Woman Tries To Use Daughter’s Autism To Feed Her Own Sense Of Entitlement, Gets Served Divorce Papers

29

We’re living in an age of entitlement: A world filled with Karens who will say or do anything to get what they want. And often, just when we think some human beings couldn’t possibly stoop any lower, they go and prove us wrong… Like one mom who showed her true, vile colors in the toy aisle of Tesco’s.

It began as any ordinary family shopping trip and ended with her husband filing for divorce. He’s shared how he witnessed his wife spewing the most terrible things about a little girl in a wheelchair, and trying to use their own daughter’s autism diagnosis to get her way. The man says he has never been so disgusted in all his life.

“Entitlement is fear of frustration”: the experts explain

Entitled parents breed entitled children, and entitled children grow up to become entitled adults. It’s a vicious cycle that can be hard to break. But experts believe it is possible.

“The best way to not have an entitled kid, and I can be concrete about this, is to make sure you don’t take frustration away from your kid. Or to make sure there are literal doses,” says Dr. Becky Kennedy, a parenting expert. What she means by this is that entitlement is fear of frustration.

“You know when you get frustrated when you want a shirt, and your parent says no. When you want to play with blocks, but your parents say you have to wait. When you ask for a phone, and you’re told, ‘Yeah, no way, you’re eight.’ Whenever you want something and you don’t have it, you’re frustrated,” explains Kennedy. “It’s actually about your body never learning to tolerate the frustration of not having something.”

When it comes to entitled adults, Kennedy says they too are frustrated. And it’s highly likely they have the coping skills of a toddler. “Or worse, they’ve had a life where someone has shut off the frustration,” she adds. These adults have always had someone make things easy for them, and have learned this is the way the world works.

Another parenting expert Dipesh Patel, says it’s often second-nature for parents to want to help their children.

“I think as parents we have an inherent response when we see our kids struggling with hardship. It’s not only a psychological response but very much a physiological response as well,” Patel told Upworthy. “However, when we’re able to identify these moments as actual learning moments, I think parents might also be able to reframe their own thoughts.”

The expert says that it’s important for children to learn how to work through their discomfort and difficult emotions or feelings without having an adult always rescue them.

The team at The Parent Cue say one of the main reasons to break the chain of entitlement is so that your children can have gratitude and joy.

“Entitled people experience very little joy. Because gratitude is absent, so is delight. It’s so very hard to find pleasure in what you have because you had it coming to you, it’s yours, and you live in a quiet fear of losing it,” they explain. “Entitled people fight so hard to get what they want that they can’t imagine life without it. That fear alone robs them of any joy.”

People weren’t surprised that the husband had finally seen the light
