We Recreated Scenes From The Lion King With Woolworths Lion King Ooshies In Their Natural Habitat- Landfill

I made this campaign with some of my furious mates who also want to see the end of the short term plastic toy promotions that the supermarket chains in Australia insist on making, that will plague the environment for generations to come.

Everywhere you go in Australia, you are bombarded with a promotion from supermarket chain Woolworths about their Lion King “Ooshies”.

As a parent, seeing this sort of plastic promotion makes my skin crawl. With the health of our planet in the balance, pushing these plastic parasites into the eco-system is morally reprehensible. And it’s teaching our kids a poor lesson that it’s ok to abandon environmental responsibility for short term gratification.

So, we created a series called “Future Landfill” where we have taken these Lion King Ooshies from Woolworths and recreated classic scenes from the movie.

However, instead of showing the African animals in the Serengeti, they are shown among landfill, as that is where the plastic toys are likely to spend the majority of their existence as they break down over hundreds of years.

The pictures were co-created by Alex Wadelton (who also spearheaded the campaign for a bronzed statue of iconic indigenous footballer Nicky Winmar, as well as the One Millimeter project which featured on Bored Panda two years ago), and Tom Whitty (former managing editor of The Project, whose editorial with Waleed Aly to #banthebag in 2017 attracted 200,000 signatures from Australians and was acknowledged by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews when Victoria put an end to single-use plastic bags.)

If you have Ooshie toys and want to recycle them, Woolworths is only accepting them until the 31st of October. After that, it’s up to you where the plastic toys end up.
