No matter what they say, there are some things you don’t learn in school. In fact, there are many, but let’s just all pretend that those volumes of school books devoured back in our childhood years did make a difference.
You see, learning facts is about being world-savvy. Like, when you’re out at the pub quiz competing for beers on the house, you may throw out some of the best Today I Learned’s for a killer checkmate. Formerly known as “Did you know that?” facts, Today I Learned has all their good qualities minus the annoying and needlessly pretentious vibe.
And thanks to the unofficial powerhouse of the knowledge-hungry ones among us, also known as the r/TodayILearned subreddit with 24.8 million members, we now have the most sought-after collection of randomly interesting facts out there. So take your notebooks out, kids, we're gonna take those brain cells for a ride.

Slaveholders in the US knew that enslaved people were escaping to Mexico, the U.S. tried to get Mexico to sign a fugitive slave treaty, but Mexico refused to sign such a treaty, insisting that all enslaved people were free once they set foot on Mexican soil.
Well, Mexico's view on slavery was a huge part in Texas' decision to declare independence from Mexico. They were all like "we can't enslave people? Then we'll start our own country, with slaves, and booze!" They later joined USA, since USA were more accomodating with slavery
and yet the USA has a reputation of thinking they're 'better than' Mexico...
And everywhere else in the world. I am sick of hearing dumb people from USA talking about "all the feeedom" that we dont have in Europe. Not saying that all USA people is like that of course.
Load More Replies...The main reasons Texas seceded from Mexico and became a Republic were that Mexico outlawed slavery and demanded conversion to Catholicism.
Their descendants are called Mascogos and they're still around. https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/world/amp-stories/descendants-of-american-slaves-fled-to-mexico-mascogos/

A hunger for knowledge is something we have to nurture throughout our lives. After all, keeping our brains busy with learning new things, like a language, is known to be a powerful antidote against diseases in old age, like dementia and Alzheimer’s.
But our desire to learn starts from an early age as we don’t turn into life-long learners overnight. Previously, Bored Panda talked to Lenore Skenazy, the president of Let Grow, the nonprofit promoting childhood independence about nurturing our kids’ desire to learn beyond compulsory education.

A school principal once made a student who'd gotten into trouble sit in the basement & read the U.S. Constitution as punishment. That student (who committed the Constitution to memory as a result) was Thurgood Marshall, who went on to become the first Black Supreme Court justice.
Underlying is also the fact that the Constitution is a quite short document --- which almost zero of its "defenders" in the Capitol insurrection has actually read. Like bible verses, they know some numbers but haven't read the whole and haven't grasped its overall intent/content. "The second amendment!"... but to what, to the document or a specific law?; they will guess.
I read that 7 of those "defenders" didn't even vote.

I remember reading that a teacher said to him "why were you named 'Thurgood' when you're so 'Thurbad'" ...
Thurgood Marshall was arguably, and in my opinion, the most influential black person in our history. I would argue that he was more instrumental in achieving civil rights goals than King was. Marshall worked for decades, not years, decades to overturn the 1896 Plessy vs. Ferguson ruling (separate but equal is constitutional...but blacks never had equal access to society). He actually argued in the Supreme Court, the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling. He was the head of the NAACP legal team and they chipped away at Plessy bit by bit until they could take it down entirely. A genuinely impressive strategy. Planned, thorough, cunning, patient..and relentless. That he was a justice was a really, really important part of his life, it was only one part of it. One of the giants of U.S. history.

First, Lenore recommends parents “designate an hour or two each day as ‘outdoor’ time without any electronic devices.” It turns out that this is a crucial step into bringing out the ‘curious child.’
“Put some junk out there—old suitcases, blankets, buckets—whatever you’ve got. Of course, at first, the kids might be bored. Scratch that: They will be bored. They’ll want to come back in and grab the iPad.”
At this point, parents would need to stay strong and resist the temptation to let them in or entertain them. “Give them a stretch of time—and especially if you can send some other kids out there with them—and out of ‘There’s nothing to do,’ something will catch their interest. And a curious kid is born,” said Lenore.

Charles Lightoller the second officer on the Titanic stayed onboard untill the end. And got trapped underwater until a boiler explosion blew him free. He survived by clinging to a capsized collapsible B. Later he volunteered in WWII and helped evacuate over 120 men from Dunkirk.

It was never launched because when they tried to untie it, it fell to the lower deck and was washed away upside down and folded. I agree and I think he is not given as much credit as he deserves.
Load More Replies...The impact of that number is small if you don't consider stock history: Long story short $10 million offer was worth $6756 million (or $6.7 billion) in late 2019 ( https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/11/24/if-you-invested-100-in-apples-ipo-this-is-how-much.aspx ) and currently around/just over twice that.
Back in 1976 you could get a job as valet at Apple. Not what you think. In 1976 the parking lot was small and the biz was growing so they had to double and triple park cars. Anyway, valets sometimes got paid in shares, pre-IPO. Some of them retired at a very young age.

