Yellowstone National Park Is The Harshest Place In Winter, Yet Also The Most Beautiful

I’ve spent the past year living just outside of Yellowstone National Park. As a photographer and outdoorsman, I spend my free time exploring nature and bringing back photos to share.

Winter is by far my favorite season, although Yellowstone is bitterly cold all winter long. I braved temperatures of below zero Fahrenheit for many of these images, but wouldn’t you say they’re worth it?

Crested Pool

Crested Pool is a hot spring near Old Faithful with a deep center, and vibrant blue and orange colors.

Frost Covered Trees

The fog builds a layer of thick frost on the trees, making them appear sugar coated.

The Firehole River

The Firehole River is a stark contrast between boiling hot springs on one side, and several feet of snow on the other.

A Hunting Fox

Foxes and other animals throughout Yellowstone have to forage for their meal underneath several feet of snow.

Old Faithful In Winter

The crisp air exaggerates the steaming hot springs and geysers that make Yellowstone famous.

Skiing The Yellowstone Backcountry

Most of Yellowstone is closed for vehicle travel in the winter, but travel by snowshoe or skiing is a wonderful experience!

Bacon Rind Creek

The Montana section of Yellowstone is open during the winter, and offers great cross country ski trails.
