Admittedly I am not the only cricket artist about. There are a few others but none like me. I combine my love of cricket with my love of expressing movement. Other cricket artists paint cricket grounds or portraits of their favourite cricketers but not me. I want to take away all the time, I draw then I take away because it’s what you can’t see that creates the feeling of motion.
There is something about cricket that lends itself to art, its formal, its recognisable, its unique. It doesn’t matter if the person is famous or not, if you get the motion right a hundred cricketers will mimic that motion with an invisible bat or ball.
I use charcoal and a splash of colour, usually the ball but not always…..
I would love my cricket art to get out there, to be on the walls of lots of cricket clubs and cricket loving houses but its hard. In the art world, critics and exhibitions are not interested in cricket art, it isn’t popular, it isn’t cutting edge and they fail to see the passion that I can see so clearly in my drawings. In the cricket world I have made small ripples, cricket lovers find my work and are amazed that I’m not more well known – but how? I’ve tried tweeting my stuff to cricket celebrities and pundits but they are busy people and its tricky to get through.
I will branch out into drawing other sports – rugby, football eventually in the same style – my style will eventually start to filter through and maybe one day sports art will bridge the gap between the art world and everyone else…….