It was due to David Lee Roth being there all day doing press so he was drinking and by the time VH hit the stage to headline it was late and they had way too many, a bad combo.)
Steve Jobs used some of his money and power to help fund a little animation studio named Pixar.
My husband was an HVAC contractor and did a re-do of Wozniak’s home up in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He said Wozniak was a genuinely compassionate, intelligent and all-around ‘nice guy’.

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle the bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear poop. Black bear poop is smaller and contains a lot of berry seeds and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear poop has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray."

Wood ants practice chemistry, and will synthesize an antibiotic substance using tree resin and formic acid to protect the health of their colony. It is considered to be the most advanced act of evolutionary pharmacology seen in the animal kingdom
It sounds a bit like they treat tree resin _specifically_ with formic acid (their self-produced poison), in the way that some ants will specifically and deliberately farm aphids or fungi. I'd like to point out that in this case, they will treat all kinds of materials in their nests with formic acid, which has some antimicrobial effects on its own. And there are several kinds of insects that will transport tree resin into their nests, which also is antimicrobial by itself. It just so happens that in this case, the combination of the habit to collect tree resin and the habit to spray nest materials with formic acids results in a much more potent antimicrobial substance. Btw, the source article is here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5383563/
Wow those ants are smarter than i thought. Does that mean they're alchemists now??
Til The People Of Africa Have More Genetic Diversity Than The Rest Of The World Combined
The study showed that while we may look radically different we are closely related in DNA. We are one.
Everyone’s ancient ancestors are black. Every one of us. Lighter skin pigmentation is an adaptation to absorb more sunlight (vitamin D) in the colder climes after humans moved into the northern hemisphere out of Africa. There is no such thing as race, neither scientifically nor anthropologically. The real Adam and Eve were black.
I knew that, and since humans originated from Africa, it is only to be expected. Only a portion of the human ancestors migrated to other parts of the world, so the genetic diversity of those outside of Africa is necessarily restricted to that original subset of the human gene pool.
I Will love to know the source of this! It should be an interesting read. Somebody knows?
Of course - we originated in Africa, and everywhere else people are sub samples of the original population. We have a small bit of extra diversity from Denisovans and Neanderthals, but that does not make up for the fact that the rest of us are merely a subsample of the genetic diversity of one or two regions of Africa.
Vaguely like that I suppose. In your analogy non-Africans would be the mammals, reptiles and amphibians (relatively closely related) and Africans would be the fish (labelled together for convenience, but genetically divergent). But I'm not sure people will appreciate being compared to fish!

Sudan has more pyramids than any other country on earth – even more than Egypt. There are at least 223 pyramids in the Sudanese cities of Al Kurru, Nuri, Gebel Barkal and Meroë. They are generally 20 to 30 metres high and steep sided.
The Nubian Pyramids of Kush were inspired by Egypt's pyramids, most notably by the family tombs of the New Kingdom. They have narrower bases than Egyptian ones.Sadly, a number were destroyed in the 19th century, sme have been rebuilt. They are still discovering more of these pyramids today.
For my fellow Americans: 20 meters = roughly 65 feet and 30 meters = roughly 98 feet. Now you don't have to Google it! :D
The tops were blown off with explosives by Italian "archeologists" who believed treasure was buried there. A number of them have been brought back to their original state but sadly this has been done to a somewhat substandard quality.
China has possibly some of the oldest. Believed to be more than 8000 years old. And many of them house red-haired corpses.
Well it is geographically next door to Egypt !! ! So one would think those who built the pyramids would have traveled elsewhere to build other ones ! And a country right next door back in the olden times would have just been the same whole plot of land ! So technically the pyramids where just built on the same land mass until borders and countries where established!

Not surprising, many viruses known today insert themselves into your DNA. For example varicella virus. When you catch it, it causes chicken pox and then hides in your genome. If it gets reactivated, you develop shingles.
And that 8% makes up the mouth breathers who stormed the Capitol.
Load More Replies...This is a little more amazing when you take into consideration that in order for the viral DNA to be passed on, the virus had to infect either a sperm or egg (which tend not to be infected by viruses in general) , that sperm/egg had to then be fertilized and successfully develop into an adult human.
Well, we wouldn’t be here to talk about it if they hadn’t survived.

It's geometry. The moon is illuminated by sunlight. In order to see the full moon, we must be right between the two (seeing the fully illuminated moon with the sun directly opposite in the sky). If the moon rises at noon, the moon, earth, and sun form a 90-degree triangle, and we see the moon half-illuminated. Last quarter moon is the same as first-quarter, but the sun is on the opposite side of the triangle (at midnight).
