Slaveholders in the US knew that enslaved people were escaping to Mexico, the U.S. tried to get Mexico to sign a fugitive slave treaty, but Mexico refused to sign such a treaty, insisting that all enslaved people were free once they set foot on Mexican soil.

Well, Mexico's view on slavery was a huge part in Texas' decision to declare independence from Mexico. They were all like "we can't enslave people? Then we'll start our own country, with slaves, and booze!" They later joined USA, since USA were more accomodating with slavery

The main reasons Texas seceded from Mexico and became a Republic were that Mexico outlawed slavery and demanded conversion to Catholicism.

A hunger for knowledge is something we have to nurture throughout our lives. After all, keeping our brains busy with learning new things, like a language, is known to be a powerful antidote against diseases in old age, like dementia and Alzheimer’s.

But our desire to learn starts from an early age as we don’t turn into life-long learners overnight. Previously, Bored Panda talked to Lenore Skenazy, the president of Let Grow, the nonprofit promoting childhood independence about nurturing our kids’ desire to learn beyond compulsory education.

Underlying is also the fact that the Constitution is a quite short document --- which almost zero of its "defenders" in the Capitol insurrection has actually read. Like bible verses, they know some numbers but haven't read the whole and haven't grasped its overall intent/content. "The second amendment!"... but to what, to the document or a specific law?; they will guess.

Thurgood Marshall was arguably, and in my opinion, the most influential black person in our history. I would argue that he was more instrumental in achieving civil rights goals than King was. Marshall worked for decades, not years, decades to overturn the 1896 Plessy vs. Ferguson ruling (separate but equal is constitutional...but blacks never had equal access to society). He actually argued in the Supreme Court, the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling. He was the head of the NAACP legal team and they chipped away at Plessy bit by bit until they could take it down entirely. A genuinely impressive strategy. Planned, thorough, cunning, patient..and relentless. That he was a justice was a really, really important part of his life, it was only one part of it. One of the giants of U.S. history.

First, Lenore recommends parents “designate an hour or two each day as ‘outdoor’ time without any electronic devices.” It turns out that this is a crucial step into bringing out the ‘curious child.’

“Put some junk out there—old suitcases, blankets, buckets—whatever you’ve got. Of course, at first, the kids might be bored. Scratch that: They will be bored. They’ll want to come back in and grab the iPad.”

At this point, parents would need to stay strong and resist the temptation to let them in or entertain them. “Give them a stretch of time—and especially if you can send some other kids out there with them—and out of ‘There’s nothing to do,’ something will catch their interest. And a curious kid is born,” said Lenore.

The Titanic had four collapsible life boats. “B” was the identifier of one them. It was never launched because when they tried to untie it, it fell to the lower deck and was washed away upside down and folded. However several people (mostly crew) survived by locating it standing on it. About 25 passengers were rescued from it.

Not exactly crash landed, it was an emergency landing at Mallow racecourse (horse racing) due to weather and low fuel. "On 18 April 1983, Captain Ruben Ocana flying a Gulfstream II made an unexpected landing at Mallow Racecourse. The Mexican pilot and his crew remained stranded in Mallow for 39 days until a runway was laid to get the 15-seat jet airborne again. Captain Ocana made the emergency landing at Mallow Racecourse after running low on fuel on route to Cork Airport when Shannon Airport was fogged out. As native americans and africans did to other cultures. Every civilization has been based on violence. Do you think that the Mayan civilization took the land of their neightbours gently? What about the bantu groups masacrating the san communities in Africa? Or about the north african bereber and arabian groups conquering Spain?. Humans are all cruel not only caucasians.

For me, doctors and nurses are magicians, heroes. I got ventricular septal defect (a congenital heart defect) when I was born. I got saved by a team of doctors and nurses when I was only 6 months old. Now, at 28, living a normal and perfectly healthy life, I always pay highest respect for medical workers.

"Montana Grizzly Bear Notice: In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field. We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle the bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear poop. Black bear poop is smaller and contains a lot of berry seeds and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear poop has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray."

I think it was one eyebrow. Still major pet mourning, though. I just cry a lot. A lot. I’ve also had to leave college classes or take a day off work because I was so torn up with grief. Before you think that’s OTT for animals, I’m exactly the same when a human family member passes. The more I love the more I grieve, no matter what species the beloved belongs to.

Like an "opsitkers" (wait up candle), which fathers used to light when a suitor came calling for his daughter. When the candle burned out, the caller had to go home. Obviously, some suitors were favoured by fathers and the candles would subsequently be longer so that visiting time would be increased.

