10+ Things That We Realized After Spontaneously Adopting A Dog From A Shelter

Hello, I am an illustrator based in Moscow who loves drawing comics that feature personified cats. Yet this time, the story is not about the cats.

Today’s story is about my beloved dog, and how we took her from the shelter to nurture her into the joyful and friendly dog she is today.

Getting a dog (or another animal) usually isn't something that should be done spontaneously but this time it worked out and I'm really glad it did. And I also love the story and the illustrations.

l adopted three animals spontaneously. first the most aggressive labrador ever seen, guy working in shelter was telling about him, that he was mostly in cage to keep other dogs safe, next day he was mine. he lived happy life, chew all wooden furniture, slept next to me every night, swim in lake every day and died peacefully. took two blind kittens from street, now they are beautiful fluffy girls. couldn't save their eyes, infection was too serious, but they are beautiful, they like hunting, bringing ugly bugs from balcony, sitting on keyboard when l'm working etc. :) so, i want to say that spontaneously taking animals can work, but only if you are not caring about materialistic things, like expensive furniture or vases :) and if you have some experience.

This is our dog Shilo that we rescued 4 years ago. It was just after we lost another beloved dog and he just came into our lives at the right time. He a beautiful Border Collie cross and he is so playful friendly smart and loving and will do all kinds of tricks most of which he taught himself, to get attention. He is a wonderful example of how adopting an animal is a great idea and I would recommend that anybody do it. This is a picture of him playing in our garden. Ahw, so cute! I love black dogs! Mine was not adopted from the shelter, but from our neighbors who found her on the highway. Never did find out what Happened, but she sure was scared for a long time. She became my very best friend, she was the greatest. Still miss her, she passed away 16 years ago. Will miss her forever.

My husband and I were just discussing how our rescue, who we have now had about a year and a half, is a totally different dog from the one we adopted. She's happy, spoiled, and loved beyond belief. I sometimes wonder if she even remembers where she started (I almost hope she doesn't). It's true what the author says, we CAN'T fix everything. But bringing joy to just one creature who was neglected/unloved really IS something!

This is seriouely cute :) I have 2 black dogs. Both adopted. Both with unknown pasts but certainly bad ones given their fears (one of them is scared to death of children). They are the best, and I wouldn't change them for anything <3 IMG_7717-5...1b38f1.jpg IMG_7717-5bab8c41b38f1.jpg

The last thing I wanted or needed was a dog; especially one that had been starved and abused. Or so I thought. Once I witnessed how pitiful she looked, I picked her up and carried her home, cradled in my arms and promising she would never be hungry or harmed again. Now, six years on, she is a treasured member of the family and happily spoiled by the entire household; and my constant shadow and companion. Her quiet presence has changed my world for the better. Please, if you have the opportunity to save a suffering animal, put the possible "buts" and "what ifs" aside and take the chance. You never know, in doing so you just may be saving yourself in the process. 15193485_1...470046.jpg 15193485_1070235706433197_5959546166512231145_n-5bad170470046.jpg

A fantastic story, beautifully told. Some of the drawings remind me of my current rescue. An older, badly treated dog who has taken a longer time to come out of his shell than our previous rescues did. He is improving though and it is heartening to see each brave step he takes. The day he let us tickle his belly for the first time was so special. He was bouncing and jumping across our kitchen recently - even though he has dodgy knees! A beautiful, glossy coated boy who will always be much loved.

Sounds like one of the two cats I adopted! One was (and remains) super friendly & cuddly. The other...not so much. Hid under the bed for weeks, finally got lured out & started to be ok. Then hurricane Sandy hit, and we got wiped out. Thought she’d never come around (the other thought it was great fun, she got a car ride!). Three days (!) later, she came out and climbed on my bf! She’s been a cuddly, scritch-loving, treat begging, absolutely lovable and incredibly loving kitty. The whole adoption set me back less than $40, with an older cat discount and break for taking two. Best money I ever spent...money can buy happiness!

