As parents, we’re constantly striving to create a nurturing environment for our kids, one filled with warmth, comfort, and love. One way to achieve this is by welcoming a furry mate into our homes. Dogs, known as our loyal best friends, have a profound impact on the lives of adults and children as they grow up. These remarkable creatures provide a sense of security and companionship that exceeds our expectations, and their unconditional love can positively influence our children’s mental and emotional well-being.

According to renowned dog trainer Cesar Millan, “Dogs don’t rationalise. They don’t hold anything against a person. They don’t see the outside of a human but the inside of a human.”

This innate ability to love and accept unconditionally makes dogs a perfect companion for children, especially during their formative years.

We recently had the opportunity to yarn with PawsitiveWellness co-founder Tom, who shared his personal experience with the life-changing impact dogs can have on families.

He explained, “Dogs have had a profound impact on my family. My wife had grown up with dogs, and when we met, we got our first dog. Since then, I’ve loved having dogs in my life – in my house, curled up on me, out for a run, teaching tricks, playing and interacting. Some moments that matter across my life are being with my family and dogs.”

As their children grew up, Tom’s family noticed the powerful bond between their two boys and their canine companions. “When our children were about 8 or 9, the dog started sleeping with them at night. So no matter how sad, tired, or frustrated they’ve been during their teenage years, there’s always been someone giving them unconditional love.

“I reckon this has become one of the magic moments we accidentally stumbled upon. I would recommend anyone else finding the right dog to have an impact on your family and your life.”

The importance of this bond between children and dogs cannot be overstated. As dog behaviour, expert Dr. Ian Dunbar explains, “Training is not a luxury, but a key component to good animal care.”

Parents can instil a sense of responsibility, empathy, and compassion in their kids by teaching children how to train and interact with their dogs. Moreover, growing up with a dog can help children develop essential social and emotional skills, such as patience, understanding, and confidence.

Another renowned dog trainer, Zak George, emphasises the importance of understanding and communication between dogs and their human mates: “A well-exercised dog is a well-behaved dog.”

Parents can ensure that their children stay active and healthy while fostering a strong bond with their furry friends by involving children in their dog’s exercise routine.

So, welcoming a dog into your family can impact your children’s emotional well-being and personal growth. Dogs’ unconditional love, companionship, and warmth create magic moments that last a lifetime. By choosing the right dog and nurturing the bond between your child and their canine companion, you can help create an environment of love and comfort, ensuring that your child grows up with a loyal friend who will always be there for them.
