Post Before & After Drawings Showing Your Progress As An Artist
Hey pandas, I have been always struggling with drawing. Even after practicing it for a while, my drawings still suck. Recently, I watched a professional artist create illustrations and I was completely shocked at how easy and fast she was drawing. Now I feel hopeless.
So my question is - is it a talent you are born with or can you learn it with lots of practice? Post your before and after pics of your progress.

Is this before studying art at uni and after plus a few years experience, second one is awesome, first one reminds me of a computer game :)
I actually never studied at an art uni, I'm self taught. But yeah still needed a lot of practice.

My Little Sisters Whale When She Was 8 Compared To Her Now At 26
Age 26 draws more artistic ditail Age 8 has some passion put into its work it's eight that persons trying
From 2013-2015
They both look the Same first one looks like it got drawn the second one looks like it got shot on TV
My best efforts look like the 2013 drawing... I need more practice :)
Age 16 Vs Age 23
The After drawings seem to have lost so much authenticity, in order to mimic the perfection of a photograph
2008 (3 Hours) Vs 2015 (15 Minutes)
The original looks like a real Wolf The second picture looks like a cartoon in my favorite animal is wolves
Wow that's a good progress! You were drawing 1st one 3 hours, but then you draw the 2nd one in 15 min! That's insane 😍👍❤
Great comparison! It's cool to see the differences between just a few years of real practice.
2013 Vs 2014
The second has more detail, but the first has better proportions looking at the face.
I could practice for eternity and never be as good as the first picture.
1970 Vs 2015
2005 And 2016
2003 Vs 2015
My Progress
2005 - 2015
I've Only Recently Started Using Charcoal And I Think I'm Progressing Well!
Omg I love pit bulls! When people say they are bad they are blaming the wrong end of the leash, judge the deed not the breed
Yes, that's why there are an equal number of injuries and fatalities related to dachshund, beagle and chow chow attacks.

5 Years Between Ferrari F1 Car Drawings
The first one (11 yrs) is amazing considering most adults can't draw F1 that good!
not toi take away from the second drawing because it is reallllly well done but omg i cant believe you drew the first one at only 11. that is really something
Fantine 2013 Vs 2014
How cool to do a repeat and see for yourself! Even though you're obviously talented, it must be rewarding to see your growth. And don't we all want to know our hard work is helping us grow?
"Talented" would not be the right word, what brings results is hard work and practice ! But I agree, it's like a milestone
Load More Replies...2nd one looks more solid because you're mastering the use of light and dark in your art. It has better proportions too. Nice work!
just a little more shading from the first one and voila! it is clear who it is! very well done!!

are you sure the second one isnt a photo?.... just kidding! The second illustration is so beautiful!
Amazing what 2 little years can do! Did you take classes? Or self-taught? How many hours a week do you practice and how long did your 2nd piece take?
Oh and I practice when I need to do something mostly weekends but a lot of practice involved

The second is a woodburning, too? I've never seen such beauty teased out of wood. What type wood was used?
Thank you :) The wood is known as basswood. It's fantastic for woodburning.

Progress Over 13 Years.
Your kitten was done at age 13? Amazing! And yet, even though that kitten is fabulous, I see maturity in the 2nd, bold darks, shadows and light. I keep noticing that. As artists grow, they seem less afraid of the darker darks, keeping paper white, more drama to the piece.
Sorry to interrupt, but I think it is a lynx :)

I really like your technique. It is unique. Nothing like what I have seen so far. Well done! ;)
July 2015 Vs May 2016
Great progress! One massive tip from a designer, lose the lines! If you can get the definition of different elements of the face without drawing lines but by using shadows (like you are downing very nicely bytheway) you get a way more realistic portrait! Keep it up!
Thanks for the tip. I'm really trying to not go so heavy with my lines but with each piece I'm getting there with shading.
Well, you started with a bucket full of talent already! You've grown so much in just a year it's unbelievable!
Ah yes well Lana is just brilliant

Another born with talent! What have you done to increase level of skill, though? Do you take art in school? At an arts school? Or just lots of practice?
observing was really important to improve my skills, to draw something I struggled in I would study it every chance I got, real life, watching a movie, playing video games(best reference because I can look at it in different angles, I would then imagine myself drawing it and be realistic about it, i would actually struggle drawing something in my own mind, then I finally draw it and look at all my mistakes and study the specific areas I failed on and draw only those areas, i repeat the process and keep improving

Oh, my! You already have talent, yet look at the growth! Beautiful shading! Hey, I'm 59 and hadn't drawn or painted in 40 years. Now, that would be a sad before and after, cuz I was better then! However, I'm doing and learning many things every time I work! You're nowhere near your potential and never will be, you see. You'll learn and grow until you're a very old man! I hope you keep at it.
Thanks! I only do it as a hobby, but I hope to get better at it!

Sara, I'm a little confused by what you mean by asking if the pictures are "drawings" OR "digital image creations"... Digital drawings/paintings are still drawings/paintings (unless they are pure photo-manipulation) - it's just that the medium is digital rather than crayon, pastel, oil, etc..

Part 2 :
It can be discouraging to see professional artists create stunning illustrations so effortlessly, but take inspiration from others as a driving force in your own art journey.
For instance, consider how an artist took on the challenge of bringing animated characters to life by reimagining cartoon figures with more realistic qualities. Their unique style and dedication were cultivated over time, showcasing that practice indeed enhances one's skills.
I am not one to judge what is art or not, but I have been asking this for myself: Being able to draw a face from a photograph, for example, so realistically that is pretty much looks the same as the photograph...it shows amazing technique, but how satisfying is it as "art", to the artist himself or to the viewer. Since many of the improvements above seem to be towards a higher degree of realism (ultra-realism), this question popped up in my head, not intended to downplay anything or anybody.
As a realistic painter, it's easy to me to answer your question, which is wholly understandable. Realism is one of the many visual languages you can choose to express yourself. Some of these are harder to paint and execute, yet some require more work on the concept. While with some other styles you can explore, for example, the materic properties of paint or abstract forms, speaking of realistic art, you can focus on exploring the dimension of subject or even depict things that cannot exist in a visual language that makes them read as "real". Also, if something looks like a photograph, it doesn't always mean the artist copied one, in fact you can also paint invented scenes and make them look as real. That said, what you see in my paintings is, for example, a highly idealised version of what I see in front of me which also many times includes elements that could not physically exist.

Same here, and I think that everyone is born an artist, but some choose that path instead of others.

Suddenly i want to grow my own food and draw and photograph all the places i go but i also want to be good at it, so i have a camera and im working on that, due to my lifestyle at the moment i cant grow anything yet, but i just recently ordered a sketch book and some drawing pencils and a book from amazon called how to draw cool stuff. Im not expecting to become amazing over night or anything but is there a website i could go to learn/watch how people draw??? Im looking into doing sketch/doodle/high detail animals. And im hoping once i can become a decent at that i will take to other areas such as graffiti art and water color paintings.
