According to JJ Edmondson, an operational firefighter in Victoria, Australia, "International Firefighters’ Day is observed each year on 4th May. On this date you are invited to remember the past firefighters who have died while serving our community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all. At the same time, we can show our support and appreciation to the firefighters world wide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year."
In honour of these brave men and women, we at Bored Panda have put together this list of firefighters saving pets. After all, pets aren't just animals--they're members of our families, too! Koala Named Sam Is Given A Drink Of Water By Cfa Volunteer Fire Fighter

The koala was a female who was named Sam at the point that those involved still thought she was a he. The fact that firefighter David Tree was able to approach Sam was a miracle; then the fact that he was able to feed her water was even more astounding — not just because koalas don't usually accept human contact (much less hold a human's hand for comfort), but because koalas don't normally drink water. They usually get all their needs met by eating eucalyptus leaves. So this was one amazing situation. Sam went on to get herself a boyfriend while recovering at an animal sanctuary, but sadly later died from her burn wounds. Australia was devastated. I was crushed. Almost everyone had been following her updates in the news, hoping she'd make it. :(

if i remember right this during the 2008 victorian bushfires. such brave firies rescuing the native bushlife as well <3

It was around the time of the Black Saturday fires (February 2009), but this particular koala was caught up in a backburning operation, not the devastating bushfires themselves.

Good guesses about the diaper, but this pooch is misidentified in the caption. It's a dachshund, and they are prone to a disease called Intervertibral Disc Disease, or IVDD. German Shepherds are prone to it as well. It can paralyze them, leaving them unable to walk or urinate on their own. These are the doggies u often see in doggie wheelchairs, or u might think they're just being pampered when u see them in doggie strollers. Once paralyzed, they need to be expressed on a regular basis, but the rest is uncontrollable, hence the diaper. Kudos to this owner who knows that IVDD is not a death sentence. My dad was a firefighter many years ago (he is now 86). To all the men and women who go out on a daily basis to save those who are unable to do so for themselves, human & animal, I salute you all. You do awesome things. Be loved.
