corporations. They want the money but are unwilling to provide for their workers benefits that should be a normal part of business. I wish they were more receptive to the workers' concerns, but they aren't.

I'm confused, don't all parents make sacrifices to help their children succeed in life? I'd be more concerned if it said something like "A majority of parents refuse to make sacrifices, financial or otherwise, to help their children succeed in life." We have sacrificed our savings to save up for our children's education, is that shocking? If you think about it, having children is about the worst financial mistake that anybody could make.

I couldn't find this exact language, but a proposal to audit child labor in cobalt mining was voted down in 2023 because Does said they were already doing a lot to ensure there was no child labor in their supply chain, including cobalt mining.

I think, and I may be wrong, but I think that the “for” means they disclose the information in child labour instead of hiding it

I support "mom and pop" businesses whenever I can. It's getting harder and harder to find non-chain cafes, restaurants, shops, etc. these days.

gee i wonder why. maybe its because they suck and therefore cant compete? if you dont have a profitable mom and pop business, it deserves to die.

Every one of those companies, except FedEx and the two banks, are notoriously exploitative minimum wage employers. Don’t think FedEx and the two banks are off the hook either. FedEx works their drivers to death to earn their salaries, and all three of them pay s**t salaries to their entry level employees, who won’t start making a livable wage until they’ve managed to stick it out working for s**t money for what, 10, 15, 20 years? And that’s only if they don’t lose those opportunities to one of the executives’ brats who just barely graduated high school or college, and doesn’t know their a*s from a hole in the wall, much less how to run a bank or a shipping company.

to be fair, most of the money does stay within the local community, its not 100% sent back to corperate. most of those companies are franchised, which means they are owned by local owners.

Wal-Mart came to our town. Within a few years Sears, Shopko, Penneys, Kmart and our local mall all closed. Now there's just Wal-Mart or nothing.

yeah, many of those would have closed regardless of their ability to compete; their corporations simply suck too much.

That's Home Bargains (UK) in the pics. Organized shoplifting gangs of 2 or 3 hit the shops, sweep everything in large bags, and clear out as fast as they can. The police won't show up as there aren't enough police to come for "minor" crimes like shoplifting. My local Co-op has practically everything in theft proof cases now, fr. It used to be just high value items like steak. My local M&S has taken quite a hit, too. People just load up trolleys and walk out without paying. Yes, the cost of living crisis, inflation, and benefits not being enough to live on all contribute to shoplifting. But those are small scale compared to the organized shoplifting gangs.

To be fair, my last position was in an ultra high security area. Like the rooms were all faraday cages, armed guards, all that. Windows were forbidden for security reasons. We had these, and with daylight emulating LED bulbs. Really made a nice difference from the old florescent fixtures.

I can see no logical reason for it. The clear glass windows showed customers what they were buying, what condition it is in, and how much of it is on the shelves, at a glance. This suspiciously looks like they’re trying to hide something. I don’t want my stores to hide anything from me that I am going to pay them my money for. TBH, it looks like a “Potemkin Village”-like store in North Korea that they very quickly trot foreign dignitaries past and don’t allow them to stop and take a look at up close, because behind those pictures are empty shelves.

Or just open the door into a passing cart hard enough to shatter it... accidentally. As long as that happens with some regularity, the cost/benefit analysis will move in the consumer's favor.

All it takes is ONE fanatical a*****e who knows how to manipulate it for it to be used for very evil things. Besides, who says “Jude’s-Christian Values” are good? Aren’t they the same ones that have been responsible for all the wars, witch trials, slavery, holocausts, and massive global suffering for millennia? Maybe AI—-and every human on Earth, tbh—-could use some common sense secular values to follow, instead of obsolete, highly flawed, and downright dangerous religious ones.

But diesel is clean! But British taxpayers were bribed with their own money to switch to diesel cars, after which they were punished for being dirty. The wokes in the last Labour government never apologised, so wokes have little room to complain about a boat not being ruined.

It's just sad that *this* is what they now recognize. When I was in elementary (mid to late 80s 🥲) the 'V' was a "Viola" & I had to ask my teacher how that differed from a violin & it was a really cool learning moment for me.

It’s actually kind of interesting when you look into it. From a study: “Each time they rehydrated with a different drink, and their urine output was measured over the following five hours. After drinking milk, the study volunteers produced less urine (and therefore retained more fluid) than with water or a sports drink (Powerade).“

Sorry, I'm confused. Is OP complaining that the dairy industry is advertising? Or are they questioning to validity of the statement? If the latter, there is (rather tenuous) evidence to back the claim. But it is a little sneaky, as the benefits are very situation specific. Milk naturally contains salt and lactose and can improve hydration when drank after exercise or in extreme heat. But under normal circumstances it offers no additional benefits.

Milk is more hydrating than plain water because it contains the sugar lactose, some protein and some fat, all of which help to slow the emptying of fluid from the stomach and keep hydration happening over a longer period. Milk also has sodium, which acts like a sponge and holds onto water in the body and results in less urine produced. My neighbor is an avid runner. She drinks chocolate milk after long runs. The more you know!

It's less about 'buying' office. It's just how much the campaigning costs. Else Bloomberg would have been President.

if they JUST keep deepthroating that boot, trickle down economics will work, even though it never has before.

As I read it, your right to blockade, disrupt and vandalize is being denied, not your right to protest. Peaceful demonstration is still possible.

not in the uk, our government want to ban the majority of protests because thats easier than fixing the things we are protesting about. the things we are protesting about are all things they f****d up. and now we have a home secretary that wasn't even elected by the people. britain is f****d and its the government that f****d it. let the tories and labour rot in their own filth. the constantly screw us over and like f*****g stupid christmas turkeys people still vote for them.

There was actually no need for this, there are already laws in place providing the protections that this injunction states. It's only purpose is to force the police into action, where they would normally do nothing, and ensure that charges are filed.

I know this is them making a power move, but in some situations to be without fuel is deadly.

I remember some of these morons blocking ambulances from grabbing fuel as they were stuck in the jams. All the protest leaders could do was wring their hands and say how regrettable it was that ambulances happened to be in the way of their protests. Other ambulances were also stopped from getting to the hospital, and one lady was left paralysed after a stroke because of it. On TV the Extinction Rebellion people acted offended for being grilled on it. No self awareness at all. Especially as they then went on to TV to lie that they would never block ambulances.

GOOD! It's the public these eco nutjobs are hurting, not least as they can be punished for lateness though it's not their fault.

The non-“eco nutjobs” are hurting the public worse, dumb*ss. Making our planet unlivable because of their profit margins > disrupting your commute. Cry me a river, bootlicker.
