There are many things that are obviously true, but people still refuse to see them. We can take some simple examples - let’s say, you can know that somebody is being a terrible friend or partner to you. They are literally a walking red flag, but it is what it is because you love them, you have fun together and you just choose to look away.

Well, there are things with similar principles that everybody knows but just chooses to look away - such as that alcohol is no good for us or our phones are just robbing us of our time and attention. So, one Reddit user recently posed a question online asking folks to share things that are blatantly true, but that people still choose to ignore. Scroll through and share your opinion!

One of my favourite quotes about mental illness is along the lines of "The next time someone tells me I need to be stronger and just get over my illness I'm going to ask them to come over and whack then in the knees with a baseball bat, then tell them to walk it off."

I broke my back in 3 locations while in jail. They made me walk to a sheriff's car to take me to the hospital. That was easier than dealing with my social anxiety disorder some days.

Such an array of severity and symptoms to mental health. I have Multiple Sclerosis, which is caused by nerve damage in your brain . I am unable to work mostly because of the inability to retain information for a period of time and extreme fatigue and weakness. I own a gun and should be able to use it to save my life if it comes to that. People who look vulnerable are more likely to be a victim of crime and need protection. I had to list my mental illness to get the permit

Not at all decreasing the seriousness of MS, but it's not classified as a mental illness. It's an autoimmune disorder.

Ignorance doesn't help, people don't understand mental illness, if they can't see it, it doesn't exist. People need to be educated properly. Just because you're smiling or laughing, doesn't mean you don't have mental health issues. RIP Robin Williams....

In the U.S. this used to be under control. Once you "earned" over a certain amount the tax rate went up. Then politicians drastically lowered the rate (Reagan was the worst of them) so the wealthy could amass ridiculous amounts of money. And now all that money is used to bribe not just politicians, but fund lobbyists (to get more money, of course) and buy courts. Yet voters keep putting grifters in office and then whining that they can't get ahead.

This is because people have been conditioned to idolise greed. We don't want to be saved from the unfair system, secretly, we want to profit from it and we idolise those that have mastered the art. Even as their well heeled feet crush us in the mud.

After the worst economical crashes the different countries all over the world realised how bad the amassing of wealth and control was for the economy. They'd seen the damage that people like Pullman and Rockefeller had done by buying up the direct competition and then dictating the prices. So the leading countries founded antitrust divisions within their governments, that were supposed to watch over companies and every buyout of a smaller company by a bigger one was supposed to be stopped if it would thin out too much competition or the buying company would become too big, so the situation we have now with companies like Disney, Nestle, Google and what Elon Musk is doing shouldn't happen... But those offices have either been depowered, like in the USA, and/or have become corrupt and close their eyes and don't intervene.

At the rate of $1 per second, it would take you 12 days to earn a million dollars...and 31 years to earn a billion dollars. The richest man in the world (CEO of the parent company of Louis Vuitton) could spend $1 per second for 6,442 years before running out of money (presuming there was no such thing as interest because, obviously, in reality, he'd never run out).

For years people claimed the automobile manufacturers and oil companies were conspiring to keep the '100 miles per gallon carburetors ' from reaching the market. That turned out not to be what they were concealing at all. The oil extractors and very likely the auto companies knew early on what CO2 was doing to the climate. That was the real conspiracy.

Yup. I was surprised that they actually CUT those muscles. You know, those muscles that do so much in just standing up? And some women are able to walk just two days after this? Just an appendix takes two days of laying down. Guys, really, imagine that somebody took a knife, cut your belly from about from middle of one leg to the other one, pulled a mellon out and than stitched you back. That is c-section. All women after birth, no matter if natural or c-section, deserve rest and care.

I've had many surgeries, including major surgeries (reproductive issues/heart issues.....the latter are newer). I've always been pressured to return to work asap! Forget the fact I had multiple organs removed, or had heart surgery (I'm great now, in regards to my heart. My other surgeries ended for the most part after 7-8 surgeries for women's health issues, culminating in a complete hysterectomy). I've noticed this gets worse with women. I've worked in senior leadership and have been privy to confidential info.....men typically get longer leaves of absence/time off, than women. It's disgusting how people are treated (at least in the US) after surgery.

