British Hair Awards 2016: This Finalist Afro Collection Is A Gorgeous Modern Tribute To African Culture
When it comes to hairdressing, Lisa Farrall is one of the best in her field. Her collection, Armour, won first place in 3 categories at The Black Hair Awards and was also one of the finalists in the prestigious British Hair Awards 2016.
Armour (makeup by Suhyun Kang-Emeryshot and shot by Luke Nugent) is a tribute to African culture. It represents beauty and strength, which is usually difficult to capture.

I got this far and I have to say I don't see why they all had to have such psycho contacts, or why so many were practically naked. I thought this was a hair exhibition... As for the hairstyles, most of them are very artsy and cool, some seem dangerously flammable :D The white markings on the faces/skin are very beautiful, maybe the high point for me. This one I'm commenting on is very freaky though, especially the metal links in the hair. Like a female version of Data and that's where you peel the android's skin off to get to the circutry :D
Just why all the blue and other contacts...makes the models seem less human why their eyes look fake...
Going to agree with everyone else who didn't appreciate the contacts. LOVED the hairstyles, but the contacts were a distracting, instead of supporting, feature.
Stunning!!! But I don't get why the color lens? That's too much extra
Agreed, they could have done without. Its a celebration of African Culture, not western. Lose the vampire eyes.
Maybe it's meant to be a futuristic take on it, or something, but yeah... I'd rather see their natural eyes. Brown eyes, hazel eyes, etc are beautiful, they should be celebrated in a society which praises European-like pale blues and green, above all.
yeah because vampire eyes are so western? I reckon the contact are part of the concept and they work well with the futuristic&traditional ensemble.
the color lenses were used to draw attention to her expressions and overall look. They compliment her skintone, hair and face paint+ gives those girls a futuristic feeling- it's tradition mixed with future, nothing uncommon in this world. If they disliked it, the girls could have refused to wear contact lenses. Also, blue eyes aren't strictly western. Coloured contact lenses are popular among many cultures. The girls' face would have looked bland without them, you wouldn't have seen their natural eyes under the hair and face paint. You need to think out of the box to understand the use of lenses.
But, but, but... what about "cultural appropriation"? Funny how that only seems to work in one direction.
also double post and idk why, sorry!
cultural appropiaton in creative contests..has no real place. You can pay tributes aka show your respect to several cultures through your work but hair is a medium used to present your ideas, the models are just part of the presentation ( just like fashion models- their appearance doesn't matter. The fashion creations are the focus hence why models are required to be skinny af- they're like those dolls in shopping windows. Everyone knows they're there but they don't really matter)<my opinion. If people want cultural appropiation, do albinos have a place then? They don't look african with their pale skin. :^) :^) *takes this with a pinch of salt*
I love all this <3 But I don't see the point of the blue lenses...
I loved everything about these pics. I feel that the blue colored contact lenses draw attention to the face which leads to more attention for the hair.
