In the past week, you may have seen red hearts and pink ribbons circulating on Facebook. It’s a sort of “game” where people ask each other to post a heart on their Facebook wall to honor breast cancer awareness. One breast cancer survivor, Erin Smith Chieze, decided to help women fight breast cancer in a different way….

“Someone once posted a picture on Facebook of what breast cancer can look like. Not feel, but look like. In December of 2015 when I saw an indentation upon breast exam that looked like one of those pictures, I instantly knew I had breast cancer,” Erin wrote next to a picture she posted on Facebook. The photo shows how different lemons represent different breast cancer symptoms, such as invisible lumps, dimpling, indentation, and more. “We need to give REAL information, not cute hearts,” Erin wrote. And her photo along with the message has gone viral on Facebook since with over 13k likes and 28k shares. Check out the photo below or Erin’s full post on Facebook.

My mom had breast cancer, the comparision to a lemon seed is very accurate - hard, immovable. Remember ladies to selfexam your lemons, that's how my mom saved herslef! And don't be afraid to go check your result with your doctor, it's better to ask and receive a negative answer, even if asking often, than not ask and wake up too late!

Brilliant way to illustrate what to look for.

I strongly suggest everyone interested to watch the Pink Ribbons documentary. Mammograms are actually bad for your breasts.

Thank goodness so far it is benign, but I was 29 when I found a lump the size of a very small pea with my self exam. Every six months I get another sonogram. Even younger women (and men) NEED to do self exams regularly. If nothing else, to know how it looks and feels when things are "normal". Then it will be easier to know when something is off.

I think it's great to be aware of a cancer that can be caught early by doing something simple like self breast exams. When it comes to cancer, the earlier you find it, the better your chances of beating it. Yes, I think a photo of lemons will make a difference. At least one woman will see it and realize that something is not right with her breasts, and get them checked.

After a decade of "breast cancer awareness" bombardment in all the media, you think a photo of lemons will make a new difference? Who didn't get the memo by now is a hopeless case anyway.

I agree. Since I was sixteen I've been terrified by stories of breast cancer. Breast cancer awareness is so ubiquitous it's distracting people from other forms of cancer such as pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer. And there is much less awareness of mental health problems.