This is completely true, but never in history has there been such a largely global platform where anyone in the world can say literally ANYTHING they want and some random individual can see it on the other side of the world. It also provides a forum for bullying, spreading widespread insecurities (which, yes, I know can also be done by TV) and other types of media. And while there is some truth to the original statement, social media is also very fun sometimes. I am fans of a lot of famous (if you can consider them that) on the other side of the world and I probably wouldn't know about them without social media.

Those, but also the general loss and negligence of teaching kids/adults how to spot misinformation and how to safely navigate the minefield out there. There will ALWAYS be people who stand on a soap-box and preach the downfall of society and who know exactly who is at fault for their perceived End of Days. Either literally or on a computer. What a safe society needs is people who are able to look at that person on their soapbox, listen for a few seconds and then evaluate their theories, look at them properly and see whether there is merit to it or just plain bs. Which means we need a well-educated society where kids are taught how to read media - be it classics like Newspapers or new ones like social media. That means we need much more funding into schools and child-care facilities, parental help and all that expensive stuff. Looking at the plans for that in the next few years in most parts of the world, I don't see a super-bright future, to be honest.

Things that are harmful to children are generally either heavily regulated (like tobacco, alcohol or age restricted games and movies) or children are taught about dangers in school (like eating too much chocolate ruining teeth). The dangers of social media are widely recognised but neither is happening, we need to start asking why.

I don't know where you live but in Germany, it IS being taught in school. It's not some big conspiracy to keep it on the low - it's being talked about all the time, everywhere. Talkshows, newspapers, radio, internet, in schools - all over. But given that especially schools are right now horrifically understaffed and everywhere social budget is being cut or when not, people protest that "those lazy poor people don't need more money!" (not openly saying but definitely including their children), the problem is that not every school has the capacity to teach it or if they do, not teach it in a way that's helpful. We also need TEACHERS who know what they're talking about, and as I said - understaffed already. Considering German children are at an all-time low when it comes to reading and basic maths, there's room for debate whether we need more Internet-Teachers or better Maths-Teachers. *shrug* We all know we need both, but if you can't have both - whcih do you choose?

Social media needs to be monitored more carefully, or, at the very bare minimum, a system needs to be set up which means you can't have a social media account until you are " x " age. The technology is there to make that happen. Children are being exploited and influenced by social media....

No. There has been a concerted effort by the Republican party over the past 40+ years to defund education. They saw the writing on the wall and wanted to ensure that enough of the electorate was uneducated and, therefore, easily led. The way our system works, states with lower populations have disproportionately more representation in the Senate, and those smaller states are typically Republican.

We could fund all of our needs just by appropriately taxing the rich. We could at least make a start on resolving our many issues if our leaders would sit at a table, list and prioritize the problems of every day citizens and come up with solutions. None of this is beyond reach. We just prefer to idolize the rich and watch the reality show shenanigans of our supposed “lawmakers”. The sane people of America (and there are many) need to go out and VOTE. Please … this time around. Please go out and vote even if just for the one you dislike least

...but you let this big gaping hole that you can poor unlimited resources into remain open, it is called the military. When you start spending your money on useless s**t, just so your budget for next year won't be reduced, then you certainly get too much money, and those money can be spend better somewhere else. Also when you turn the essentials into for-profit businesses you get institutions that aim for just that, profit. and it is a bit naive that optimizing for profit always goes hand in hand with optimizing for service. It is this disconnect between the goals of the state and the service provider that often leads to the act of privitisation resulting in some really bad outcomes. It is when there also has to be money for the CEO, shareholders and commercials in the budget that you have to look elsewhere to cut.

I totally agree with this!! And, the US could save TONS of money by letting countries defend and pay to defend themselves. All that savings would allow for universal Healthcare. We need to allow other countries to handle their own problems. This would save SO MUCH money to help ourselves improve ourselves.

