Charles Lyell said “the past is the key to the present” and we could not agree more when we discovered The Grammar of Ornament.

The Grammar of Ornament, a masterpiece of Owen Jones (1809-1874), is unquestionably a daring (and inspiring) printing project for its time.

Thousands of breathtaking decorative designs across different cultures instantly jumped at us from The Grammar of Ornament. We couldn’t help but get overwhelmed by the dazzling designs and felt an incredible need to share these amazing inspirations with designers and art lovers of our generation. So, we got to work digitalising these decorative patterns in the highest quality possible.

Here are some of the images from our labour of love. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

The full collection can be downloaded for free in high resolution (70 to 300 MB depending on the size) on our website.

NB. The Grammar of Ornament was first published in 1856 by Day & Son Limited. We digitalised the 1910 edition.