The plane in question was a Gulfstream II (not the DC-10 pictured above), en-route to Shannon, but had to divert to Cork due to visibility at Shannon being below minimums. He ran out of fuel on the way there and landed at Mallow Racecourse.

It waa a 727; one man was a pilot/flight engineer; nobody knows why they did it; odds are in favor of a fatal crash. Given we can't even find MH370, not thinking we'll find this one....

Hi devi L. Sorry to disagree with you, but the writers who write the songs are actually acknowledged by being credited as such; look at any track listing of a song and the writer(s) name will be there, legally it has to. But I agree with you that this can be unknown to listeners and therefore they’re not necessarily aware of the original creators. I love music and make a point of establishing the original persons that created classic songs. Yours s.

No, not true. If a horse is trained properly, they won't spook. Even bigger horses can be trained like this. At my stables there are a few therapeutic horses- even a huge Fresian- and they are extremely well behaved. Besides, any animal can spook, even dogs. It also goes without saying that horses are incredibly smart.

I quit smoking three years ago after a decade of at least a pack a day. One of the hardest things I've done but completely worth it. I'm just all around healthier and I hope this information holds true!

When my little brother was born, I encouraged my father to quit smoking, saying "It's not only for your health, father, but for the little boy as well". And I keep supporting him, searching for methods to help him quit smoking (like chewing gum, candy). He did it, he quit smoking completely. There were many people before who advised him to quit smoking but he could never succeed. Smokers really need support from friends and family to quit smoking. Stay with them!

My father was born in 1929 and quit smoking at the age of 40. At a medical appointment when he was in his 80s he was asked if he had ever smoked. When he told them he gave up in 1969 he was told that was as good as never having smoked at all, which pleased him immensely.

Wood ants practice chemistry, and will synthesize an antibiotic substance using tree resin and formic acid to protect the health of their colony. It is considered to be the most advanced act of evolutionary pharmacology seen in the animal kingdom

It sounds a bit like they treat tree resin _specifically_ with formic acid (their self-produced poison), in the way that some ants will specifically and deliberately farm aphids or fungi. I'd like to point out that in this case, they will treat all kinds of materials in their nests with formic acid, which has some antimicrobial effects on its own. And there are several kinds of insects that will transport tree resin into their nests, which also is antimicrobial by itself. It just so happens that in this case, the combination of the habit to collect tree resin and the habit to spray nest materials with formic acids results in a much more potent antimicrobial substance. Btw, the source article is here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5383563/

Everyone’s ancient ancestors are black. Every one of us. Lighter skin pigmentation is an adaptation to absorb more sunlight (vitamin D) in the colder climes after humans moved into the northern hemisphere out of Africa. There is no such thing as race, neither scientifically nor anthropologically. The real Adam and Eve were black.

I knew that, and since humans originated from Africa, it is only to be expected. Only a portion of the human ancestors migrated to other parts of the world, so the genetic diversity of those outside of Africa is necessarily restricted to that original subset of the human gene pool.

Of course - we originated in Africa, and everywhere else people are sub samples of the original population. We have a small bit of extra diversity from Denisovans and Neanderthals, but that does not make up for the fact that the rest of us are merely a subsample of the genetic diversity of one or two regions of Africa.

That's like the fish thing - that no two species of fish will necessarily be any more closely related to each other than they are to us, other mammals, reptiles or amphibians.

Vaguely like that I suppose. In your analogy non-Africans would be the mammals, reptiles and amphibians (relatively closely related) and Africans would be the fish (labelled together for convenience, but genetically divergent). But I'm not sure people will appreciate being compared to fish!

My money would be on occasional Roman and Phoenician ships accidentally reaching Brazil from the coast of Africa, as the currents sometimes push unfortunate ships that far today. There's also textual evidence that suggests the Inuit occasionally made it all the way to Scotland in the late medieval period. I find the other claims made on behalf of this or that traveller somewhat dubious, but I'm always eager for evidence.

Well it is geographically next door to Egypt !! ! So one would think those who built the pyramids would have traveled elsewhere to build other ones ! And a country right next door back in the olden times would have just been the same whole plot of land ! So technically the pyramids where just built on the same land mass until borders and countries where established!

Not surprising, many viruses known today insert themselves into your DNA. For example varicella virus. When you catch it, it causes chicken pox and then hides in your genome. If it gets reactivated, you develop shingles.

This is a little more amazing when you take into consideration that in order for the viral DNA to be passed on, the virus had to infect either a sperm or egg (which tend not to be infected by viruses in general) , that sperm/egg had to then be fertilized and successfully develop into an adult human.