A country should spend in things that benefit their people, that is healthcare, education, infrastructure, etc. But in this particular case... well they have a lot of enemies who would love to attack USA. I do not think that these enemies would be satisfied with a card saying "Sorry we atacked you before. It won't happen again"

The most radical party in Germany is now at 30% approvement. They have more voters than any of the other parties. What do the others do? They try to get them banned. In 1923 the NSDAP was declared illegal, in 1924 Hitler was put in Prison, that gave them the chance to pretend that the other parties didn't want to uphold democracy and would ban everyone they didn't want to complete. Until 1929 the party restructured and grew, between 1930 and 1933 the party gained massive amounts of members and voters. In 2933 they won the elections by a landslide, the rest is history. Now they want to ban the AFD. They do not even try to regain voters from them by looking why people are so disappointed, that they again vote for sich a party. When everything started, the NSDAP had merely 4%. Fighting them instead of working on the underlying problems resulted in the third Reich. The AFD holds 30% approval. And they're doing it again. The NSDAP took 8 years to become the leading party. I see a repeat.

Not just that. You see a rethoric in speaches that is eary similar to Hitler's and proposals for methods for "dealing with the problems" that resembles those of the Third Reich being suggested in America. The democracy isn't as solid as most of us would like to think, and it only requires someone with the right set of skills to hack it and turn it into a dictatorship, if we are not on our toes and aware of the lessons that history should have taught us. If we let ourself get blindfolded we will be vulnerable for a repeat of some of the worst chapters of history.

yep the stock marked crashed about once every 8 years. But for other things, the period is about the length of a generation. My hypothesis is that this is because it is so hard to learn from other's wisdom when you have no practical experience of your own to relate that too. We are about to pass the point in time where the last people who lived during WWII will be gone, and hence the lessons learned from that will soon be forgotten, or at least slip out of the public mind, which opens the posibility for making the same mistakes over, and allow an authoriterian ruler to take over and hack the democracy. The first signs was already there years ago, and it has only become worse since then. You hear Trump paraphrase Hitler in his speaches, and if you analyse his way of acting it is like reading the pages of "The Dictator's Handbook". It is truely scary stuff that he and his gang has planned for your nation that will probably have an effect on the rest of the free world too. Stop it now!

Despite all of the crazy s**t he says every time he opens his mouth, and despite his criminal actions and numerous law troubles, there are those who are blindly, rabidly devoted to him. The democratic national convention is making a huge mistake by not putting forth a strong Democrat opponent, and instead are banking on people's hatred of Trump to win Biden another term. I fear the inevitable s**t show to come.

Because of that, First time homebuyers don't always get good, honest representation. This causes financial difficulty and sometimes foreclosure. But it is so fun to watch the Brits while the brexiters realise this. The latest turn of events was that they were pissed that the EU wouldn't invite them to the table, and gave a squat about their demands, when making new EU regulations. It is like they cannot give up the idea about them once being the empire that could push others around at will and always have it their way. Thinking that you can reek all the rewards, but not chip when the bill comes, was simply so naïve that you wouldn't really think that anyone could be that blind to how the world works. Since Brexit things has played out pretty much how we told them it would go, but they wouldn't listen and now they, somehow, seem all surpriced by how it ended. but surely it can't be any of the UK's fault, it is just the EU that is being nasty to them.

The obvious stupidity was amazing. They would go to a bunch of farmers and say things like "we send £500 million a day to Europe - imagine what we can do for farmers with that." and the farmers thought - great - we will get £500 million a day in farm help. Then they would say exactly the same to NHS workers and they would think - great - the NHS is going to get an extra £500 million a day. Every single group they spoke to for some reason thought they would be getting the WHOLE of the money we sent to Europe for their little group. Reality - no one for f**k all except politicians and their friends.

I hate the "ooh aah religion bad" that seems to be popular on social media these days. In an ideal world, all religion would exist as a source for comfort, community, and order. Because we do not live in an ideal world, there are specific people who manipulate the needs of others for their own benefit, and twist things that should be good. However, there are many churches and places of worship that honor religion as something that should be providing for the people, you just don't see it, because it's the megachurches and religious nutjobs who get publicized.

