Early April in the oak groves around Stockholm. Walking by, at a glance you see nothing but the mat of last year’s brown leaves. But kneeling down on the ground you see a different story – the forest floor is alive with action and drama. Wood anemones are rising everywhere, tiny creatures with the faces of dragons and the bodies of dancers. Every one is unique: some are shy and others boisterous, some gracious and others wild. They seem to laugh, hunger and celebrate the sunlight.

Every year in early April I carefully step around on my knees on the muddy forest floor with my camera, trying to catch this drama of rising anemone buds. They keep surprising me. By late April, the anemones have grown up and taken over the forest floor completely. This is when most people notice them, but by then they have also lost their individuality.