And, in turn, it causes bounce-back headaches. Excederin is NOTORIOUS for this. You have a headache, take two, then four hours later, the headache is back, but worse. So you start taking more to avoid this. People get seriously addicted to Excederin. (I mean, people get addicted to coffee and pop too, but this post is about how it amplifies aspirin, etc...)

Whereas I'm a Jew of Polish descent whos family were murdered in Auschwitz, although my grandmother survived a concentration camp. The Danish people also snuck out almost their entire population of Jews, in one night - taking them to neutral Sweden. Almost 8,000, and, of the 500 that the Nazis arrested, the Danish government was able to save 450. They are the only European county under Nazi occupation which didn't have the majority of their Jewish population in the Nazi-occupied area murdered by the Nazis.

It is unnecessary to paint with such a broad brush. Almost all police are normal people trying to do their jobs and protect others. It makes me sad that so many decent people are demonized for just tying to keep people safe. Please do not punish all for the actions of very few.

I am not Jenny. One of them got mad and said to stop playing around when I insisted I was not Jenny. Think of that - normally as soon as the person speaks, you realize you'd made a mistake, but he REALLY thought I was Jenny. We must have been like identical twins. The answer is genetics. Just like someone who's family comes from a rural area that mostly ate healthy foods like vegetables and rice is more likely to have diabetes if they eat a lot of unhealthy food and don't exercise than someone who's family has eaten unhealthily for a few generations.

Definitely debunked. The statistics included people with alcohol intolerance, who don,t live as long as the rest of the population because they lack an enzyme which not only breaks down alcohol but has other important functions. This was interpreted as ''drinking makes you live longer'', when in fact reading statistics correctly seems to be a rare trait.

When Disney does a take on a story, the Disney version becomes the story in most people's mind. They plundered and sanitised Danish and German folk tales such that few people know the original works. I can quite see why Tolkien would not want this to happen to his works.

It sure is! And unlike some tourist traps only aiming on earning money out of naive tourists (Blarney castle for instance - a total was of time and money, the local pub nearby is much more recommendable), Newgrange is actually a site with historical relevance.

However, it's extremely rare for people to get bitten as these snakes are very shy and placid. And the few people who have been bitten have lived after they received medical care. So it's really not that scary.

A lot of us in EMS & the fire department in NYC still call hoarders “Collyers.” The body parts in their house were medical specimens; their father was a doctor. The site of their home (it had to be torn down due to the condition they put it in) is now a park.

Something I found out recently. Gladiators rarely died in the arena. Super rarely. They slaughtered prisoners and beasts by the hundreds alright, but if one were to be cynical, probably came to pre-match agreements about their duels to put on the best spectacle.

Gladiators were expensive: to buy, to train, to keep in shape. They preferred to slaughter cheap slaves in the arena and keep the expensive and famous ones alive.

It's geometry. The moon is illuminated by sunlight. In order to see the full moon, we must be right between the two (seeing the fully illuminated moon with the sun directly opposite in the sky). If the moon rises at noon, the moon, earth, and sun form a 90-degree triangle, and we see the moon half-illuminated. Last quarter moon is the same as first-quarter, but the sun is on the opposite side of the triangle (at midnight).

Visiting USA from Australia, we drove past a school bus as we did not know this law. We did not get fined/arrested and, thankfully, we passed without incident, learning from the horn honking that we had done the wrong thing.

We don't have school busses like this in Germany. Busses are only aloud to load/unload people (and schoolkids) at bus stops. However if the bus has its warning lights turned on it is forbidden to pass it. So basically the TIL is not right.

I don't understand it. Is the byline known? Is "Shamrock" important? I think I lack too much context to understand.

Shamrock is a clover variety which often produces the "lucky" 4 leaf clover (they're normally 3 leafed). But the term "sham" also indicates a fraud - the supposed luck was rigged.

The guillotine remained France’s state method of capital punishment well into the late 20th century. Convicted murderer Hamida Djandoubi became the last person to meet his end by the “National Razor” after he was executed by the guillotine in 1977. Still, the machine’s 189-year reign only officially came to an end in September 1981, when France abolished capital punishment for good.

You don't seem very well Bill. Maybe keep the false claims of pedophilia and demands for murder to yourself, OK?

That's just stupid. How can you sell something you don't own? This is one of the reasons why stock markets crash and countries (and subsequently the world) go into recession. 1929, 2008

He had sex with the underage Black maid for his family (when he was 22, she was 14), the f*cking pedophile. He believed that it was worth standing for 24 hours if it preserved the right of Wealthy White men to have sex with underage Black girls without facing repercussions.
