This Comic About Racism In The US Was Made 2 Years Ago, And The Artist Just Reshared It Saying Nothing Has Changed
Two years ago, a white woman went viral after a video was uploaded to the Internet showing her calling the cops on a few black folks for simply having a barbeque. Just a month or so later, another white lady made the headlines when she threatened to call the police on an 8-year-old black girl for selling water without a permit.
Eventually, these racist episodes inspired LA-based artist Obi Arisukwu to create a satirical comic.
“This comic strip may be the only comic I’ve made that dealt with racism,” Obi told Bored Panda. “It was ridiculous how many more [similar] videos popped up of white people calling the cops on black people for doing harmless things like entering a neighborhood pool or operating a kid’s lemonade stand on the sidewalk.”
According to the artist, the worst part about these videos is that they both showed how some white people viewed black folks as unworthy of occupying the same space as them and that the same white people were willing to weaponize the police as their personal bodyguards to make their point.
Sadly, recent events are proving that the strip is still relevant.

“The reason I said nothing has changed is because of the recent video with Amy Cooper, the white woman who called the police on Christian Cooper, the black man, who was bird watching,” Obi explained.
Arisukwu is referring to a verbal dispute in Central Park that might have gone unnoticed as the city — just like the rest of the world — has been preoccupied with the coronavirus pandemic.
However, birdwatcher Christian Cooper pulled out his phone and captured Amy Cooper calling the cops to report she was being threatened by ‘an African-American man’. He then posted the recording on Facebook and his sister shared it on Twitter, sparking a discussion on racism.
Sadly, it’s still relevant

Because of these very recent events
Here’s the video
So, here are the facts: both Amy Cooper and Christian Cooper (no relation) were in Central Park’s Ramble, a wooded area, on Monday morning. Christian was bird-watching and Amy was walking her dog.
The New York City Parks Department requires that dogs have to be leashed in the Ramble, since the plants and wildlife in the area are cultivated and maintained for the public to enjoy. This means that Amy Cooper was violating that rule by letting her dog roam around off-leash (she later told CNN she knew it was against the rules).
Christian Cooper asked her to leash her dog (he said he did it calmly but according to Amy, Christian was yelling at her). As their conflict escalated, Christian started recording it, and you can hear who is yelling and who is being calm and polite. It’s Amy being the unreasonable one.
Amy later explained that she was alone in a wooded area when Christian came out of the bushes, and it freaked her out. She refused to leash the dog and according to Christian’s account on Facebook, he told her, “Look, if you’re going to do what you want, I’m going to do what I want but you’re not going to like it.”
“I didn’t know what that meant. When you’re alone in a wooded area, that’s absolutely terrifying, right?” Amy told CNN.
Christian then called out to the dog and offered it dog treats. According to him, this is an effective strategy to get dog owners to leash their dogs.
Amy then stated that what Christian Cooper said had been a polite request turned into a conflict. As some reporters pointed out, that’s quite strange for someone who is scared for her life.
In return, Christian started recording, and the rest is history.
It got the lady fired and she lost her dog, too

Police said that by the time they responded, both of them were gone.
In the fallout, investment firm Franklin Templeton quickly announced it had fired Amy Cooper, saying, “We do not tolerate racism of any kind.”
A group called Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue said it had custody of her dog for the time being. The pet could be heard coughing in the video after she clenched it by the collar with its front legs off the ground.
“One would think that after the original Permit Patty video and the many other viral videos that came after, these white people who tend to call the cops on harmless black people would’ve learned by now on why that’s not a good idea,” Arisukwu said. “As a black man, it angers me. As a logical human being, it’s downright perplexing.”
However, the artist is happy — and most importantly relieved — that Christian Cooper was able to walk away with his life. “Too many of my brothers and sisters have been wrongfully murdered due to racism. The most recent names of those we’ve lost are Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd.”
“We need justice,” Arisukwu added. “We need change.”
Here’s how people reacted to the whole ordeal

Why no one is talking about the fact, that calling cops can be life threatening. They are like assassin service in some dictatorship country or what? Who gives them right to harm other citizen at all? What kind of twisted coutry it is?
I agree. In the US even if there was reason I would really hesitate to call the cops on any black people. They might wind up dead!

I know - that poor dog didn't do a damn thing wrong and that is what she does to some creature she is supposed to love? Is supposed to be so concerned gets exercise? As for the rest of her appalling behaviour - yeah she felt so 'threatened' she went charging up to this poor man and got so close he had to ask her to back off! The whole thing infuriates me. It should never happen. That woman should never be allowed in the park again, or own a pet. All that being said, can we please use some other name? My name is Karen. I'm from Zimbabwe brought up in a multi-racial environment at home & school. I now live in South Africa - not by choice! I'm sad to say racism exists here big time. The black & indian peoples are often worse than whites in their racism ... everywhere. At the hospitals is where that attitude really freaks me out! Black empowerment job selection should be left out of health institutions. Makes me soo mad & soo sad! We all have plenty of challenges just to survive a failed economy and serious corruption. Why do people have to compound all that by behaving soo badly? Be kind to one another!! I don't deny there is a bad element is every race. I've been on the receiving end of violent home invasion & robbery & ...That element in society will always be there, sadly. Look at countries like Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland & Scandinavia - they've got it right !
So sad but, unfortunately so true. Most humans just have a desire to feel "better than" someone, anyone else
People can start with themselves.

