Giphy is synonymous with random, bizarre, and often funny animations. It isn't exactly known for its educational qualities. But that's about to change thanks to their recent decision to release a collection of GIFs aimed at teaching people sign language.
They come from Sign With Robert, an educational series starring actor and American Sign Language (ASL) consultant Robert DeMayo, and there are over 2,000 different GIFs to chose from. The looping GIF format is perfect for learning because you don't need to keep hitting play or repeat, and they're all easily accessible because they're all on one dedicated page. The collection currently includes simple words and phrases which were decided upon by Giphy based on the the most popular words that users searched for, but they plan to roll out more complex words in the future. Check out some of our favorites below. You might just learn a thing or two.

Yes. Without the facial expression, it won't be ASL. With facial expression, there are different amount of levels how we express.
Load More Replies...They're not "made up." ASL is a legit language like any other.
Load More Replies...They kinda are. Someone invented them and decided to pick nose is the sign for being bored
my son is going to love this one. I can already see him running down the hall signing it
Hahaha!! Oh my.. I think it'd take me ages to learn sign language!
Load More Replies...Deaf people have been beat up, shot, even killed, because someone erroneously thought they were throwing gang signs at them (even if the Deaf person wasn't even looking at them). So, not really funny, sorry.
Load More Replies...The reason why it's so coming down so hard is because snow is the same sign, only you make it look like it's lightly falling, rather than pounding down.
Is this American sign language? Because for a moment I got confused, it's really interesting to see the different 'dialects' of sign language
lolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Looks like: «Alien is coming out my throat» Or: «I was choked by a Heavy Metal singer»
Dude, BoredPanda is a positive community. Stop with your negativity.
Load More Replies...Weird. Why don't they use common signs? I can't imagine what they di to say yes. Even wasap has normal icons!
If you finger spell N-O you can see the similarity
Load More Replies...They still need a sign for the words though. E.g. I don't laugh when I say the word "laugh" :)
Load More Replies...coz there needs to be facial expression to accompany the movement so its easier for the deaf to interpret
Load More Replies...If your mouth was open, this gesture would have a totally different meaning
Anyone else think the very first part kind of looks like dancing/listening to music?
I wonder what the chicken dance translates to in sign language... "lobster, lobster, lobster, armpit rash, armpit rash, armpit rash, sit down for a s**t, sit down for a s**t"
Load More Replies...Looks more like an insult... But usually that gesture is accompained by the middle finger up in the air.
i was thinking more in the line of an italian salute
Load More Replies...In Poland similar gesture but with closed fist is called "Kozakiewicz's gesture" and it means as much as "f**k you" :D
That won't make it a "good" morning, but at least it'll wake you up! 🤦🏽♀️
Load More Replies...In Poland that gesture will be associated with the so-called. "Kozakiewicz gesture".
Is that for a kid who's been naughty or an adult who is feeling a bit naughty?
I imagine doing Thriller in a room full of deaf people isn't gonna go over well
you only use one palm, put it on your belly then rise it a little in front (not on the sides, that's the sign for fat)
Load More Replies...It's actually meant to represent a three corner, or tricorn, hat that they wore in colonial times. ;)
Load More Replies...People why use ASL really must learn to be great actors. Nothing is "spoken" without facial expression!
Nevermind, Found It. Thanks..."More info: Giphy"
Load More Replies...those of you making fun of the signs CLEARLY have no idea about the Deaf/HOH, their culture or their language. Being insulting and poking fun at things you know NOTHING about, and frankly, don't seem like you WANT to learn. SMH Stop being obtuse and try educating yourselves.
I am hard of hearing and you should ASL because deaf people wants you sign language for them. They will make happy:)
don't know if he's making it for fun, or what. I just found it so funny XD
Why do non-hearing/speaking people make such extreme facial expressions?
It's so the meaning and context can be better understood. Plus it adds a lot of emotion to the words. Additionally, some signs are very similar or the same to other words. Facial expressions help differentiate between them. Hearing people use tone and inflection to help aid understanding and help people relate to them. This is how deaf/HoH people do that.