After my husband had a stroke, many years ago, we had to move to disabled housing. After the first year there I knew something was missing. We had 1 dog and 3 cats at our home and couldn't keep them as we were homeless for a while. Then one day I decided to adopt a kitten thinking it would fill our emptiness. I was determined to get a kitten until I walked in the shelter. There sat a 6+ yr old cat the walked right up to his window and followed my every move. Bianca had been in the shelter over a year so I decided she was the one who was coming home with us. After a traumatic trip home with her doing nothing but crying in her carrier, I opened the door the second we got home and she ran and hid. I told my husband not to expect to see her for another day but much to my surprise within 2 hours she was out of hiding and one the couch with her new mom and dad. She would spend most of her days lying between my husband legs on the recliner and sleep right next to me in bed. She chose me!!!!!

All my pets have been rescues. I didn't rescue them with any higher purpose than to give an unwanted animal a home and even though a couple of them have proven to be huge challenges, I could not love them any less. Time, patience and tons of love have proven that it is never too late to adopt. I've loved all my furry friends as if they were of my blood and they, in turn, have given me more than 100% back.

I'm not purposefully trying to be funny but... lol. Did you "take" the dog or adopt the dog. Either way; all good. No skin off my tits but you keep saying the word take. Also the "don't spend money" comment when shelters usually charge a fee. Lol. Lastly, and this made me belly laugh after thinking you had stolen a dog from an animal shelter, the illustration of a literal cage cut open. Just being me. Nosy. So... nice chatting with ya :)

I fully agree with getting a pet from a shelter. However, it's not usually free. They ask for money to cover shots and meds they needed to give. I would certainly do that, just keep in mind that it isn't usually free.

there were more people who realize how much and how the animals around us are full of love. they all realized that the love these creatures can give us is infinitely greater than what we will ever be able to give them back. there would be fewer abandoned animals. but people do not see in those sweet eyes the sweet and trusting soul that begs them to give them only a little love. he does not look at those little faces, he just thinks of them as animals, without identity, without empathy, without love. and he abandons them. he breaks their hopes like dry leaves on which he walks, lets them fly away in the wind, like their safety, and their hopes. he abandons them to hunger, to despair, to the fear that will never abandon them completely. even when someone comes in those eyes that sees the pain of abandonment, but also a reserve of love still intact and huge.

fantastic and oh so real I have 2 shelter dogs one is deaf and had been in a puppy mill then dumped after a batch of puppies, we ended up freeing her and the puppies. no I got her after the weaning she was going to be put down as no one wanted a deaf dog, and yes it has been a work of art with her, as we do not look at mum when we do wrong as the hand signals are mean to me.the other is a mosnter of a dog standing up taller than me , ok so I am not quite 5ft. but loving and they are just a joy as my Hubby passed away and they fill a small gap well a large gap really

Hey Great Article,Thanks. About 4 months ago I bought a dog for the first time in my life (pitbull). But I have some problems with dog training and thinking about hiring a dog trainer online. These dog trainer, my uncle introduced me who had the same problem with his dog and now everything is fine. Do you think it's a good move to hire a dog trainer? I keep reading good reviews about her but I am unsure if it will still work on me. At this time I can hire this trainer at a very low price,so if possible can you leave me feedback on wether I should do it or not. It would mean a lot coming from an expert in this field. How did they get a dog from the animal shelter without spending any money? I thought they make you "donate" a certain amount to rescue the dog. I understand what they are trying to get at with the "adopt, don't buy from a puppy farm" thing, but at least frame it in a truthful way right?

I am the author. It's Russia. You do not pay for what you give to the animal house. You are grateful, because the situation with homeless animals is terrible. The shelters are overcrowded. Always.

l adopted three animals spontaneously. first the most aggressive labrador ever seen, guy working in shelter was telling about him, that he was mostly in cage to keep other dogs safe, next day he was mine. he lived happy life, chew all wooden furniture, slept next to me every night, swim in lake every day and died peacefully. took two blind kittens from street, now they are beautiful fluffy girls. couldn't save their eyes, infection was too serious, but they are beautiful, they like hunting, bringing ugly bugs from balcony, sitting on keyboard when l'm working etc.

Always.