I agree with you. One’s religion and spiritual beliefs can be a really beautiful, comforting, personal experience, and while there are definitely nut jobs and psychos and terrible religious organizations out there, a lot of people are starting to feel way too comfortable with disrespecting other people’s religions or beliefs JUST BECAUSE they’re part of a religion. Please don’t disrespect other people’s religions just because you personally disagree with the idea of religion or their beliefs y’all….Let’s all try to be more open-minded and tolerant. I could never walk up to a Muslim or Buddhist or Jewish person etc and tell them I think their religion is stupid…….why do some people think that attitude is still ok in 2024? I’m not religious at all but goddamn, let people live their damn lives!

It's the people who use religion to their own ends and not for the betterment of the society in which it exists. Religion in itself is a collection of ideals that are twisted around. Getting rid of all religions won't solve your problem as long as people are corrupted.

The Vatican directly profited off its prior knowledge of the Holocaust by purchasing life insurance companies which served European Jews. After the war, the few people who tried to claim the life insurance were denied unless they could provide full proof of the death. Unsurprisingly, the Nazis did not issue death certificates for the people they murdered so the Vatican kept almost all the money. This is thoroughly documented in "Gods Bankers".

“Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money!” ― George Carlin

The more money working people have, the more they can spend. The more they spend, the better stores and factories do. The better stores and factories do, the better their owners - the rich - do. So it's "Trickle up" economics that would work, not "Trickle down".

The trickle is imposible because the people in the top, instead of permiting it just make their "bowl" bigger. Because the 1% do not care about the other 99%. The only way to end up in that 1% is exploting other people.

It could, but greed (love of money and control) get in the way. Much like communism and socialism don't work, once trickle down, communism, or socialism started to successfully work, a few manipulators would come along and highjack the situation...like we've seen throughout history. It's a shame.

When you already have more money than you can spend in any meaningful way, then adding more money won't change much. It just means that a lot of effort gets converted into flipping some bits in a computer, so one man can brag that he can create a number in there that is bigger than what another man can do. Just storing wealth like that seem so pointless. and please answer this, what is the best thing we can invest our effort into generating: better educated people who are healtheir, or luxery products like fine whine, expensive chocolate or a glasfibre boat that is a bit bigger than the previous one and goes less than one mile on a gallon of diesel?

I'd say it's not necessarily too narrow, but we have a statistical bias. The people who seek therapy are not the narcissists, they're their victims. You can't diagnose people who don't come to therapy. And narcissists don't do that because most of them don't suffer, they torture others. The only narcissists who appeared in the statistics at all, are the dangerous ones, the most extreme cases. No one can say for sure how many are out there, being a torture for their family but since they don't commit crime, they'll never be officially diagnosed.

Narcissistic disorder is one of four main disorder types and the one, that is (¿almost?) incurable. All these disorders are happens with most of the ppl in different severity, there are almost no healthy ppl. We are considered to be a bit in this or that condition, or the mix of several. As I remember from my psychology lessons.

Exactly, this is why pushing up interest rates in response to inflation doesn't work - never has. It could only work if borrowing were fuelling inflation. At times when this WAS actually the case governments refused to respond with higher interest rates and, in fact, lowered them (2008) But when inflation is as a result of sanctions on fuel and less access to wheat (Ukraine since 2022) governments decided that the resultant inflation would be lowered if people were made EVEN POORER with interest rates going up by 1000% from 0.5% to 5.25% (the amount you pay in interest has gone up by ten ie 1000%)

A grown child going No Contact with their parent means that their parent must have done something to break the innate trust a child has toward their parent. It's the child who needs understanding in this situation, not the parent. Children are "programmed" to love their parents, it's what ensures their survival etc. That love is deep and doesn't go away just because a parent was a little mean once. It requires consistent betrayal of the childs trust, abuse/neglect/etc.

