This 1956 Kitchen Hasn’t Been Touched For 50 Years
454Kviews
In a strange and unexpected discovery, furniture designer and creator Nathan Chandler found and bought a home that had remained sealed since 1956, keeping its 60s style interior perfectly intact. Though the house has recently been sold, the interior design of this vintage kitchen provided us with a look at a time long gone.
It’s not clear why the original owners of the home kept the kitchen design unchanged for so long, but we’re glad they did because the interior décor elements and the vintage furniture are absolutely perfect. From the pastel pink counters to the manuals still attached to the unused GE home appliances, every kitchen decor detail here is straight out of a 1950s American family sitcom.
The fate of this period room design is uncertain, but we’re glad to have had a look into such a strangely-preserved historic space!

The first thing you’ll notice is that this kitchen has pink everywhere
These are the buttons to an electric stovetop – note the old-school cover
This fridge is mounted at eye-level, like a cabinet
Even the oven is pink!
The appliances all still come with their 1950s manuals
The fridge is a bit small, but at least it’s… pink
The dishwasher pulls all the way out
Here’s what dish detergent looked like in the 50s

In the very first pic there appears to be totally modern dishwasher.
I saw that too! Weird.
I believe that is a trash compactor
Great catch! "Sealed in pristine condition" is almost true. The burners also have use scratches. Still, a great blast from the design past.
"sealed for so long, but we’re glad they did, because the interior décor elements are absolutely perfect. " not quite verbatum...
where did you see "Sealed in pristine condition"?
Yes, you can see the vintage washer has been pulled out onto cardboard. It probably was there but they replaced it with a modern one.
Bought it in 2009, lived in it until 2015. I imagine he replaced things that weren't working. It probably looked horrible when he moved in.
That would explain the never heard of dishwasher. The dishwasher then were called Bobby and Susie.
He's selling off the appliances and has replaced the old dishwasher w/ a stainless steel one. Very sad :(

That's the oven. It's right under the stove :)
Sorry, but in the first picture, there is a modern metalic finish dishwasher, to the left of the sink.
Nope, that's the dishwasher. I own that same model dishwasher. I think this article is lacking some truth....
That;s not the oven. The oven is pink.
Nope, the oven is pink
No because it shows another pic of the oven and it's pink not stainless.
And what about that pink thing, they call: "oven"
No; the oven is pink and just to the right of the refrigerator/freezer.
I am dying to know why no one ever lived in this house at all in 60 years! I hope they say why one day.
It's probably an old Hollywood in a back lot. Much crucial info missing; mainly the 'where', why and 'how' this time time capsule emanated.
I am with KirkPoole. I don't believe the story. The pictures are nice but something is fishy about the story of a "sealed" kitchen. Nothing would be perfect if it were sealed up anyway. Machines fall apart if they are not used.
I saw this house in a different article once, they said it was used as a model house for a new subdivision back then.
That's really cool!
