We are Magy and Mr. Shushtari. Four years ago, we decided to leave everything behind us and travel around the world. We had never planned such a long trip, but the road took us to amazing places. We traveled with an extremely low budget of USD 3.50 per person a day as we hitchhiked and slept in a tent.

Our adventure started in Bulgaria when four years ago we lifted a thumb on the highway. When in Pakistan, we were accompanied by a military escort all the way to the Indian border. Later the temptation of the Himalayas was too great to resist and we traveled 700 km on foot there wearing only sandals. Then it was time to visit Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam which is still a sultanate. In Singapore, we spent only USD 10 for a week. Our tent was attacked by six men armed with machete in Indonesia, and we got lost in the jungles of Borneo.

Papua New Guinea was the most adventurous place we had ever been to. There we met people from the indigenous tribes who live like their ancestors as hunter-gatherers. They do not have running water. They do not use electricity, let alone computers and internet. They live a wild wife away from modern civilization.

After that we got married on Fiji, hitchhiked a yacht and became a part of its crew. Alabama, for that was the boat’s name, took us to beautiful Pacific islands. We even lived on an atoll which we had to share with sharks. 6,000 miles later, the yacht reached its final destination – South Korea, and we left for Taiwan. Our trip continued in Vietnam, China and Mongolia, a vast land without any roads, bridges and signs, where we lived a nomadic life in a yurt for a short time. But it was not our last destination. Our journey took us to Siberia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, and Turkey.

We are the living proof that hitchhiking is not dangerous. On the contrary, when you hitch a ride, you get to know different people and cultures and realize that people are good at heart and always willing to help you and share the last crumb of bread with you.