I would agree with this the majority of the time, but not every case is like this. I have a narcissistic family member who walked out on all of us (including her parents) because we refused to allow her to continue to gaslight us all. Her parents tried HARD to care for her but wouldn't stand by and watch her abuse her children so she went No Contact 30 years ago.

I had to cut off contact with one of my daughter's because of the way she acted. Bullying me, throwing away 95% of my clothes because they didn't suit me. Bullying me because I had to use a walker and sending me awful messages because I was using one when she saw me. She tried to control my every decision and would gas light me constantly to the extent I tried to take my life. My psychiatric told me she was certain my daughter was a sociopath with narcissistic tendencies and that if I didn't cut off contact with her I would die. My oldest daughter has no contact with her either for the same reason.

It's more when a toxic person is cut from family, it's the toxic person's fault because of their shîtty and abusive behaviour. That person can be a parent, a child, a grandparent, whoever.

Sometimes children are born with inherent problems. Mental or emotional imbalances. It's not the parent's fault all the time.

It goes both ways. Parents also have a natural instinct, and sometimes children go astray despite the best efforts. There's no was to make any rule out of it or tell without any background information what has happened and who needs the support. I say, look at the person in front of you, make decisions concerning your own relationship with them, and keep your nose out of their issues unless asked, and even then be careful not to meddle with the other side. You'll never know for sure the whole story and might become a flying monkey. So keep out of it.

Always be careful with assumption and do a proper analysis before you jump to conclusions. Contact can be cut for a lot of reasons, and though the bond between parent and child can be strong, it can break for various reasons. E.g. everything can have been on fine until a third party entered the equation, and started twisting things. You see this with abusive partners who tries, and often succeed, in isolating their victims from the sorroundings, as said sorrounding is the saftynet the victim needs to fight the abuser. You e.g. see religious groups or scammers driving a vedge in between what was otherwise members of a healthy family. People falling into some sort of conspiracy hole can also make them lost to their family, and I think politics are especially to blame here, as it's designed to divide people. You don't nesesarily have to take any action to break the trust of anyone, all it takes is opinions that is so different that family dinner turns into shoutingmatches.

Yeah, this is just a dumb assumption. Humans are too complex for broadstrokes like this. People go NC for several reasons like religious beliefs, political beliefs, abusive partners, personal lack of responsibility etc. You don't automatically become blameless because you're the child in a parent-child relationship

When are you people going to STFU about Bezos and Musk and all the rest? Their very, very inflated "wealth" tallies, (which continue to reported for the express purpose of feeding the outrage machine and keeping the simple minded masses distracted and feeling powerless) are directly tied to the amount of STOCK THAT THEY OWN. Bezos own roughly 10.5% of amazon stock....we've watched his "wealth" rise and fall along with the valuation of AMAZON. It went from $120 billion when Amazon was valued at $1 trillion, to $260 Billion when it topped $2 trillion, back down to $140 billion...in the span of TWO YEARS. Recent headlines citing that Musk "lost" $200 billion dollars in the span of a few months....because the STOCK CRATERED. They do not have hundreds, or even 10's of billions in the bank. They have STOCK, which most of these billionaires are precluded from selling because they are executives, board members or the public face of said company.........

MLM is like comission, just that you have to pay first. They took the commission sales tactic, that is indeed fair because you don't have to buy anything and mostly just secure a sale, and turned the outdoor salesman who went door to door to do sales, again, with products he didn't have to buy first, and made it into a pyramid scheme. The old salesmen had their demo case, they showed the products, the customers filled out their orders and all the salesman had to do was give it to the company. The company would do the rest, shipment, payment, everything, and at the end the salesman would get his cheque. Now the company does nothing but deliver to the salesman, who then has to secure payment, get it delivered and if he can't do it, is out of money until he can sell it again. And somehow there's never enough money left at the end of all the hassle

That people are inherently concerned about there own image and when we do something stupid and worry about what others think, others are only concerned with what people think of them, and don’t give a c**p about what you did.

