This Group Is Dedicated To People Posting Really Expensive Accidents And Mistakes, And Here Are 45 Of The Worst Ones
Mistakes are just lessons waiting to be learned! Unfortunately, some of those mistakes can be very, very expensive. They hit your wallet with the force of a charging rhino, leaving you clutching your head in agony and letting out incomprehensible bleats about how much money just went down the drain.
That’s where the ‘That Looked Expensive’ subreddit comes in. It’s an internet community that’s dedicated to documenting all the hilarious (not to mention painful) times that people made expensive mistakes. Like wrecking their cars. Or planes. (Or presidential campaigns. Sorry, Mike Bloomberg.)
Bored Panda spoke about the best way for people to deal with mistakes and how important a role emotions play in learning from them with researcher and Assistant Professor of Marketing Noelle Nelson from the University of Oregon. She told us that people vary in how much they tend to justify their mistakes. "Some learn early that it's important to accept when you've done something wrong while others get in a habit of justifying/deflecting/making excuses. Everyone, though, has done this to some degree." Scroll down for our in-depth interview with Noelle and for our chat with the founder of the 'That Looked Expensive' subreddit, Approx-, dear Pandas. Remember to upvote your fave expensive blunders and to let us know in the comments what the most expensive thing that you wrecked was and how you did it.

No Matter How Much You Screw Up, You'll Never Ever Have To Tell Your Boss: Sir, I Toppled That 290 Million Dollar Noaa-N Prime Satellite Right Onto The Shop Floor.
And then you see the two people in the back thinking I think we should pack our bags already
Oh man, I asked my boss if he knew about this, his previous job was in this area, turns out he was there, and explained what happened. Bottom line, if there is a process, follow it. If not, that's what happens.
Really hoping he doesn't do bored panda. Lol.
Load More Replies...I almost had a heart attack when I first saw this photo the day after the accident. The machine shop I worked at made the white positioning device to the left of the satellite, it moves the satellite between vertical and horizontal positions. I personally made the large circular plate that bolted onto the satellite adapter plate. My first sickening thought was that the plate I'd made had somehow failed. I felt so relieved when I read that they had unbolted the satellite and neglected to leave a note/warning for the next shift.

The gas’s reaction also makes it potentially hazardous to people as it may deflate the lungs if inhaled."

This is the house across the road from me. The car stacker wasn't wired correctly and that day we had torrential rain which shorted the wiring and sent the stacker up with only the balcony to stop it.
Noelle told Bored Panda that there are a lot of reasons why we justify our mistakes and she told us a couple of the main ones. "We don't like feeling negative emotion and the goal is very often to 'get back' to a positive state. If we can justify something we did wrong, we don't have to feel bad about it anymore."
She continued with the second reasons: "We want to protect our positive self image. Justifying a mistake means that I didn't do anything wrong or whatever went wrong wasn't my fault. That means I can still feel like I'm 'good.'"
Noelle said that her research suggests that taking the time to stop and feel the negative emotions associated with the mistake helps a person learn from that mistake. "We find that it's not enough to just think about the mistake and why it happened. Our brains are designed to be guided by emotion, so actually feeling that negative emotion is important," she said.
Don't Tailgate A School Bus When Your Car Is Shaped Like A Door Stop
It's an even better idea to not tailgate anyone. It's dangerous and super annoying
haha, my dad has a big truck and he smiles every time a car tries to tailgate.
The STUPID IDIOT was probably on there cell phone not paying attention and they got what they deserve and I hope the court crush there wallet also
I bet the court doesnt care. If anything po po would give a minor ticket and move on. School district will get paid to repaint the bumper, which it wont.
Load More Replies...I hate tailgaters... my tyres and brakes are in tip-top condition, but are theirs? I think too many people think they're better drivers than they really are- there is ZERO chance many of them would have in a hard/emergency breaking situation. I drive a lot for my work and have avoided at least six major collisions because I kept distance and was able to manoeuvre out of the way of danger, once at just under 70 mph.

It's not well deserved for the nature around that car. The car is going to dump a lot of pollutants in the area: battery acid, oil, coolant, etc. Every time you see a car dumped in an ocean or river, it is a tragedy.

"In our experiments, people who were asked to feel those negative emotions corrected their behavior on a similar task later on. This happened even though they didn't know the tasks were connected! That suggests that the emotional learning doesn't have to be consciously done by a person; simply making sure to allow oneself to feel those negative emotions leads to learning."
Noelle revealed to us that lately she's been working on research that addresses why people have a hard time changing their minds about important topics and how we might be able to communicate in a way that would help them absorb new information that they don't necessarily agree with. "Generally, how people process emotions and thoughts is important in how they learn, function and interact with their environment."

If a technician can do this, it is not the technician's fault. Redundant security systems should prevent this from happening!

