50 Of The Most Interesting And Beautiful Old Things That These People Have The Pleasure Of Owning
Many people like things that smell brand new and can be unwrapped from plastic, meaning in reality, they just add to pollution of our planet. But some people specifically prefer the items that have been touched by history and are commonly referred to as antiques.
Antique objects often bear an extra value thanks to their aesthetic or historical significance, and they can be defined as any object which is at least 100 years old. Meanwhile, vintage and collectibles are described as items that are “younger” than that.
And while some are born antique aficionados, real collectors spend their entire lives learning the subtleties of this miscellaneous profession. Below are some of the most incredible examples of antique objects and goods posted on the r/Antiques subreddit, where every member of the community is an antique dealer at heart.

The Lenox Spice Village. My Grandmother Bought This For Me 30 Years Ago And It Has Been In My Parents Storage Shed Until Now....
I don't know what the big dill is. I don't have the thyme to be remembering the address of the aunt Rosemary. It's easier to just think she lives nowhere near that nut meg.
they sell for $300-400 on ebay with free shipping. One type of Lenox that has kept its value when most is pretty worthless now b/c it was over manufactured in the 80s.
I used to have one of these but all of my stuff was lost many years ago and now I have nothing important.
I'm not sure what the laws are on Bored Panda but I'm willing to sell mine and it looks exactly like the pictured one.

I've been there! That particular one is at the Palafoxiana Library in Puebla, Mexico...
Bored Panda reached out to Dr. Lori Verderame, the Ph.D. antiques appraiser who’s an internationally syndicated columnist and an author with 30 books to her credit. Dr. Lori specializes in helping people make money with buying and selling tips, as well as showing them how to spot valuables at thrift stores, charity shops, flea markets, estate sales, etc. and flip them for profit. She also runs a widely popular YouTube channel with 130k subscribers where she shares various tips about antiques.
Dr. Lori explained that “an antique is an object that is 100 years old or older. I determine antique status by looking at materials, condition, and design. I appraise an antique's value by comparing it with other similar items and using my decades of museum and appraisal experience to provide a value,” the antiques appraiser commented.
Turns out, Lori bases her values on actual sales records where similar items have sold recently. “I use my love of antiques to appraise value and value differs based on the type of object appraised. Many factors determine value depending on the type of object presented,” she explained and added that the most valuable categories of antiques typically include fine art, antique furniture, and antique and vintage fine and costume jewelry.
Picked Up A Victorian Style Cathedral Birdcage Today. It’s 7’ Tall With The Base! Never Seen One Like It
Probably a final work for a wood craftsmanship student, i don't know the name in English but it's a piece that you have to make to show your skills at the end of your learning journey.
Masterpiece. The word is so often used as a metaphor for any truly great work or crowning achievement, however, its true meaning is nearly lost on most modern people. In order to prevent confusion with its pop-culture meaning, sometimes "diploma work," or "reception piece" is used.
Load More Replies...These sort are mostly decorational, I keep plants in my collection of bird cages.
Load More Replies...It’s Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris, and as crazy as this might sound I have one identical to this. Picked it up from a Belgian antique shop just over a year ago. I would never keep a bird in it but someone must have at one time as there were a few tiny feathers at the bottom.
I probably use this for ornamental purposes only. It seems better to have a faux bird inside -- they won't make a mess, haha.
And they’ll be much happier than their live counterparts.

This could be in a horror film....or something by Jane Austen. Win win. Lol
The only reason it's being called Edwardian is because of the original reddit poster; they bought it from strangevintagecustom on instagram who is selling antique clothes from the 1960's-1970's. Basically this dress is from the ~70's and not Edwardian. I'm a bit of a fashion history nerd so sorry for the rant.
An Old, Metal, Pocket-Sized Grocery List!
I remember these! My mother used one, back in the day. She’d keep track of how much the groceries cost with one of those palm-sized red counters with the white buttons you clicked to count off the cost of an item in dollars and cents—-remember those? To jog your memory, or as a first look for you, here’s a link to a picture: il_570xN.4...9_r1nc.jpg
It amazes me how in the past, we had ways to do things that naturally conserved resources. In this case paper. But then the trend went to ease and convenience, but at a cost environmentally.
In Sweden they also had a strorage for receipts as the store was owned by the customers and gave back if it was a profit at the end of the year, calculated via the receipts. Still does but now digitally.
When asked if people are getting more and more interested in antiques, Dr. Lori confirmed that it’s true and added that young adults are particularly interested. “Because we can buy all types of antiques with ease now online, people are enjoying the thrill of the treasure hunt for antiques as well as the excitement of selling them or keeping them.”
“I show many examples of how I find the money for people on my YouTube channel series called Real Bargains. Young adults—my fans—are interested in antiques and vintage items because they are well-made, unique and interesting, and are conversation pieces,” she said.
“Many realize that they can buy a vintage or antique object for very little money and use my tips to flip for profit or keep it for their own collection and enjoyment. Many people are interested in antiques because of the memories they spark or for the connection to a bygone era,” Dr. Lori concluded.