I work with a person who says exactly this. "I have main character syndrome." As if that excuses being an unbelievable narcissist. Didn't John Wayne have a quote about that? Would he rather play good guys or bad guys and he said something like, "It doesn't matter, everyone thinks they're righteous." He was very right.

There are still discrepancies between some of these studies so I'd say the jury is still out but we should use alcohol with caution at the least, I'd say.

Whatever benefits red wine has are outweighed by cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, and colon cancer, which have all been linked to alcohol consumption. Genetics also matter, as I know several people who have been drinking regularly for 40 or 50 years and their livers are in relatively good shape.

I mean, yeah, if you're chugging it. But almost everything is bad for you if you overdo it. I don't think a glass of wine with dinner once in awhile is going to do me in. Most things can be done/consumed in moderation.

All of my family drinks; some can go easy, others it has become a large part of their lives. Now yes, I drank around friends when I was younger, but I have never liked it. I'm clumsy enough without adding to that, I'm good. Everyone in my family is absolutely shocked that I don't drink, it's really odd, especially since we all know alcoholism/addiction run in the family.

It's amazing how many commenters have been caught up in the hype. Alcohol is a x9 carcinogen. You need to check out who is funding the studies that give a thumbs-up to alcohol.

Self medication is never the answer be it drugs/alcohol. Irish culture has to change. Good news-drink. Bad-drink. Sober life frowned upon. Alcoholism runs in my family more so on get togethers. Sobriety is frowned on. Family doesn’t understand why I avoid certain times of the year to visit.

Not true. I hear that it is thought that a glass of red wine helps prolong lifespan in some cultures (this is backed by science).

It's not black and white, studies over the years have found some correlations between moderate wine intake and longer life, but most of the populations that feature in those studies are Mediterranean, with a distinctly different diet anyway, so wine is simply a part of their diet and not really isolatable as a good thing in itself.

I mean, we're all still gonna drink, but let's not delude ourselves. The science is sound and that's why health agencies are reducing their recommended intake to 0 alcohol consumption. We know it's bad for us and we should face the truth like adults. Cheers!

If you live in a democracy YOU are the government. Your vote decides who makes policy. Stop voting against your own interests. If you really wanted it, you wouldn't vote for the tool who denies it to you.

This only works in a true, functioning democracy. We no longer have that in the US. We have a corporatocracy where any politician may be purchased for the right price, and where the foulest of liars and criminals can run for president (again).

Yes, if they wanted us to have universal healthcare we would, but the billions of dollars & thousands of jobs in the healthcare industry outweigh changing it over. If they wanted us to have a secure border we would, but instead the federal government is against a state trying to direct migrants to use the border crossings. If the government wanted to tax the rich they would have to reduce the tax deductions and sinch the loopholes they exploit themselves.

It's not like the government is one entity with one brain and one end goal. Yes, the government system is corrupt, but you have to understand that there are hundreds of people making up the government, and some of them want what's best and some of them don't. But the "government" doesn't want anything. Everybody in the government wants something different

And operates in violation of the law, since day one. The condition set by the federal government for allowing a dam and a hydropower plant in a national park was that the power would be sold directly to the people in San Francisco. But now it's sold by PG&E, who spend the profits on executive bonuses and not maintenance, causing many of the big fires in California. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raker_Act

A destructive, incompetent monopoly. Utilities were allowed to be so because of the huge investment in infrastructure. That designation should have been transitioned to a regular company long ago.

Even in the EU, where competition rules, most companies have similar plans, policies and pricing. You might save a bit by switching providers every so often but most companies rely on the fact that most people don't bother. Always bugs me that new customers get the best deals, what about looking after those who've stuck with you for years?!

"Your retina is made up of light-sensitive cells which send messages to your brain about what you see. Everyone has a spot in their retina where the optic nerve connects. In this area there are no light-sensitive cells so this part of your retina can't see. We call this the blind spot."

Yes, but we don't see it. Our brain filters it out. But it is in our field of view and we should see it. But even if you consciously try to see it, you'll have difficulties and might have to cross your eyes to be able to.
