So my parents own 2 properties, one of which they live in, and one of which they rent out. Regarding the rented house, my brother and his wife (my SIL) rent the top suite. My father is currently seeking tenants for the bottom unit. As english is not his main language, he has asked me to assist him with finding a tenant.

What does this entail? I am to create a listing on a popular website to seek tenants. However, he has asked me to put the actual address and his phone number on the listing as well. I disagreed with the last part.

Instead, I’ve been corresponding with prospective tenants over email. Only when they feel like a potential good fit, I’ll provide the address and phone number, and invite to a viewing. Keep in mind that there are current tenants still occupying that bottom suite, with all their belongings.

Why did I disagree to freely post the address and phone number? For SECURITY REASONS. There are all sorts of “interesting” people on the internet, who may not have the best intentions. Imagine what they can do if they have the actual address and phone number.

My brother also works shift work. So some nights, my SIL will be home alone. I just want to PROTECT her. Better to be too safe than sorry.

Also, the bottom suite isn’t in the best shape. We havent had too many people interested in renting. My father got worried about not making future mortgage payments, and has jumped to conclusions.

My father can be quite reactive, and seeks blame on people often times. And of course, he has blamed me. Why? Because the address and phone number weren’t posted with the listing, to which he feels has jeopardized finding a tenant. He yelled and demanded that I do it…to post his cell number and address direct on the listing.

I’ve tried to explain my rationale, but he’s still fuming, and not listening. Just yelling and berating me. We have had the same disagreement in the past. Perhaps it’s a Boomer vs Millennial way of doing things? Yes, it’s his house legally, but times change. AITA for refusing to help my father in his way, but helped in my safer way?