It's so surprising that many people don't realize what they have. They sell it dirt cheap because it's "ugly". Are they nuts? It may be ugly to some people, but is actually valuable.

Photographed In 1974, Freshly Excavated 2000-Year-Old Terracotta Warriors Still Showing The Original Color Scheme Before Rapid Deterioration
I never knew they used to be painted. Makes perfect sense, just never thought about it. Such beautiful colours!
Buried for 3000 years...oxygen and light do not agree with them...
Terracotta warriors were, at least, influenced by Greeks https://www.history.com/news/greeks-may-have-influenced-chinas-terra-cotta-army
Did someone remove the paint since then? Contemporary photos show unpainted clay.
They said the paints deteriorated after excavation.
Load More Replies...Environmental change, micro-organisms and soluble salt are what archeologists have identified as culprits to the discoloring of Terracotta Warriors. The temperature and humidity underground function as the shield of the figures' colors. Once unearthed, the surface quickly dehydrates and flakes off, which is truly regrettable.

1897-1898, First Edition, Edgar Allan Poe -Poems And Tales. Found It At A Used Book Store.
A USED BOOKSTORE? As I said in an earlier post some people just don't realize what they have on their hands. You are so fortunate. I hope it has some info about what number printing this was for the first edition.
Sorry, sweetie. 1897-1898 would not be a first edition Poe. He died in 1849, and had already published several of his works—-though the very earliest were limited in number and sound a lot like self-publishing. Still, THOSE would be first editions, not a collection assembled together nearly 50 years later.
my good friend's father found a 1st edition, SIGNED To Kill a Mockingbird at a garage sale for 25 cents. Paid for his college.

When I was in high-school one science class visited a uranium mine!!! The man who gave them the tour (?!) Had worked there for many years and his voice sounded like Daffy Duck. When they left the mine they were given a little memento to take with them. A pill bottle size of uranium dust. Its yellow in color incase you were wondering. They brought it to class, and our science teacher's husband was a geologist who had a Geiger Counter. She brought it to school the next day and measured the stuff. 😵😲 Oh boy, was it radioactive ☢! Called her husband immediately. He came to the school immediately to confiscate it. He called the appropriate government department. Needless to say, no more souvenirs.

My great-grandfather took photos like these. (They're actually postcards). We still have a picture of his daughter (my paternal grandmother) dressed up in a Statue of Liberty costume. (We're Australian of English heritage, so not sure why she was dressed up in an "American" costume, but still. That story has long disappeared - she died in 1987 and the picture was taken in the early 1910s - can't recall the exact year, but she was about 12).
For a scary second, I feared one of these photos was of posed, dead children.People did that, then, because otherwise, they wouldn't have any picture of their child. Specialist photographers took pics of deceased people, who were often 'naturally' posed via rigid supportng contraptions. Anyway, phew.
It's so odd that people didn't smile in old pictures from that era. Not even children.
There is a reason why they don't smile. They would have to stay in position for a long time for this type of pictures. Smiling for that amount of time would be too long, without changing the face position, that would be resulting in giving a ghost-like blurry effect to the pictures.

No, not 1835. That’s 185 years ago, so this piece would be way too fragile to actually put on your bed. Even 1935 would be too old to use. It has to be a recent reproduction—-and most likely not handmade, unless from a craft kit. The design is too symmetrical and perfect. Looks machine printed/woven. Handmade would have imperfections. Sorry sweetie, the person at the estate sale who told you it’s from 1835 was a big liar.

The "Swastika" emblem is an ancient hindu good fortune icon and nothing to do with Nazi propaganda; that came later and was a perversion of it's true meaning. It is quite appropriate here.
Where I used to work they had very old Hindu tapestries. We freaked out when we first saw them because the hospital was owned by two Jewish families. The Nazis reversed the direction the symbol faced.

I guess for some the gameboy colour counts as an antique... Makes me kinda feel old though :D
Not a gameboy colour, just an original gameboy with red casing. Can tell by the grey surrounding the screen.

Makes sense. I grew up in the 70s, so I've collected 70s clothing, I know it, I like it, and I'm in at the ground floor. Plus I can wear it ☺️

Found This In The Wall While Gutting My Bathroom. Still Sharp!
Most likely a practical one. Old bathrooms used to have cabinets hidden in the walls. Most have been forgotten in a renovation. And what kind of murderer would hide the weapon in its original case?

My uncle and grandfather were both builders. My grandfather was also an architect at one time, and designed and built houses. My uncle was a construction worker who worked on large buildings. Both of them were also Masons. They both said that a long time ago, it was a tradition for the workers to hide objects in the walls before sealing it up. It was supposed to be good luck.
Some bathroom cabinets used to have slots in them that you were supposed to use to dispose of used razor blades, the flat "safety razor" kind. Presumably, there was an empty space behind the cabinet, where the razors fell and stayed until they rusted away, or the wall was knocked down. Now I've never heard of a slot large enough to dispose of a huge straight razor like that, but maybe it was something similar.

Take the plants off it!!! Even with the saucers and the rug (hopefully) preventing direct spills, you are creating a microhumid climate which will do terrible things to the wood in the long run.
