Wife & Husband Turn Wire Found In Discarded TVs Into Tree Of Life Pendants
Orlando-based artist Celina Ortiz creates eco-friendly “Tree of Life” pendants together with her husband under the name RecycledBeautifully. The couple scavenge TVs that people throw in the trash and pull copper or aluminum wire from them. Then they twist the wire into trees that wrap around various vibrant stones that range from conventional turquoise or agate to more psychedelic-looking opals and abalones.
“By using recycled wire we are able to not only keep these items out of the landfills but we are also able to keep our jewelry priced at amazingly low prices,” the Ortiz family write on their Etsy shop. Like what you see? The beautiful pendants sell from 40 to 70 USD.

They make nice looking stuff, but their products are amazingly expensive, not cheap (even if you buy the copper wire, it's quite cheap), and everything they make rests on the beauty of the chosen stone, otherwise it's just an unimaginative "choose stone, bend same tree, repeat". Sorry, I'm grumpy in the mornings and the "article" really pushed my buttons. I make wire jewelry and the most attractive thing for me is the creative liberty it affords so this is just shameful capitalism in my eyes.
At best, this shop was disorganised and sloppy. I ordered a pendant from Etsy with a 3-5 days-to-ship estimate. After 7 days, I inquired. I was told it would ship that day. I asked for a tracking number. I was told to check back tomorrow. The next day I got a tracking number which stated the item had still not been dropped off to USPS. Over the next two days, it did not update. I contacted again. She claimed it was "lost in the mail", it's happened many times recently. She then cancelled the order and refunded the payment, but claimed it would be resent. I asked if she was sure, as I'd rather just order this already-late-birthday-present elsewhere. She said it had been sent, and if we still hadn't received it, we probably put the wrong address (we didn't). I asked if she had an updated tracking number. She didn't. The whole thing was fishy and stunk of excuses and dishonesty. I would recommend avoiding, DEFINITELY if there is any kind of time sensitivity.
Me too. Pity it's so expensive. I guess I'll stick with my favorite jewelry maker from Vermont. While they don't use copper, the designs are beautiful and some are set with semi-precious stones.
