This 1956 Kitchen Hasn’t Been Touched For 50 Years
In a strange and unexpected discovery, furniture designer and creator Nathan Chandler found and bought a home that had remained sealed since 1956, keeping its 60s style interior perfectly intact. Though the house has recently been sold, the interior design of this vintage kitchen provided us with a look at a time long gone.
It’s not clear why the original owners of the home kept the kitchen design unchanged for so long, but we’re glad they did because the interior décor elements and the vintage furniture are absolutely perfect. From the pastel pink counters to the manuals still attached to the unused GE home appliances, every kitchen decor detail here is straight out of a 1950s American family sitcom.
The fate of this period room design is uncertain, but we’re glad to have had a look into such a strangely-preserved historic space!

The first thing you’ll notice is that this kitchen has pink everywhere
These are the buttons to an electric stovetop – note the old-school cover
This fridge is mounted at eye-level, like a cabinet
Even the oven is pink!
The appliances all still come with their 1950s manuals
The fridge is a bit small, but at least it’s… pink
The dishwasher pulls all the way out
Here’s what dish detergent looked like in the 50s

Share on FacebookI am dying to know why no one ever lived in this house at all in 60 years! I hope they say why one day.
It's probably an old Hollywood in a back lot. Much crucial info missing; mainly the 'where', why and 'how' this time time capsule emanated.
Load More Replies...That is all kinds of awesome. It does look like someone put in a modern dishwasher. BUT way cool. Hope it is preserved.
This was reported in 2012 as being a kitchen from 1962, sold on by Mr Chandler - http://www.messynessychic.com/2012/08/29/american-retro-tim
How come there's no dust or cobwebs? I mean, it hasn't been touched for 50 years, it can't be THAT clean...
My bathroom was completely redone by previous owner in the mid-sixties. all pink. I am so sick of it.
There is something wrong with this article. Notice the 4th pictures the wood is chipped. The stove top if you look closer, looks like it had been used. You can see the streaks from grease.

that is amazing! I sure hope the new owners do not rip it all out, and if they do they should donate to a museum or the whole kitchen to a party interested in retro/kitchen. Would be great to know the reason why the house had been untouched and sealed for so many years. Thanks for sharing!
Other rooms? Mid-century modern furniture in champagne blonde finish like Heywood Wakefield? Could be 50s museum! WOW!
I think it may be a trash compacter from back in the day, that you are mistaking for a modern dishwasher, big, but compressed a wks trash
Thank you so much for a look backwards in time! I'm ready to move in, lol such a nice and rare opportunity! Such history, love it!
Why hasn't anyone lived there in the last 50 years, is there some thing wrong with the place? Is it for sale now, for how much?
Actually the dishwasher showed has tile to the right which is also different, in original picture it is a modern one in a different area..
So sad that the guy that bought it is selling off all those vintage appliances that have never been used..
Would be a pity to change. What a good Conversation piece. The person who designed this in 1956 Was was before us time. Looks quite modern
I pulled a similar Blue kitchen out in 1994 - it killed me 'cause I recognized the Brilliance of the cutting edge design & ergonomic feature
Can't stand the pink. That entire home will have to be rewired to support today's needs. The gaskets in the washer are shot. etc
Ah quality, also did you see the manuals! very nice, not the c**p black and white stuff we get today.
My grandmother's home from my 50s childhood which never changed until she passed away in 1976. I always loved it.
I can't even go 3 minutes without touching something, 50 years is forever for me.
I think they should leave it as is, i would love to have a kitchen like this, maybe modernize some of the appliances . let history live!
I wish we could see the test of the house! Oh great Scott, anyone have a clue?
Smells like bullsh*t to me. What I can tell you for certain is that this photo collection was posted online 5 years ago.
The floors also don't look original. Dishwasher racks look like there is rust in the water. The Thanks box looks like it got wet.
These are grease drops under the edges of the grease pans, and burnt on grease in the center of the burner. The top dishwasher also scratche
Someone has been there. There's a chip in the drawer just below the stove top buttons. The stove top has definitely been cleaned.
There was another article stating the owners were selling the appliance to make way for a remodel, maybe that explains the new dishwasher!
There was another article about the owners selling off the appliances and doing a makeover... Maybe that would explain the new dishwasher!
I read about a California mansion vacant for 50 yrs owned by a New York lady who'd never lived there but still she kept up its maintenance!
The people who originally owned this house were well to do from my experience with kitchens in my youth.
I want to live in that house..and I would love to see the rest of the house!
So...this is basically a pink version of my kitchen. Mine is robins egg blue, and matched the outside of my house!
Very cool! But that sure looks like a stainless integrated dishwasher, like a Kitchenaid or Samsung. Please explain.
I love Retro, so it's awesome!! I love the cupboards and the gingerbread design, one thing though, windows look acrylic with wood framing.
This is no reall, you can see, that this kitchen was made with 3d program. But very good job though :)
Go to the flickr page - Nathan Chandler is selling the appliances. Apparently he was renovating the house. Hence the new dishwasher.
I have a kitchen from 1940, so nice and beautiful! We only put some paint on it and a new stone plate for the work.
The "original" manual looks a bit too modern for a 1950s colour print job.
I'd leave it for a while! It's really fun and a great show piece!
it looks like it was designed for a barbie dream house of the era.