It’s one thing to mess up as an individual but it’s a whole other ball game when companies or countries mess up. For example, back in 2000, Netflix approached Blockbuster with an idea to take care of the digital part of their company. Blockbuster said ‘no’ and, well, we don’t have to tell you how things worked out over the next two decades for both companies, do we? A ‘yes’ instead of a ‘no’ and we could still have a healthy version of Blockbuster!
If You’re Having A Bad Day, Just Know That At Least You Didn’t Shatter A 16,000$ Bottle Of Victory In Europe, 1945 Château Mouton Rothschild
That's nothing a wine merchant in the late 80's broke a 1787 Château Margaux that was valued at.... hold your hats.... half a million and was owned by Thomas Jefferson! True story
I was once fortunate enough to try a Spanish wine from 1831 (I happened to be in the right place at the right time to be generously included in a tasting). The wine had not turned bad in the least. On the contrary, it was amazing. Age had evolved its palate beyond regular wine which made for a whole new experience and as cassiushumanmother said, it had become exotic! I would say the loss of this 1945 wine is worse than any of the expensive wrecked cars here. Money aside, those cars exist and can be purchased again. This wine, from that year, however, can never be created again. So it is a piece of history that has been lost without even the enjoyment of drinking it.

Another costly blunder happened when the so-called ‘Walkie-Talkie’ skyscraper was built in London. Big Oof
I actually played on a Steinway piano for a small performance that my instructor set up. When it was my turn to play, I just remember walking up, sitting down, started the intro of the piece only to freeze completely when I caught sight of the price tag on the side... $160,000... I screwed up the entire piece cause I was afraid of scratching anything on that thing with my nails or breaking the pedal with my foot. Total anxiety meltdown. Especially considering I just got accepted into college and my debt was building.

Exactly! I've been having MRI scans since I was a kid. The riskiest one was when I had braces....the Drs said well we will just leave ur head sticking out the end you should b fine. Looking back that's a worry
Load More Replies...Wow... MRI is indeed a powerful magnet... usually 0.5 to 3 Tesla. Earth’s magnetic field is 30 microtesla (30x 10^-6 tesla). Regular old refrigerator magnets are usually 0.01 Tesla, and I have dealt with magnets with 0.14 Tesla and even 0.14 Tesla wasn’t fun. MRI in clinical setting is even more powerful than junkyard magnets.
I am terrified of MRI machines, ever since I heard the story of how something was accidently left in the room and the MRI machine pulled it inside and it decapitated the person inside the machine. Idk how true the story is, but clearly as shown in this picture it's totally possible... *shudders*

This wasn't a sinkhole in the normal sense. The development was built over an extensive network of mines. The city was aware of the mines even though they had never been mapped and approved the project. The city, developers, title search companies, insurance, and real estate companies are all being sued. Unfortunately all but the city will be able to escape by declaring bankruptcy and the city will get stuck with the bill using money from their general fund (money used for libraries, parks, and infrastructure) to cover it while the rest take their profits and run.
This was in the news just a month ago. The builder knowingly bought the land on an old abandoned mine since it was cheap. I would not be surprised if they declare bankruptcy to avoid lawsuits.

Well actually it's the only one with a mast, and it looks metal so it would act as a lightning conductor but don't mind me the nerd and geek Thor's cool

Australia, never ever camp under nice big shady River Red Gum trees. People die.
Thanks for the tip. I'll just add this to the long list of reasons why I'll never go to Australia.

Of All The Cars The Deer Had To Pick...
Judging by the blood I'm guessing the deer didn't survive. Am I supposed to be sad about the car?
For that level of impact they would’ve been driving far too fast. The deer is the only one I feel sorry for.
You have no clue what the speed limit is on that road.
Load More Replies...This was my first reaction BUT if that was my car I'd be pissed
Load More Replies...That's probably the best car for this to happen to (well, not for the deer) -- this driver almost certainly has insurance and can afford to lose the use of his "fun" car until he gets it fixed or replaced. A bad car for this to happen to would have been a beat up 15 year old Honda that has no collision insurance and the driver can't afford to be without a car for 2 weeks while it's repaired.
Obviously you don't live where there are a lot of deer. They can come out of nowhere.

I can imagine the driver getting out and saying ‘nothing to see here’ while walking nonchalantly away after his tank is discovered.
Customer Ignored The Pressure Rating Of His Cylinder And Shot Oil Out At Such A High Pressure It Cut 1 Inch Thick Steel
More from the high pressure. You can do unbelievable damage with liquids under high enough pressure, even with just air.

Because they WANT to & it is their right to do so. I'd rather not spend my life consumed by spite but whatever....

Ferrari F40 Burns In Monte Carlo Today
Yeah, buddy, I know you gotta TRY, but that hose is too little, too late.
I love the dude on his balcony helplessly trying to battle the blaze with a garden hose!
On the bright side: The owner decided to restore this classic to it's former glory. Not because he loves that car so much, but because it's a very secure and profitable investment.

Once, they had to ship some fossils from I think the USA (or somewhere in South America) which had been painstakingly dug out, collected, recorded, cleaned, celebrated over and were on their way to Europe to a museum. Cutting a long story short: because the boss of the dig decided to save some money, they packed the stuff themselves and delivered them to a container. Guess what? Ships on the ocean do not travel all smoothly over the sea. When the container was opened in port for customs, there was nothing left but piles of rubble and dust. The whole dig was destroyed (maybe some small bones were left?) because they used the wrong straps to tie it down, which broke during the travel. I saw the pictures. I nearly wept for the poor museum and all the faithful paleontologists on site (and I'm still hoping the guy who stupidly decided to save money hasn't killed himself out of devastation)
That's an actual tragedy... loss of irreplaceable artifacts.