B***h needs to be in jail. Felony false police report. Misdemeanor hate crime. Misdemeanor animal abuse. Dude was kind of a douche for trying to steal her dog, he's not faultless, but it looks like he was just trying to make a point. So while it explains why the woman was set off, it doesn't excuse her rotten racist behavior.
Can someone please tell me what happens in the video? It's not working
Basically you hear the man asking her not to approach him and then she freaks out and calls the police saying "an African American man is threatening me" while choking out her dog.

It was digusting and I wanted to drop out. I remeber it like it was yesterday. Also, I am now SCARED of white cops. I don't want to wind up dead on the street just because I ws walking to my car with my mom. Digusting.
I wonder how she felt watching that video, seeing her own actions as they now appear to the world
It's time the police stopped protecting their own and significant punishment was given. This latest ex-cop had so many complaints against him already, including deaths! Why wasn't he at least fired, if not in jail or a secure psychiatric unit? !
I know that we are far from perfect in the UK - Stephen Lawrence comes immediately to mind, though that was white boys who murdered him, it still took a long time to get justice. But America seems to have made it a matter of pride in how badly they treat their PoC, both the police and the public. Obviously, it's not everybody, but it does seem systemic, permitted, and encouraged. Now the world is seeing it, again. Will anything change? Probably not with Racist in Chief in power, waving his own private army against anything he doesn't like. I don't know what the answer is.
SO glad I come from a mixed race family and lived in an immigrant neighbourhood....
Simple solution would be to start fining these folks that call the police for absolutely no reason. "The man is threatening my life", really Karen?
Let's be kind and pay attention to Karen Johnston who is posting in these comments about how much she is being affected by the misuse of the name Karen. We don't have to perpetuate something that really only belittles the problems it's supposed to highlight.

Now do a cartoon where a couple of black women at a Popeyes chicken tear the wigs off each other because one called the other a "ratchet a*s ho," since we're dealing in lazy stereotypes.
I wonder if all, white people remember, black people were slaves, do some research, er how families were torn apart, suffering, thousands were murdered, the end of slavery, was not the end of murder, police officers have murdered, countless black people, many were innocent, they shoot to kill, because, they are racist, Wish people who are racist, would read history, and walk a mile, in their shoes !!!
Im gonna start a petition for all racist and sexist (possibly homophobic and transphobic to) become an arrestable crime. its just as bad as throwing rocks of assulting. words hurt to.
Poorpeople in america have much more incommon with each other than the rich corporate owners despite skin, origins , what ever. Some is exploiting race division for sinister gains, and siphoning away all the wealth created by millions of underpaid american workers on all levels. Racism is also a tool of control
Madguins screenshot Twitter post in the article abt feeling like they were in a third world country with a mask on made me have to comment. Haha I hope they're black. Would be hilarious that they have the same "better than you" mentality they get from whites. Americans really should just bond over all having delusions of grandeur. Love it when they do the "I can't believe this would happen in America" song & dance. They elected a money-grubbing idiot, a huge % of population counts COVID-19 not being real/dangerous as 1 of many backward-science-is-a-lie beliefs, their 1st world healthcare system is rubbish - having 1 of the highest COVID-19 death tolls & it takes a black man getting murdered by a white man every couple of years to remind them they haven't really made any progress beyond ending slavery. Yet they want to be seen as a superpower, a beacon to the world when they go dark so easily? Whatever.
This is a good example of a racist white woman who feels threatened by the mere presence of a black man. Then there are racist black people who feel threatened by the Confederate flag. What's that flag going to do to them? In both instances, they are reacting to the way they have been raised. As long as parents teach their children to "feel threatened" by non-events, racism will flourish.
This is what I think about this whole situation: His race should have never been brought into the phone call because that situation could have ended tragically. However, I was raised to believe that if a situation wasn't actually threatening you then it was none of your business. He should not have said anything to her. However, I do believe that she should not be able to have a dog because she almost killed the dog. People need to mind their own business and people also need to learn how to follow the rules.
The dog was off leash in Central Park where all of the bird watchers are, this is not allowed for a variety of reasons.

Load More Replies...SERIOUSLY??? The woman straight up LIES on the phone to the police while choking her dog - are you really going to believe her account of what he said before the filming began? He admits to the dog treats which he uses as a method to persuade owners to put their dogs on their leads. He might not be the park warden but why should they be allowed to flout the rules? It's hardly sinister or weird. In my local park I get fed up with stupid people not keeping their dogs on leads - a requirement from April to September due to young wildlife. These rules exist for a reason. She was also far from being scared - she went up to him in a very intimidating manner.

Load More Replies...African american here. I have never been segragated against in the mall or workplace, but I have been racially abused in 6th grade. 6TH GRADE!

LADY PLEASE LET GO OF THE DOG YOU ARE HURTING IT PLEASE THE DOG DIDN'T DO ANYTHING
Load More Replies...Stringent punishment may be the only way to stop these racists abusing the police as their private assault team when they don't like being called out. I'm impressed her employer took the right action.
Load More Replies...That's like saying domestic violence will never end, until both sides stop.... One is a victim, one is not.
Load More Replies...If she had been black, and the birdwatcher white, he'd have possibly shot her and got away with it. When will you stop accepting the truth and defending the white racists? ! You're actually saying, 'poor white folk' ?!?!
Load More Replies...Except the woman made a point of reporting "an African American man," not a stranger who was making her feel threatened. If it were the latter, she'd just be a POS, not a *racist* POS.
