On the top of the world at Svalbard, an archipelago situated between Norway and the North Pole, is a place that the world forgot for nearly a decade, a Russian mining settlement established by Sweden in 1910 but then sold to the Soviet Union in 1927, then completely abandoned in 1998.
It’s only reachable with driving 140km with a snowmobile during winter.

It's amazing how well-preserved some of the buildings/rooms are. After being abandoned 22 years ago, in that climate, one would thing they would be much worse.
Well, in 2007 they did start restoring some buildings for tourists, like the hotel and movie theater, and since 2013 you can even spend the night. The generator are all new and there is a 30-man crew on site all year round to take care of things. The rest of the settlement is still abandoned though.

Beautiful Svalbard! I used to be a Search and Rescue helicopter pilot located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. And I've overflown and landed several times in Pyramiden. Svalbard is the most breathtaking and one-of-a-kind place I've ever been to.
Photo, which has been taken in some concert hall looks quite doubtful. First of all light, but may be there is some generator. But ceiling with such lights! It's quite modern. Thanks for the photos!
No, they simply started restoring the hotel and movie theater for tourists. They started work in 2007 and since 2013 you can even spend the night at the hotel. The diesel generators are all new and there is a crew of 30 people that live on site all year round to take care of it.
